    1. Set a certain time for deep work every day
    - The best way to make work less exhausting is to make it a habit. Set an extended time to do your work and get rid of any distractions.
    - Cal Newport, the author of Deep Work, suggests doing deep work first in the morning, from 9 a.m. to midday. That’s when your mind functions the best.
    - When you first start, don’t worry if you can only do about 20 - 30 minutes. With enough practice, you will be able to extend it to a few hours, but not more than 4. Research shows that a human’s brain can’t focus for more than 4 hours at a time.
    2. Have a shutdown ritual
    - Ways to unplug:
    - Take a nap
    - Meditate
    - Take a walk in nature
    - Don't scroll through social media during the break. This is like you would slow down and take a rest instead of doing burpees during a marathon race to run farther.
    3. Have a rule of being distracted
    - Set a certain for distracting activities like checking emails, scrolling social media, etc. It’s better to do these activities after deep work.
    4. Take care of your body
    - Sleep for at least 7 hours a day. Those who don’t have enough sleep have a worse performance during the day.
    - Exercise. Our brains become more plastic and perform better when we exercise. Also, your short-term memory functions at its peak up to 3 - 4 hours after exercising.
    - Stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle by your side while engaging in deep work.
    - Eat healthily.
    5. The Pomodoro Technique
    - Work for 25 minutes without interruption.
    - Take a rest for 5 minutes.
    - Repeat the cycle 4 times then take a long break

      haven't met a "multitasker" that actually gets anything done properly.

    • @angie-tq4ew
      @angie-tq4ew 4 года назад +13

      I agree wholeheartedly. Over the years, I've mastered the skill of multi-tasking, because that's what employers seem to want in an employee, but I've noticed that the real jobs get done when you can focus on one task, without distraction, until completion. I'm now learning to do that better. I'm finally trying to write (something I've always wanted to do), and I'm finding that I need this skill more than ever.

    • @Choo-choo-chookcha
      @Choo-choo-chookcha 4 года назад +5

      What people perceive as multi-tasking is actually focused work on one thing followed by focused work on other thing and so on, while that first thing is not getting out of hand. True multi-tasking doesn't exist. Trying to do a bunch of things at once is not multi-tasking, it's overcinfidence at best and stupidity at worst.

    Honestly, I think that focus is largely a result the way that you feel about yourself and the way that you feel emotionally about the possibilities for yourself, which is often the byproduct of childhood relationships, as well inspiration. I think that focus starts with dealing with those things.

    The pomodoro technique really works for me. Each half hour I walk for five minutes, in my house, going back and forth in a long room at the end of the house. I’m studying math and physics and when I start walking, I'm still engrossed with what I’m studying and often have insights during this walk time that don’t happen while I’m sitting at my desk. I met Haruki Murakami before I knew who he was ugh I wasn’t familiar with him at the time but love his books now. I have all of them.

    Great video, reminder of techniques I’ve used in the past. Lately though having trouble focusing as I’m in middle of lifestyle changes. It would be great if you and/or other viewers could address two things I need help on: 1) How to do deep work on multiple different things? A day for each area of deep focused work or divide up the focus time? 2) I need to do outdoor work in the mornings before it gets too hot, this has messed up my focused computer morning work time. If I do outdoor work, say from 6/7 to 9 am, then switch to deep focus, will I still be able to maintain productivity? Yes I realize I have to do it to see what works, but would like some input on these kinds of issues, thanks!
