  • Fighting back tears, Ahmed Kathrada, who was jailed with Mandela on the Robben Island and is a family friend, said the last time he saw Mandela was when the anti-apartheid hero was fighting for his life in hospital.
Kathrada said he met Mandela 67 years ago, and was saddened to see that he had become a "shadow of his former self", but spoke highly of his campaign against racial segregation.

This was a moving tribute that has a very carefully crafted message. This is the first honest description of the state of our beloved Tata before he died - as compared to the "news" we got. He says that Mandela has joined the "A" - which by implication means we now have a "B" team. Unlike Zuma's list of the people Madiba will join - the list of AK is more inclusive. It also included people from other organisations -including Helen Suzman & Sobukwe - thus giving credit to all. He attributes our freedom to many men & women and the masses of the people and hence gives power back to the people, His deliberate mention of the Chapter 9 institutes (although this is omitted on the officially released speeches) is very instructive to the current leadership. I do believe that AK was making a call for us to defend our constitution and stand up against the injustices, corruption and misuse of power. He wanted a true democracy - Aluta Continua! We have to still fight for that true democracy.

I never noticed this, till he reiterated it time and time again. You are right, I think he voiced it clearly when he thanked the chapter 9 organisations.
