This is how "reactions" should be done, let's call it a value added reaction. I'm not a guitar player myself but I even love your playing breakdowns at the end. You should check out some other Japanese bands like Neophilia and Maximum The Hormone.
When you pause, please tap that left arrow button to back up 5secs so when it starts back up, we can get back into the song where you left off. We WANT the pauses, we want to hear the commentary, but they do break up the song a bit, and backing up a bit helps reset our minds (and yours) and gets us ready to hear what comes next.
A lot of his pauses are very close together, so I don't know how effective backing up the song will be for him. He'll have to pick and choose when he does it. Doing it every single time may become just as frustrating to some viewers.
Love your breakdowns, very informative and educational! I've read that Kanami asked the rest of the band to come up with something for this song on their own and send it to her, then she blended them into this masterpiece! I also read Misa was a bit drunk when she came up with her part, and regretted it a little, cause she made it almost too hard for her to play on purpose! Great job, as always! Band Maid doing Band Maid things!
@@JbfMusicGuitar I do know that Band Maid's song writing is a collaborative effort. Kanami usually comes up with the proposed song, then sends it to Akane and Misa to fill in or adjust their parts, then they send it back to Kanami to finish the music. Miku writes the bulk of their lyrics with some input from Saiki. Like I said, it's a collaborative effort, with egos placed at the door to make the best song each time.
Ahhhhh... stepping into a soothing bath of Band Maid, with narration. :) Thanks for another interesting Band Maid reaction and analysis. I always learn a little something new. Love the wa-wa peddle.
Oh, and I meant to mention that I really enjoy the split screen of you playing different parts so we can see how they work together. Very cool and informative.
Good question Dave! For example- An E minor chord is made up of 3 notes: E, G and B. So, if E was being played by one instrument, or vocals And something else was playing a B. They would be playing different notes, both notes which are part of the same chord! Hopefully that makes some sense?
@@markyg236 So would the two have to be on the same octave to have the correct tonal qualities? Great observation! A harmony will sound 'tighter' or more compact if the notes are in the same octave. But if you want a more spaced out ascetic, splitting them across octaves would certainly help achieve that. And could the G be coming from a third source, say a bass maybe? Exactly! The note the bass plays has a huge impact on the 'feel' on everything else. Essentially the other notes are stacked on top on the lowest one, so the bass is really the foundation that everything get built upon.
@@JbfMusicGuitar I cheated a little because I knew your content was going to be good. I’m saving the video for this weekend to start learning the guitar riff 🎸😅
the second you said you were going to try to break this down....... i clicked like because you had the balls to say that without knowing what you were getting in to
Would it not make more sense to listen through the song all the way through to hear not only what all the parts played and techniques employed are, but to see how all those things WORK TOGETHER the to take the listener on a MUSICAL JOURNEY and create EMOTIONAL IMPACT? Then, having survey the lay of the land, go back and dissect it bit by bit. I often feel as if we have not HEARD the same song.
It's an interesting idea Greg! I could listen to it first- which to be honest, I wouldn't bother filming, cause it would just be me sitting there! Then go back and break it down. Although, my musician brain is going to be doing all the analysis stuff anyway, can't stop it from doing it thing 🤣
This is a good observation and different from the ppl who are just like "Stop pausing so I can watch the video" which they could just do on Band-Maid's channel anyway. Though I think with song _structure_ as distinct from arrangement, B-M is largely consistent.
@@stevehall5128 Yeah, I've been toying with the idea or really breaking down a song in more detail, rather than a first impressions sort of thing, which might be the happy medium?
@@JbfMusicGuitar I think Greg is talking about taking a _broader_ approach. But you seem like a details guy, so maybe someone else should do that (that approach also wouldn't take advantage of your instrumental skills). IMO every "zoom level" has a great deal to offer, but some people are probably better suited to some levels vs. others, in presenting just as in enjoying. Greg's got a point that no RUclipsr other than I think Baka Broadcast does over-arching, more literary, song-as-a-whole analysis (which of course he gets complaints about...)
@@stevehall5128 Ah, I see. I don't think this format works too well for a broader approach, I'd really need to work parts out and see how they fit together and that sort of thing. If you guys are interested I'd be up for breaking a song down, so I might float that idea in the next week or two
Kanami and Miku inspired me to pick up an electric guitar again to learn. I’ve chosen not to even attempt any band maid songs, not because it’s impossible riffs, but I couldn’t handle whatever butchering I would do to my favorite songs. However your videos are breaking some parts so well and easy to understand that I might just give it a shot. At the very least, your videos are always extremely informative so thank you!
Cheers, I'll try to remember to do that, if I forget then please just remind me! In a nutshell, the guitar is an Ibanez Prestige 550 Ex I've been using an Axe Fx 2 patch that I've based loosely on Kanami rig/sound I don't have the patch up just, but I'll make a note of the blocks used 🤘
We like your tangents. Could you figure out that transition where the beginning leads into the first verse. Champ couldn't figure it out and it confused him a bit. As for the short passages, this is Kanami's "Homework Assignment" for the other ladies of the band. Then she took all of their ideas and combined them into the main song. The Far Away is Miku's, and MISA said that she couldn't recognize her part as she had been drinking when she recorded it. I can't remember who said it, Chase or Champ, but the gist was the typical Band Maid song could be turned into 4 or 5 other songs. Not quite as good, but still decent songs. And I don't think I've heard any Band Maid songs that just fade out. Which makes it much easier to actually end a song. ;) Thank you for the work you put into these reactions/critiques. Let me know if that makes sense!
Unfortunately they haven't been able to capture the perfect live version of this song. Something seems to be vexing the sound engineer on this song. But it is a brilliant exorcise in dynamics that takes you on a wild ride. This also has my favorite Kanami solo to date. Super melodic and just the right amount of chops and a Kirk Hammetty wah kick off. It almost serves as an ode to Kirk, Slash, and Edward all in one solo. I would describe harmonics as giving what would normally be seen as a fretted note and making it sound as an open string. As they do have a combined aspects of both fretted and open string notes. (Natural harmonics at least. Tapped, harp, and pinch harmonics not so much, but those aren't referenced or applied in this song.)
Your breakdown seems to verify that they’ve adopted traditional Japanese scale in this song. It’s typical that they mix it with dance, hip-hop, electro-pop rock or whatever you call it. I’m not musical enough to understand all what you say, but still enjoy it very much.
Suggestions: I think you’d like Puzzle although it’s not on RUclips. Of the official RUclips videos: No God (live), Wonderland (live); Rinne; Alone. Official album tracks on RUclips: Black Hole; Giovanni (both fan favourites I’d say and on the more progressive side of what they do).
Now that you've done the MV for 'Blooming' you have to do the MV for 'Rinne'. Don't make the mistake of doing the LIVE-To-Tape version they did for a television show. It's abbreviated.

@@tonygriffin_ Well at this rate, that's what I'll end up doing!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Ah, my subtle hints worked! :)
This is how "reactions" should be done, let's call it a value added reaction. I'm not a guitar player myself but I even love your playing breakdowns at the end. You should check out some other Japanese bands like Neophilia and Maximum The Hormone.
Thanks bud! Neophilia are certainly on my list of bands to check out, don't recognise Maximum or The Hormone, so cheers for the suggestions!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Actually it's one band called Maximum The Hormone. It's one of those strange Japanese names.
@@BenC460 Lmao 🤣 Thanks for clearing that up- I'd have been confused searching for ages!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Confused is the proper word when discussing MTH
When you pause, please tap that left arrow button to back up 5secs so when it starts back up, we can get back into the song where you left off. We WANT the pauses, we want to hear the commentary, but they do break up the song a bit, and backing up a bit helps reset our minds (and yours) and gets us ready to hear what comes next.
Good shout- I'll try to remember to do that more often! You'll probably need to give me a couple attempts to remember I can do that though 🤣
Totally forgot about that as well, ahh jeez!
A lot of his pauses are very close together, so I don't know how effective backing up the song will be for him. He'll have to pick and choose when he does it. Doing it every single time may become just as frustrating to some viewers.
@@billb.5183 I'll give it a go and see what the feedback is!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Just to be clear. I enjoy your reactions just as they are. Do what is right for you. =)
Thanks Wayne, that's really cool to know! I do really need to learn a bit more about their song writing tricks!
Brilliant! Great to know those part help illustrate things more clearly!
Thanks Jbf!
Cheers dude! 🎸🎶🤘
Great reaction, as always. Thank you for the music lesson and breakdown.
What does different notes of the same cords mean???🐌
Good question Dave! For example-
An E minor chord is made up of 3 notes: E, G and B.
So, if E was being played by one instrument, or vocals
And something else was playing a B.
They would be playing different notes, both notes which are part of the same chord!
Hopefully that makes some sense?
@@markyg236
So would the two have to be on the same octave to have the correct tonal qualities?
Great observation! A harmony will sound 'tighter' or more compact if the notes are in the same octave. But if you want a more spaced out ascetic, splitting them across octaves would certainly help achieve that.
And could the G be coming from a third source, say a bass maybe?
Exactly! The note the bass plays has a huge impact on the 'feel' on everything else. Essentially the other notes are stacked on top on the lowest one, so the bass is really the foundation that everything get built upon.
my prayers were heard, amazing video as always、 congratulations
Thank you so much Cesar! Appreciate that dude 🙌
Kanamincho provides amazing arrangements of their material. She is an awesome talent, perfect every time!
Cheers!
Thanks bud, good to know you liked it!
My favorite BAND-MAID song = instant “like” 👍🏻
Hahah, well that's was easy 🤣
@@JbfMusicGuitar I cheated a little because I knew your content was going to be good. I’m saving the video for this weekend to start learning the guitar riff 🎸😅
@@2abug Sounds like a solid plan to me 🙌
the second you said you were going to try to break this down....... i clicked like because you had the balls to say that without knowing what you were getting in to
thanks a lot! i enjoyed your reaction and teaching . good teacher!!!!
Many thanks, glad you liked this approach! 🙌
Do not cut Kanami's solos. That is criminal....
Hahah, fair enough! 🤣 I just know how fleeting my thoughts can be- if I don't articulate them, they'll probably fade in to the ether!
If you guys are interested I'd be up for breaking a song down, so I might float that idea in the next week or two
Otaku SyFy Nerd Heaven- Band Maid AND giant lightsabers!🤓
Haha, hadn't noticed that, but they do indeed look like huge lightsabers 🤣
Kanami and Miku inspired me to pick up an electric guitar again to learn. I’ve chosen not to even attempt any band maid songs, not because it’s impossible riffs, but I couldn’t handle whatever butchering I would do to my favorite songs. However your videos are breaking some parts so well and easy to understand that I might just give it a shot. At the very least, your videos are always extremely informative so thank you!
kanami's outro soloing on this masterpiece reminds me of king's x...
King's X - nice shout, can totally hear that! 🎸🎶
From what I understand they play like a 2hr 26 song set so yeah Akane (drummer) is a beast
Nice.
I am interested in what your gear is. Sounds super clean. Could you maybe post your equipment in the description of your next video?
Cheers, I'll try to remember to do that, if I forget then please just remind me!
In a nutshell, the guitar is an Ibanez Prestige 550 Ex
I've been using an Axe Fx 2 patch that I've based loosely on Kanami rig/sound
I don't have the patch up just, but I'll make a note of the blocks used 🤘
We like your tangents. Should I ever win the Lotto, I'd hire you and a few other reactors to nothing butt react/critique/breakdown the entire Band Maid catalog.
Cheers dude, appreciate it!
Alright, challenge accepted! Had a quick re-listen with the headphones on, I think from here ruclips.net/video/uUt_JBMocKM/видео.html
It's something like
e--13--14-14--14-14-14-|-13--14-14--13-16-14-|-13--14-14--14-14-14-|-13--14-14--14-14-14-|-13--14-/21-19-18----|
b--14--14-14--14-14-14-|-14--14-14--14-14-14-|-14--14-14--14-14-14-|-14--14-14--14-14-14-|-14--14-/19-19-19----| } Repeat*
g----------------------------------|----------------------------------|---------------------------------|---------------------------------|--------------------------------|
* but with this ruclips.net/video/uUt_JBMocKM/видео.html on the 4th bar:
e----------------------|
b--16--17--16---|
g--15--15--15---|
^ Pitcher shifter set to 1 octave up for that final bar
Sounds about right to me?
Thank you!
Thanks Rob! Much apprenticed 🎸🎶
Now that you've done the MV for 'Blooming' you have to do the MV for 'Rinne'. Don't make the mistake of doing the LIVE-To-Tape version they did for a television show. It's abbreviated.
Cheers, I'll try to remember that!
*Jbf Music & Guitar*
Just to let you know that *BAND-MAID* just dropped a video the other day
*BAND-MAID / カタルシス "Catharsis" Acoustic Ver*
_(The video Limited Time Release so please react to it)_
Cheers for the tips dude, didn't realised it was limited release!
Don't mind your info and technical knowledge but surely you don't have to stop in the middle of passages and lead breaks to talk.
I sort of do Clive! These songs are really quite technically dense, if I don't mention stuff that I notice I just forget it. I've tried to remember all the stuff that happens and pause then go over it all, but I end up forgetting loads of interesting concepts!
If I jotted them down on some paper I could unleash them all in one go, but then I'd not be paying attention to what's going on. You're probably right in that there is likely a more elegant solution, but I've yet to figure it out 🤘
@@JbfMusicGuitar I guess you could cheat and listen first and then react as I am sure some reactors do as it's painfully obvious. And then you could say so and why in your disclaimer. LOL. Or pull back to start of passage after your comment as some do.
@@clivematthews5296 Yeah, there's something really disingenuous about watching through first, that I'd feel weird doing. The moving back a few seconds is a good idea for sure. I'm still editing down the next one, so hopefully I'll remember to pop the video back for the one after that!
@@JbfMusicGuitar excellent, pity you haven't yet tried Nightwish but there you would upset hundreds if not thousands of the Nightwish army if you interrupted at inappropriate times without backtracking. Lol.
@@clivematthews5296 I've heard of Nighwish, but only know a handful of their songs, any in particular you reckon would be good to breakdown?
Blooming is OK, but I think more interesting songs, musically speaking, are ones like Bubble, Manners, Warning, After Life, Before Yesterday, etc.
I really like the sort of electro rock/dance style in this one!
I respect you for reaction to Band Maid, but I'm here to enjoy music and hear what you thought... Somehow i can't really enjoy the music if you pause a lot.. Thank you
No worries! There's always the original video if you just want to hear the song 🤘
oh Akane eats like Ruffy so she is good on that.....no honestly Akane Nao Fumiya....all drummers at a level are just athletes mad respect
Fumiya is living proof that you don't need ovaries of steel to be a great rock/metal drummer. You have probably already seen them but the "Quadratum from Unlucky Morpheus" videos are a great showcase of his talents.
These. Girls. Crush.
Agree with you there Paul, this is one of my favourites!
The thumbs down is pausing on *Kanami* solo 😝 _(Be kind rewind)_
7:22 Kanami’s way of disposing tracks coz she’s written too much 😅
Hahah, well so long as it fits the song it's all good! 🤣
ON OFF ON OFF
?
I can understand the pause, but a bit excessive
Fair enough Mike- I try my best to explain that's what I'm gonna do here, it's not for everyone!
Stop solo.....nooooooo
Sorry, couldn't follow it anymore. It is a difference if you are pausing at the right step to explaine something,, but to rip apart every solo and pause sometimes every ten seconds is really awful.
A good explanation how it should not be done. There are guys who pause also and give explanations and I really appriciate, but you have no feeling, when it can be done, just blubbering into the song. No more!!!!
Ah well, can't please everyone! I do say I'll pause and breakdown concepts right at the start, can't do much more than that I'm afraid!
Did you watch the last half of the video my dog?
