Liked and subscribed! This was helpful, thank you. I tend to like Compressor, then Fuzz, then Boost/Overdrive. Great channel! I look forward to seeing more, and though posted this six months ago, I hope the tour went well. 😀 🎸
Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz is a beast...Run that into an Overdrive, then follow with 10-band EQ to really hone in on the tone. Orgy uses it exclusively to replicate analog synth saw waves while also using them as their main rhythm distortion tone. I have gone one step further with a boss sy-300, and live layered and eq'd the hyper fuzz with a metal distortion simultaneous with slight panning offsets to create a big, grindy yet chuggy tone, and I made it work with wah, which itself is tricky.
it also depends on the pedals themselves but typically yes fuzz to OD to distortion. so much variation between pedal brands and models but the typical Fuzz into OD into Distortion has most always worked best for me in 30 years of playing
Great video. For chord rhythms I prefer the overdrive before the fuzz. But for lead and melody, I prefer the first before the overdrive. I’m going to invest in two overdrives, one before and one after. Then I’m going to take tap dancing lessons.
Thank you!! Yeah- definitely uses for both sounds! I always run two different drives in my setup too- Although, I have not taken tap dance lessons haha!! Though, that's pretty cool!
Set the Fuzz gain so that you get the effect but not all the noise and then turn your guitar down. You'll be surprised how clean it goes. Turn the overdrive gain right down and listen carefully to the dynamics as you play (all that clipping with take out all the feeling from your playing). Experiment with all the amazing flavours of tone as you turn your guitar up.
I put my fuzz (jhs bender, mythos golden fleece) before my overdrive ( greer lightspeed) and it sounds better to my ears. I don't loose the character of my fuzzes. You just have to adjust the output and gain of both pedals to balance to your taste.
they both have their areas of opportunity and can be used in different contexts, i personally started using fuzz before OD because i had a cheap fuzz pedal that used to suck up all the beefyness out of the tone, my OD was used to color in those spots i was loosing and giving it a bit more range
Distortion/drive into fuzz. What type of fuzz makes a big difference. Fuzz b4 to thick and muffled will get lost in mix. Leave the low end to the bass.
the setting of the pedals are also vital. turn the gain down and volume up on the OD to give the distortion a solid push and fuller sound but i like pedals that really alter the sound so i tend to go heavy
I've always ordered it dirtiest to clean, working with the premise that the OD is basically a pre amp stage. The exception would be a vintage style Treble Booster, which is more of a tone shaper and less of a boost, and is treated like a Fuzz up front. You avoid unnecessary gain and compression build up that turns everything into shapeless soup.It is even better if the late stage Drive/Pre is capable of higher voltage and headroom. Some modulation and even time based are better pre Drive as well, like Univibes, Vibratos, short Delays, Phasers, and sometimes gated Reverb. Some compressor circuits are better pre, others post. Pedal order can make all the difference, and I suspect that this is often the cause of a players rejection of certain effects.
with an OD, and not a distortion pedal, the question might be do I want to boost my clean signal before going into my fuzz, assuming you want to use it that way, then the answer is yes, OD before fuzz, however, if I want to boost an already distorted signal, then I would put the OD after. that said, it might also depend on the kind of fuzz or OD you are using, and that would include a distorion pedal. but in the end, the only rule that matters is what sounds good to you. that said, I have all my pedals organized in the most logical way, whatever way that is.
i run my fuzzface germanium into my ts9. i find it almost too muffled with the guitar volume cranked. but when i turn it down i love it. its a bit touchy, at around 8-9 is where i find my best tones
as far as mixes go the one you like and people prefer would be a nightmare and id be blending half the tone out trying to wrestle those incredibly aggressive mids. im boosting my fuzz from now on. thanks for the show down. saved me a few minutes
I think it depends on the context. I just finished my run and the engineer said my stacked tones sounded perfect. But depending on how everything else is hitting in the tracks/ with the band plus the room, it always changes. Like I said, pros and cons to both! Happy it saved you some time :)
This video mainly solidifies my belief that super neat and tidy pedal boards are overrated…the ability to change order of pedals even if it means messier board is the way to go IMO
Fuzz into OD sounds waaay worse. All the high frequencies are gone. The fuzz tone sounds muffled and looses character. Also no pronunciation or attack at all. Thanks for the video!
IMHO, fuzz -> OD is better to get some boosted fuzz tones. Some Melvins, or TAD, or Alice in Chains tones. OD -> Fuzz is more for that pretty sick guitar tones like those from Smashing Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream' LP
I don’t think I agree. Melvins and AiC don’t use fuzz, AiC uses amp distortion and King Buzzo uses a bass overdrive pedal for his guitar. Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins used a opamp big muff into a already driven Marshall for siamese dream. OD into Fuzz is used by the guy from Dinosaur Junior though
It's really a taste thing at the end of the day. Like i said in the video, pros and cons to both. Overdrive at the end of the chain is a brighter sound but it does unnaturally cut a lot of the mid and low frequencies in your signal chain. It's a bit brittle. However, in context of other instruments or depending on the genre, ratty guitar can be cool. It's not a one is the right way sort of thing.
In my experience, putting fuzz into drive performs the same function as running a fuzz into an overdriven amp, which is pretty much a requirement to keep your fuzz from sounding too raspy and thin. I find running a drive into a fuzz subtracts a lot of the fuzz character by tightening the sound up - so the result is you just make your fuzz sound more like a distortion pedal, which defeats the point of using a fuzz.

look at this way to boost a fuzz with an overdrive man.
I preferred the sound of Overdrive into Fuzz. It's clearer sounding, it cuts through the mix better in a band context.
Yeah! I feel that. Well said- I like both for different reasons!

Same...BY FAR.
Agreed 100 percent

I always go OD into fuzz. SD1 into a fuzz face. If I want fuzz into OD, I'll just use the fuzz face into my cranked amp.

Totally agree!! Seems like OD pre fuzz definitely pulls some low end out. Which, depending on what you're going for, could be great or terrible haha.

Makes such a difference!!

In the rhythm part i liked more the ov first fz second. But the opposite in the reverb lead part.

Fuzz into overdrive. WHen you are in the room, overdrive into fuzz is ice picky!

Yeah that's why it's better

Distortion at the end sounds so much clearer. Idk what you want if you are going for but I’d still recommend clean to dirty in pedal order

I dont like both combinations, I guess I just dont like fuzz
Fuzz is for early black sabbath, Hendrix or modern band like Boris and Red Fang

Comment nr 1. F to O more clean fuzz. 2. O to F is darker . More stoner type
Comment 2. To avoid noises u can put FUZZ TO NOISE GATE TO OD
Fuzz first sounded better
🤘🏻
Fuzz first sounded muddy.
It's definitely thicker!! And little more low mid prominent-
🤓OVERDRIVE AFTER DISTORTION SOUNDS MORE HOLLOW / BLANDISH / BORING & LESS DYNAMIC...........
............
............
Fuzz into drive just sounds like mud.
I like fuzzz, with some fuzzzz and a lot of fuzzzz on the side with some side fuzzzz.
Someone get this man at least 5 fuzz pedals!!
we call guys that shave their beard a girl. ay man
