Easy to train, can be adapted, defends with two compact lines, one of the attackers can drop into the midfield and you get an extra man in defense, fashion comes and goes, but the 4-4-2 is always smiling from the corner.
Also you can imply any type of press you want with it (high-medium-low) block

The issue with playing a 4-4-2 in the modern game is that wide midfielders are pretty rare these days. Most wingers today are forwards who are used to play in single-striker formations. So putting them as wingers in a 4-4-2 would naturally turn it into a 4-2-4, which makes you lose the midfield battle against teams that have 3 men in midfield. If anything, the kinds of players today who’d make the most sense as wide midfielders in a 4-4-2 would probably be attacking midfielders with good crossing ability (like De Bruyne), and wing-backs (like Nuno Mendes).
Id say that physically strong midfielders could play that wide role. For an example Fede Valverde or Marcos Llorente. Or you could play it with intelligent explosive guys like Gavi
Chiesa is one even di Maria for thatpurpose
I feel like the 4-4-2 is making a comeback also in the possession phase. City sometimes plays like this and it’s de Zerbis preferred formation
De Zerbi 4-4-2? Thought he used a 4-2-3-1
@@edgarsoto1575 the 4-2-3-1 can attack in a 4-4-2, the MAC can run forward into a Striker.

It's funny to think the 4-4-2 is one of the simplest but most effective formations, especially in the defense.
Basically, 442 is the once popular 2332 (WM) formation, but in horizontal orientation. Like the later, it also forms 4 triangles that sandwiched 2 squares, making it a solid formation with a lot of passing options, and provide easy flexibility to transform the attacks into very controlling 424 or even very aggresive 244.
Diego Simeone is so clever he use is two attackers to draw out his two opponents center backs that is so brilliant that mean no matters how strong opposition defence is it very easily to get pull so a dead lock can be broken. The 4-4-2 formation also made a lot of sense how to generate the midfield so that it can always be solid to break through 🏆🥇⚽
I have Never seen a team so good in sitting 4-4-2 like I saw Simeone's Atletico Madrid.
I never enjoyed this so called "Haraam Ball" from any team except Atletico Madrid ❤
They are dirty, smart with a lot of Dark Arts to grind out what they want mostly.
inverting a fullback is really useful in 442 as it gives numerical advantage in mid considering only 2 central mids occupying the central space.inverting either one or both fullbacks gives cm freedom to push forward
Needed this old style short explanation, tysm
One of the pioneers of formational and positional football! 🙌🏿
Good afternoon FMS, would you be able to make a video explaining your opinion on why 5-3-2 is so fashionable these years? It would be very interesting. 🙏🙏
3-1-3-3 of Bielsa and 3-2-4-1 of Pep
The 4-4-2 can be adapted in so many ways that you can't really say it has obvious weaknesses.
It's compactness means it's good defensively but also for keeping possession...the wide wings tuck in to create the overload in midfield which at the same time creates space for the full backs to push forward...this is how a modern 4-4-2 is implemented.
1 holding and 1 attacking midfield is the shape that optimizes spacing..
The only thing that I'd say works against it is that it is less direct offensively.
You can't pressure the opposition defense as quickly..because the pace of your attack has to be in sync with the wingers getting forward to convert the midfield overload to an overload in the box..
Unai emerys got a nice 4-4-2
Sometimes simplicity comes hand in hand with effectiveness....
Please can you make a comparative of 442 and 433 formation and which one is more suited to crossing/cross-and-nod.
I had a debate with some of my friends about this yesterday
442 is still the king. Most of the new "fancy" tactics are always made with the intention of breaking down low-mid block 4-4-2 in mind.(reason inverted fullbacks became a thing to overcome two strikers press).
Heyy Nice vid🔥🔥🔥

Hi
Could you do a video about the strengths and weaknesses of the 4-3-3?
Already done, check out the link at the end of the video!
442 is a formation highly reliant on individual quality and natural talent , it was during the 442 era we used have a lot of flashy dribbling, ridiculous finishes and goals in short we used to have ballers
New thinkers love to talk about the 4-4-2 but most big clubs press/rest defense is 4-4-2
I like the 433
