Matthew you are an artist and a craftsman. They always look so much more beautiful after you restore them. I still keep some beat up marbles but some I like to have you restore. Those turned out amazing.
You do wonderful work. I was wondering if you provide this service, for a fee of course. I have a couple of old German that could use a little polishing.
Occasionally I accept a commission to polish marbles. I barely cover the expense of my time. You can find my email address on my home page and click on "more..."
We have been digging our family farm that was built in 1873 and marbles are our favorite find. We have a jar full from clay to modern. Might try polishingsome newer ones but the older hand made will stay in the display case.
Those are nice Hey have you watched Rocks Cousteau doing his awesome marble digs on trash dumps? He also finds those German hand made spiral swirls like yours in this video
Yes, I have watched some of his videos. It is amazing what he finds in the stream below where the marble companies used to be and where the cullet and rejects were dumped. It is also amazing what he finds in old decomposed trash heaps. I have found old marbled digging in my garden or yard. Someone needs to invent a marble detector! LOL
Have you taken before and after measurements of the marbles, like diameter or weight? I'd be curious to know how much (or rather how little) loss there is when polishing. I see both sides of the debate, but that shine and detail afterwards is just breathtaking! Fantastic work - thank you for sharing!
Yes. I am often very surprised at how little material actually needs grinding. You think it is a lot but most of the time, less that 0.125 inch or 1/8 to remove most bad chips.
Quick question: with such precise work like this, how do people know marbles have been polished and ground? I know one method is by looking at the pintails to see if the lines no longer meet at the poles, but neither of these marbles look to be affected that way at all. Incredible job.
That is a great question. You are right. The pontil (small swirly where the marble was cut from the main stick of glass) of the marble generally is ground away. Also, any glass folds are ground away. And the marble is perfectly round when I finish with it. Vintage hand made marble gnerally are never so round. For machine made marbles the folds can get ground away.
GOOD EVENING FROM WATERVILLE, MAINE. I WAS DOING SOME RESEARCH ON ANTIQUE MARBLE RESTORATION AND CAME ACROSS YOUR VIDEO. I WANTED TO ASK IF YOU PROVIDE A POLISHING SERVICE AND IF SO HOW MUCH WOULD YOU CHARGE. THANKS. AMAZING VIDEO BY THE WAY. KINDEST REGARDS, ALTON GILL
I don't make glass marbles. Check out Moon Marble Company in Kansas City Kansas. They have a very nice collection of hand made marbles for sale. Also see Mad Man Marbles on Ebay. He may have some for sale.
The grinder. Not really. There are many commercially made large three cup sphere grinders. I just needed something very small that I could do 3/4 inch to 2 inch marbles on. I also polish agate marbles I make with this little machine. Thanks for the question.
Please comment, Where do I get the components to build such a specialized piece of equipment? Or does it make sense to send them out to you or some other person like you?
I'm almost 70 and I have some marbles that I had when I was a kid. But a lot of them. I got rid of and now I'm keeping a few if you so i'd like to find out what they could be worth.. Unfortunately, I got about 6 shooter marbles that I have really deep scratches and chips. I think I should just throw them but who's gonna buy those. I used to play marbles with the boys and get so good that they didn't want me around. Because I take their steelies and I take their cobs. And they were angry LO. L.
I've been collecting since the 70s and I never purchase polished marbles I avoid them at all costs and always try to get them in their original form. Polishing a marble in my opinion is the same as cleaning a vintage coin or gun remove the patina remove the value end of story ✌️ anyhow I'm glad you're into marbles I just hate seeing you polish them cheers 🍻
I understand your sentiment. There is history in all those moons and chips. :) However, the old beauty can be appreciated when polished. Thanks for commenting.
Hello, if you are still interested it was my marble that he polished. I'm selling it along with the rest of my German swirls and everything else I have.
The fact Matthew is a Master Marble maker makes these turn out ultra nice.
Thanks, Greg. Very kind of you.
I was NOT EXPECTING this! Very nice, screw others opinions on polishing, this is much more beautiful.
I agree. Sometimes things just need to be restored to appreciate the beauty
Matthew you are an artist and a craftsman. They always look so much more beautiful after you restore them. I still keep some beat up marbles but some I like to have you restore. Those turned out amazing.
Thanks. They did turn out pretty.
@@MarbleGems do you ever put any kind of oil on your marbles? Like olive or linseed oil? Sorry if that’s a dumb question
They sure look nice polished.
I agree!
great more to the 3 head unit, awesome tool you built, thanks for posting the videos, the marbles look great
thank you.
Beautiful work.
thank you. I am always amazed myself.
I’ll always want my marbles looking there best not into them for the money. They look amazing
Thanks. It is always fun to see the marble transform from an old beat up think to something of beauty.
Fantastic device for polishing.
A true engineer!
Thanks.
I try...

I have been working in my garden before and found marbles. The house was built in 1968. Funny how those little marbles never loose their luster.

I really don't sorry. I have done it in the past, but it was only as a favor.
Gracias!
de nada
I need one of these!!!! Would you ever make me one?

Do you offer this as a service? I have a large German Swirl I would like to pay to have polished.
Occasionally I polish marbles for patrons. See my About page where you will find my email address and email me.
Beautiful work. And such an innovative device and process. Did you invent this
Device?
The grinder. Not really. There are many commercially made large three cup sphere grinders. I just needed something very small that I could do 3/4 inch to 2 inch marbles on. I also polish agate marbles I make with this little machine. Thanks for the question.
can you grind an old German swirl for me, I like your work
possibly. Send me an email. See my About page or home page.
Would this process take off the pontil?
yes. That is a downside
Hi do you do this what do you charge to do this
generally the big marbles start at $35
Oh, if only I could afford to have this setup! How much do you charge? Do you do this for others?!? I have a German I love but is all scratched up!
Generally I start at about $30 a marble. It takes a lot of time. I don't do it as a business, more of a favor.
You haven't done a video in awhile. I hope you are doing alright. Thanks for your generous, enriching videos!
I am doing great. I have three channels and most of my focus in on OutFishing13.
@@MarbleGems cool! Will check it out also
How can you be reached for restoration/polishing my marbles
See my About page on the Home page of my channel. My email is there
Are you in Utah by any chance? I am wondering if we are neighbors! I want to start making marbles.
Yes. I live in Provo
Excellent vid! Couldn't see what happens to a pontil mark after polishings, can some of it remain?
no, not really. The pontil gets removed and polished. Most of them are gone though through all the chips.
@@MarbleGemsHello! Would you kindly send me your contact address to which I'd send a photo and request for quotation. Thank you.
Rat rod or finest kind of custom car. Best analogue I can come up with.
it works.
Please comment, Where do I get the components to build such a specialized piece of equipment? Or does it make sense to send them out to you or some other person like you?
I recommend making one if you like this sort of thing. I bought all my components on Amazon and the hardware store.
Great job! Where did you buy this machine?
I made it.
Is that a yellow core?
maybe. I am not a marble collection professional on old German marbles.
How can I reach you? Do you still offer these services? Thank you!
See my About tab. My contact email is there.
Hi are you still polishing marbles
Not as much as I used to. But I have done some in the last 12 months. Send me an email
Nice contraption.
Thanks. It has worked well.
What’s the sanding pads ur using
May i ask what sanding pads you're using, WOULD have great quick results. Just saying.
watch this video. I use 4 inch polishing pads for a granite or stone polishing grinder ruclips.net/video/Y2ynrV8IWS8/видео.html
see my comment.
Can you build me one of those machines?
I am not sure i want to make another one. I need to publish my how-to video showing people how I made this one.
Nice!
Thanks!
Can I send you a marble to polish for me?
Send me an email to MarbleGems@gmail.com. I need a picture and size.

People do buy polished.
good to know
My first youtube video was on my collection of marbles... ITS GOTTEN SOOO MUCH BIGGER SINCE THEN! its wild..

Keep going! One cannot have too many marbles. I carry one in my pocket every day
I can’t see where that would decrease the value of the marbles
Some collectors only want pure original. The person I sent these too was thrilled with the finished marbles.
@@MarbleGemsI was more then thrilled....AMAZING.
I read the yellow core is most rare.
interesting!
that marble is worth big bucks
It's my marble and I'm selling if you're interested.
It's for sale if you are interested
I am sure it is. I have seen them sell on Etsy for over $100 each.

i knew a man who heated marbles and redid them.he used carbon molds.
wow. That would be fascinating to see. Mad Man Marbles would remelt old marbles and make bigger ones. Seems he did some from JABO marbles.
