Hi great lessons! I also teach Fire Drill procedures (because we will have a fire drill the second week of school), bus safety procedures (stay in the seat, do not kneel on the seat, keep hands and feet to self, do not run to the bus, etc.), tornado drill procedures (because yes, we get a tornado every couple of years), lunch room procedures (we go to the cafeteria and walk through where to go and what to do), and recess procedures - how to use a slide, how to use a swing, how to use the monkey bars, etc. Procedures about scissors - so important (scissors are for paper only, not for hair, not for clothes, not for finger nails, etc.) Thanks!
I always ask a parent to volunteer to help with dismissal the first couple days of school. I would teach the procedures to the parent so the kids learn the correct way to dismiss. Many parents pick up their K-2 kiddos those first few days so it's not too hard to find someone, since they are planning to be there anyway. This relieves so much stress for me those first days!
I like to review how to use art supplies. I’ve noticed 1st graders forget or maybe never learned how to use art supplies properly so when we go over those procedures I notice a big different in responsibility through the year!
I like your I'm good at idea. I will incorporate this into my circle time. I always do a lesson on allowing for personal space when seated on the floor or rug and how to ask for personal space politely if someone is getting too close.
Great tips! I especially like the “I’m good at” activity which I think is a good self-esteem builder. Question not related: where are your bookshelves from (behind you)? I really like them!
Hi Susan , this is my 2nd year teaching 2nd grade and I love it . Thank you for all your amazing strategies!! Do you have a back to school bundle and video . I can’t find it when I search your name ;) Thank you !!
