This video has a few misinterpretations I'll fix in episode 02, kindly reviewed by Jason Lim from Instruo. @07:12 "White Shift Enables PWM cross modulation." This might be an error in interpretation: The index amplitude control does influence PWM depth of the INDEX controlled sine wave amplitudes, but it is not accessed via the INDEX button in any way. It is top level via the MOD button. (page 22 in the manual) @09:55 Pulse out: The last production run which occurred in the past two years of various modules had jack backlighting removed from assembly. The specific reverse gullwing mount LEDs were out of production and one part completely discontinued unfortunately. Victims of the still ongoing semiconductor shortage. @11:48 Pitch Cross Modulation "...Two VCA's that can have their pitch disturbed either by eachother, or by external CV. The FM bus controls how much." This is not strictly true. The INDEX bus affects the amplitudes of internal branches of each oscillators' sine wave signal. It's attenuation occurs before routed normalisation to the opposite oscillator's FM input jacks. The INDEX bus control will not affect amplitudes of incoming external modulation signals.
Have had this oscillator for years, preordered from Jason himself! Admittedly today was the day I finally wrapped my head around the modulation matrix, past the simple FM knobs. I had read the manuals, quick starts, even watched his video where he explains it in depth several times, but the eureka moment was your illustrations- and now its simple to me. His illustrations make sense now that I understood it through yours, to be fair, haha. THANK YOU for your excellent work!!
Nice video. I love my Cs-l, it’s sounds so good but sometimes it’s really to complex for me. I hope I can understand it better after your video series. Thank you for your magnificent job.
It's not as difficult as it looks, it's just that it can make millions of sounds. You could check out my Shared System tutorial series dedicated to the DPO. And this series will have more episodes.
I saw all your videos ( you are my favorite channel). Sometimes I don’t feel that I really control the sound which comes out of Cs-l then I’ll be a little bit frustrated.
@@spadinvader It comes with the principals of a complex VCO. I learned them by starting with the two sine outputs and just listening how they respond to lin/expo FM through the bus. At some point (after many hours) you'll be able to predict what will happen. Then you'll have a strong foundation to explore further by adding lfo's and envelopes to the fm and pitch inputs. I'll start episode 02 next week and the point will be to keep things super simple.
The most beautifully designed euro rack stuff out there to me. I definitely don’t want to ruin their sales but all these modules are on VCV rack. Great Job on the video as always
Achooley I think being on VCV rack helps their sales. Like a first free hit gateway drug that gets you hooked to move onto the hardware eventually. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. For awhile. Agree about the beauty of the modules. The black and gold reminds me of the Lotus F1 cars of the late 70s.
You have my attention (I mean, you always have my attention, but still). I've been building out an "Instruo-forward" case. At this point I'm just missing a few things (Lion, Larachd, Scion, need to re-acquire Arbhar). Been enjoying it for sure. But long before I started building it out, I had Cs-L. If I were forced to just live with a single module and a pair of headphones for awhile, it'd be Cs-L. I've had it for several years and I still find new sounds constantly. It's the first module I turn to when I want to introduce my non-synth friends to the joys of Eurorack. I encourage them to just turn the knobs and listen, and it's fun to watch their faces as that thing rips, snarls, and sings. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
You make really really great videos, this one however is even better than usual I think. Particularly appreciate and admire all the effort you put into the graphics and text. I use Harmonaigh with Bloom and Steppy as my sequencer. Love how easy and simple Harmonaigh is to use and suche has been drooling a bit over these oscillators, but now think "no thanks" as this seems to complex for me. Regarding attenuation, I use the WMD Atten outside my case as it uses no power. Thought about making a small case with unpowered modules, like lpg, mults etc.. Anyway, thanks.
Thanks for Sharing, Jonas! I had to 'grow' to these graphics and find a way to make them without taking many hours. So you will see them more in the 'big' items. I started it with the XPO video and it's a lot of fun. As for the Cs-L, it's not as complex as it looks. The idea of this series is to remove all the complexity so stay tuned!
@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks for your reply Cine Lab. I play all your videos so yes I'm inn. Your format is great as I neither have to listen to loads of talk or read essays, but at the same time not only music without any explanations, so a perfect middleway I would say. Your videos are very replayable to as they work as artistic works to, so nice to sometimes just mindlessly watch and listen , be inspired and make me move my ass over to my own rack.
@@jonaseggen2230 Wow, that's so good to hear and exactly why I want to stick to this format without any add interruptions. I tried it for a month and it breaks the experience.
My two cents on Cs-L's complexity: Even when used "simply," it's fantastic. If you commit to the idea that it'll grow as your own skills and knowledge grows, you'll be rewarded.
My Arbar doesn't always start up completely. Lights on, but no sound goes in or out. I have bought a soft start module, maybe it's a power thing. Also undo is weird, when you have a 'auto loaded sound' (first after startup), the first undo of a recording goes to 'empty', instead of reverting to the auto loaded sound. It seems you can only undo to a recording. Another weird thing is I can sometimes have two buffers active at the same time! The intensity plays an 'old' buffer and strike the just recorded one. Not sure which version I have, but I have a 'non blinking pulse out', and it doesn't record when sense is all the way down (which is good).
@@CinematicLaboratory Got a reaction from Jason. Not starting fully up (no sound out): under service / warranty. Undo/loading 'weirdness': know issue, will be addressed in a future update. Two buffers at the same time: layer selection knob might be just in at a point where the both granular engines (strike/intensity) read a different layer selected.
@@CinematicLaboratory There was nothing ‘wrong’ with it in the sense that it was faulty. However, it was not the all-singing all-dancing granular reverb playground that I was led to believe (I had watched several YT videos before buying), and for a piece costing not far short of £600 it was not acceptable that grain length was wholly dependent on grain frequency (cf for example MI Clouds, where grain size and frequency are completely independent). I gave it my best, but after two weeks contacted the retailer, who agreed a return under DSR. Your noting that there are ‘old’ and ‘new’ Arbhars is interesting. Are grain size and frequency independent on the newer versions I wonder… Anyway, I shall be conducting detailed research on the CS-L before spending £500+ on it- even though it does sound lush here.
@@walrtbstudios5430 I try to think about two things about the Arbhar: 1. it's not a looper (Instruo), 2. it's granular 'spray paint' (CinematicLaboratory). Out of curiosity, which granular module is the 'all-singing all-dancing' playground for you?
@@CinematicLaboratory I love mine too.Anyway this video has inspired me to make an Instruo case. Just need one of the uclouds. Thanks for the great vid as aways Robert.
Nice, looking forward to it. By the way, I think you corrected it in the comments, but the internal index routing to the wavefold CVs comes from the sine waves of A and B oscillators, not the PWM outputs… but that’s just getting nitpicky lol.
Maybe you said that… I probably didn’t quite understand. I still don’t fully understand everything 100% yet, but it’s fun playing around and figuring it out
