  • FLOW-3D has long had the ability to model non-Newtonian fluids, but FLOW-3D HYDRO added the ability to model these fluids in a more robust tailings physics model. This video is a simple example of a non-Newtonian fluid dam break. The first part of the video is a two-dimensional "slice" model and the second part is a full three-dimensional model. This example uses a homogeneous non-Newtonian fluid, but the tailings model allows you to specify multiple tailing layers, including a Newtonian layer (i.e., water), and see how the various layers intermix during a dam break model. Another advantage of the FLOW-3D HYDRO tailings model is that you can combine both two-dimensional depth-averaged meshes with fully three-dimensional meshes in the same model to help you model larger dam break extents.
