I have watched this 4part series so many times now, i just love it! This is the form for me!!! Most of the 12 Seitei waza are Muso! Matasaburo-sama is awesome!!!
"I-ai jutsu", speedy sword tactics against very near enemies, are various. All the samurai had his own tactics of sword suitable for him. After 1860's theoretical forms are determined by some schools of swordmanship. I think this film is one of them. Tactics against opponent at all occasion, in room or at gate or on road, sitting or bowing or walking, and so on,
I dunno where u live but in France there are many great teachers for many asian martial arts. I'm about to start Iaido and my teacher will be a 35 years experimented one. Many french teachers are approved by japanese masters, and many masters visit french clubs for demonstrations. Indeed France is well-reputed in martial arts so I suppose we have a link with Japan for many years.
hmm... I too train Muso Shinden Ryu. A summer camp is coming up soon in Gothenburg here in sweden, that Shizufumi Ishido, 8 Dan Iaido Hanshi, 8 Dan Jodo Kyoshi will lead. It will be great!
A plastic Saya is softer than a wooden one and can sometimes bend but a bokken is far easier to noto (as long as you don't get wood burns) as the Koiguchi is far larger.
somewhere between 1957 en 77 i ve heard. looks like an old 8mm projector... at least people will see junto for the first time. i am grateful.i personally favor inyo...
Very nice! So very simular to Seitei Iaio, i can see Muso Shinden Ryu has had a major influence in the development of Seitei Iai! I study Seitei & Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido! I would like to study Muso Shinden Ryu next, but there isnt a Muso dojo or sensei anywhere near me! But thanks for posting such a great vid!
In the Zen Nippon Kendou Renmei video with Ogura sensei the proportion between sword and stature looks quite different. It seems to me that in this one the sword is longer. I'm wondering why...
Some Muso Shinden stylists insist on slightly longer swords...my Dojo in Toride, Japan did not, but I have seen many who do. Perhaps Nagae sensei belongs to the 'longer sword' school of thought.
"The Buddha hung out mutton but he only sold dog meat"! The correct understanding of Iaido is no different, this is an oral experience, and there can be no "Do" outside of this.
Any art that is perceived as being above criticism is too authoritarian to be a functional Do. Explain the bunki for Shohatto and In Shinza or oral argument I will prove you don't know. demonstrate Nukiuchi according to the current federation and by comparison most sensei will overwhelmingly prefer my approach. What does Kakureshite mean and what does Minori have to do with it. Show me by fair Shinza, or tolerate criticism!
With a few minor differences, this is exactly the same that My Sensei taught me. I would not say that is has degenerated in to useless rituals in choreography. I would say most of what you see is people that really never learned the proper way.
Yeah, right, you speak as if you actually LIVED 100 years to see the changes, or you have a time machine to actually SEE performances of 100 years ago, and as if you actually had AUTHORITY to criticize the whole history and legacy of Iaido in particular and Budo in general. Laughable epic fail. Besides, your comment is full of ignorance. In my dojo, and I doubt we are special, every single kata of Seitei Iai and Muso Shinden Ryu is explained in context: why this movement, why this angle, why this sequence, why this posture, etc. We even practice 1 on 1 with bokkens, so we can grasp the fundamentals! Learn a bit before spiting nonsense. I dropped the "choreography prejudice" within my first 6 months of practice. Had you practice at least that period of time you would have come to the same conclusion.
Best of the best iaijutsu omori ryu happiness martial art. 👌👍

Another wonderful archive
yo estoy practicando esta escuela...gracias a quien lo haya puesto.
Thanks to youtube I'm guessing Nagae Matasaburo sensei is famous beyond all proportions by now :)
yea, i agree. he just kind of let it slide back into saya...both his hands' movements are so well synchronized.
Very nice video, I study MSR and enjoyed that alot.
It depends on the saya really (I used to use a hard plastic one but the newer ones are softer) and how tight your obi is.
This old man could take your life away in the moment-
sunaj

i study MSR (winchester, ky) and these videos are always inspirational.

He exudes experience.
Does anyone know when this was filmed?
Yay this will help me a lot thanks for puting it :)

Wow. So dam good
Is he practising well?
I practice a similar style. Matasaburo Sensei is the master of the master of the master of the master of my master.
Some Muso Shinden stylists insist on slightly longer swords...my Dojo in Toride, Japan did not, but I have seen many who do. Perhaps Nagae sensei belongs to the 'longer sword' school of thought.
MSR favors katana longer than the standard height-length relationship.
I'm up near Ashland, Ky. Who teaches MSR in Winchester?
YES THE STYLE IM PRACTICING IS HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE MUSO SHINDEN ITSUMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! AHHH MADE YUKATA!!!
i train MSR too, where you located?
I have a plastic saya and it often bends at the Kurigata level when I'm doing noto.
try searching google for iaido or kendo with the name of your country probably you will find some dojos hopefully in your city
Yea but the saya is so cranky that you cant really do a sayabiki like with an iaito
Books OMORI RYUGATA IAI DO
I'm surprised they have Junto online here. That kata is not meant for public display. It's kind of disgraceful to find it here.
thanx anyway

Upon reflection of these videos, Iaido in practice has been turned into useless rituals in choreography for over 100 years!
