As a twelve year old at the time cannot forget this song. The days when pop music included "classics" such as the Smurfs, Barron Knights and Plastic Bertrand. Great memories.
As a 13 year in 1978, I loved this (although I had no idea it was a send up) in the late 1980s I came across "John Shuttleworth" who was Graham Fellows aka Jilted John ... !
The weird thing is that my first thoughts were that the PC brigade would be all over the lyrics of this these days. Then I noticed Jimmy Saville was presenting it!
He did the right thing! You have to nip that kind of abuse in the bud, if not, you’re just asking for trouble, if the word gets out you take it up the arse they’ll be knocking on your door with a jar a Vaseline and some flowers
"Gordon is a moron" LOL ! Most of the lads I knew would have called him something a lot stronger. Takes me back to high school... Everyone knew the words to this. Thanks for the memories !
best thing about his performance are that they were live, band and all. unusual in those days. as has been mentioned before it's uncanny that damon albarn sung with a similar style at times!
Richxbox, totally agree.Jimmy was an icon of TOTP and way beyond. There arent many originals left.Jilted John captures the heady carefreeness of those days
when this came out our neighbour accross the road was called Gordon .........i expect he was highly delighted when this was released.thanks for posting
I had the Jilted John album. Contained a heartwarming commentary about his shit life. The standout track was "Fancy Mice" in my view. As for this classic clip, check out Lurch doing the hand jive. It gets no better. What a pleasure it is to be an Englishman with memories.
My friend's mum, who's name is Julie, was telling me about how once when she was going out with some guy, whom she dumped to go out with a guy called Gordon and the next day he posted a tape of this song through her letter box. She thought it was quite offensive but I thought it was hillarious
Notice the fretting technique of the guitar player at about 0:09. He is using only one finger to fret the guitar, and guess which finger. I think that he is trying to tell us something.
This song definitely has its punk credentials in order; showing that basically anyone can get up there and perform and entertain, maybe say something serious, maybe funny. They're getting away from the pompousity of bands like Yes and Floyd and Zeppelin. Loved it.. still love it:-)
Get the album, even more classic lines like ' she thinks I'm dead sexy and butch, much better looking than Starsky or Hutch' it's pure genius and really sums up teenage angst of the late 1970's
The Friday this was released it was played on Rosco's Round Table. That week one of the guests was.....Billy Connolly. His verdict: ''I loved every second of that''.
I know this comment is from 10 years ago and I probably won't be answered, but literally with Peter Hook's book (inside joy division) on top of my thighs and I read about this appearance by Martin Hannett, so I'm here just to see him play in the background.
@@gabrielresendedebortoli9904 that’s so funny because I’m here for exactly the same reason. I had no idea until.I read it 3 minutes ago in Hooky’s book.
We had a chap called Gordon at work. He had some stick.the guy he worked with . Used to sing it to him.and when it came on the radio. The whole shop floor used to sing it lol🤣 🤣
If You like Jilted John Who's Real Name is Graham Fellows he had another persona in the latter 80s called John Shuttleworth he is also on you tube check it out i love the song about the Austin ambassador
Eric Blackburn has just secured a delivery of an extensive range of sand paper. After this, I believe, he's off out with his wife, Val, to Burbage Moor for his usual hang glider run. I expect nothing to go wrong, naturally
I remeber buying this single and the man who runs the record shop who's name is Gordon said that when it first came out he had his mate make him a badge that just said "no I'm not" because whenever he'd walk into the local everyone in a tipsy manor would chant "Gordon is a moron" at him
@Feisty1967 Jilted John is perhaps a young Shuttleworth....work that one out and remain fashionable! Of course, he forgot all about Julie and married Mary, and they all lived happily ever after in Sheffield...
Was it common to get three shots at top of the pops with the same song? Had a tape of this song when it came in....couldnt understand half the lyrics back then.
@@dougie1968 Lydon had been accusing him while he was alive but everyone put it down to Johnny's usual stirring. Andy Kershaw had also said that he'd been warned to steer very clear of Savile. I saw Savile blatantly touch the skin of the breast of one of Pans People on national TV while ostensibly pinning a Jim Fixed It For Me badge to her skimpy costume. It's beyond reasonable doubt that he was a perv and that the establishment turned a blind eye.
@Feisty1967 Yeah its true! His name isn't even John, its Graham Fellows! Still remember him coming on Fully Booked (90's Sunday morning kids show) as John Shuttleworth and the kids were all stunned! It was so funny XD
The guy on the right has the most wonderful dancing I have ever seen. National treasure right before your eyes.
although he looks like a special needs kid got out of the classroom lol.
There’s a clip of another performance of this song where he wears a top with the text ‘I taught John Travolta to dance’. Absolutely perfect.
@@Nightmare98650 class i love that....................great funny he looks like somebody that need help ......................... but its brilliant

Calm down Norm, we listen to way worse shit these days don't you worry.
I don't mind Jimmy saville
I bet all the Gordons out there just loved this track
must be one of the few artists to sing LIVE on top of the pops. GREAT STUFF
I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop - all-time favorite lyric
😂
i actually love this song, its always getting stuck in my head
Leon Trotsky said that as well.
Goodness gracious, now then, now then, what have we here?

Thats genius producer Martin Hannet on bass.
A classic. Great tune.
Love the bit at 1:52 when he forgets to sing !
I wondered what Damon was doing before he sang "Popscene" My question is now answered! :p
The guy on the right is totally awesome lol... my first 7" single...mint!
Martin Hannett in the far back playing, Legend
The young John Shuttleworth, fabulous.
The kid, who lived down the road was called Gordon. He attacked me with a brick, after singing this to him while walking back from school.

Yes. TOTP appearances were strictly governed by chart performance. If you went up you'd be more likely to be invited on again.
I wonder if this was part of the inspiration behind Blur or The Streets? I'm definitely picking up similarities.
