I think those signs are unique to that particular stretch of Aussie freeway. Everywhere else in Australia that I've seen with electronic variable speed limits (including in Brisbane) uses a stretched out sign. Thanks for watching!
@@BD-yl5mh I have literally never seen them in any other Australian state or in the other countries I've been to that closely follow the United States' MUTCD (Manual of Traffic Control Devices). I think Queensland literally made their own signage for those overhead electronic speed control signs, lol. They do the job though; very easy to understand and read.
Like Melbourne Brisbane had a 1960s freeway plan drawn up by Wilbur Smith and Associates with a number of inner city routes never built. M1 Gateway was the north-south freeway east of the city, the M5 western and M3 southeastern freeways were built but an inner city Central Freeway going around the CBD was not. Later the Inner city bypass did eventuate on the northern edge. A ghost bridge in Bowen Hills exists on Markwell Street where the Central Freeway was to go underneath. In addition a reservation exits from the northern suburbs which was from the Northwestern freeway - only the very end portion has been built as Gympie Arterial Road.
A map of the proposed system can be seen here: www.qhatlas.com.au/map/development-plan-brisbane-roads-1965 At the time Brisbane still had its tram system like Melbourne with the tracks set in concrete. BCC mayor Clem Jones along with this report recommended closure which was helped along by a major depot fire in 1962. The system finally shut down in 1969 with most of the tracks still under the bitumen to this day.
Interesting 1970s film on driving safely on freeways - the scenes were filmed on the Southeastern freeway, now part of the M3 in Woollongabba near the Captain Cook Bridge. Australian urban freeways all used Botts dots for the lane markings until the 2000’s ruclips.net/video/40vZ5VyiOgs/видео.html
For those interested, as stated the bridges were duplicated with the first bridge (southbound) you crossed was the new bridge with the second bridge (northbound) was the original bridge opened in 1986 which had two way traffic, 3 lanes each direction.
Seen pictures of the span in its original configuration; that must have been something of a harrowing experience. Must say the reconstructed Gateway Motorway & Bridge is one of my favorite urban rides in Australia. Great stuff.
A another great 👍 video 👍Thank you for sharing with as,,,I just remember how was looking a Gateway? What a big change. Today looks amazing 😉 Thank You Again 🤗🤗🤗
Could you please do a drive through the Brisbane Inner City Bypass spaghetti junction, it's northside before the Clem Jones tunnel, got lost on that interchange a couple of times!
I'm surprised how the Department of Transport & Main Roads was even able to squeeze in that huge interchange into a relatively small space. Some really impressive stuff indeed, and yes, it can indeed a bit confusing to navigate. Thanks!
I actually made this interchange the subject in one of my Facebook fan page posts, if you didn't get to see it. I can definitely say that in all of my driving through 45 US states, 5 Canadian provinces, 2 Mexican states and now 3 Australian states, I have never seen another interchange like it before. facebook.com/333333487085/photos/a.10150251005137086.338837.333333487085/10154313077697086/?type=3&theater
Great video FB! I can see the Gateway Bridge out my window right now, all lit up ;) I actually have a couple of these over on my channel, but I bow to your greatness Brent ;) Cheers from Brisbane
You must live somewhere pretty close to the Eat Street Markets then? If so, I'm envious, lol. The closest thing we have to something like that in San Francisco is the Off The Grid food truck gathering every Friday evening, but it doesn't have the physical infrastructure constructed like over at the Eat Street Markets. Thank you very much for watching!
On the south side actually, up on a hill so a clear view to the bridge. Have not been to check out Eat Street yet, they recently moved a little closer to the bridge with a better space for vendors and customers - they were making way for some development next to the cruise terminal at Hamilton.
Great vid, been over that bridge a number of times too. Hopefully when you are in Auckland the waterview tunnel connection is open finally. It will be a great video the first ring road for Auckland finally.
I hope so, too. My layover would be at the very end of August or very early September. I think the government was quoted as saying the project would be delayed 3 months from the originally announced opening date, so I guess that would put the revised opening date around mid-July. Really excited to check out Auckland's motorway network and walk around some of Auckland's best districts...beyond the waterfront and CBD, Ponsonby, Parnell and Newmarket all look pretty cool to me. Thanks for watching!
I like that bridge with the other nice roads too. I rarely comment on RUclips as Im those that just view and leave, but viewing your vids over the last free week of mine is a pleasure, didnt realise you had alot, hek you get around! you know alot about the places too which I learn new stuff, cheers
Thank you very much! I did see your comment a few days ago, but I've been incredibly busy and just forgot to respond. Catching up on comments now. In case you're wondering why I have videos from so many random places...I actually grew up and still reside just outside of San Francisco, but my girlfriend and 16 month old son are located out in Sydney, Australia (they're both Australian citizens). Hence, all the Aussie videos (I've been a half dozen times over the past 3 years), and since I've been utilizing Auckland for elongated layovers to help break up the time I spend in the air, I've been able to grab quite a bit of footage from there as well. Next time I head back to Sydney, I'm going to make a run for Wellington and get some Wellington Motorway and more Highway 1 & 2 footage from there. In the future, I'm going to look at other destinations for layovers and filming opportunities between San Francisco and Sydney.
@@FreewayBrent Nice one, good you see your famz in Sydney congrats. I travel to see my parents in Syd on occasions too, well its just a quick jump across the Taz compared to where you come from, but Syds a nice place. Also San Fran is a good looking place, I like the Golden Gate Bridge and the fact its in California. I will definitely look forward to future videos you make of Welly and other places around the Pacific on your travels.

Not sure where I got my info from, but I was sure that Aussies drove on the right hand side of traffic....guess you learn something new all the time :D
If you ever come back, continue north on the M1 for about 50-60 minutes to get a great scenic drive up to the Sunshine Coast. The view of the nearby Glasshouse Mountains is stunning
One day! I was in Brisbane/Gold Coast for 5 days and simply ran out of time to explore further. Girlfriend and I had to return down to Sydney. Eventually, I'd love to get up that way...from my understanding, the motorway has been widened from 4 to 6 lanes north of Brisbane in recent times, yeah?
@@FreewayBrent I believe that’s correct, I don’t go that way very often though. There is a bit of a joke that the Bruce Highway is always under construction though! However I believe that recently that reputation bore fruit yes :P
Will probably visit, sometime in 2019. Auckland is most likely next, as I'm looking into doing a layover there during my next Australia visit. Thanks for watching!
I sure do miss Brisbane...picturing myself eating my way once again through New Farm, Southbank, the West End, Paddington, Bulimba, Fortitude Valley, and last but not least, the Eat Street Markets. What a great city!
I actually do...the Eastern Freeway, the Melbourne Ring Road (M80), as well as more inbound footage of the Monash Freeway into CityLink, all the way out to the West Gate Bridge. Not sure when I'll get around to those bits of footage, but it's def. there for whenever I find the right songs for those rides!
Thank you for uploading. Could you pls tell me where to find those direction signs? Find them really hard to read if driving too fast and driving on the highway for the first time
Will you ever do a video in Cincinnati? I live there, and when you are comming up I-71 75 (on the KY side) You get a beautiful view of the skyline! Also I- 275 and I- 471 have a nice view, but 71 75 is the best. We have some interesting bridges, especially this one bridge, forget what it's called but it's a very old 2 way bridge into downtown.
Would love to! However, Cincinnati is far away from me and not a place that is convenient for me to return to anytime soon. Will agree with you; Cincinnati has some fun freeways to drive. Absolutely love the views and steep descent along the NB ride along I-71/I-75 as you drop down towards the river, as well as the ride through downtown along I-71 and US 50. Great stuff. Will also agree with you that you get some nice views along 471. FreewayJim has you covered for Cincinnati. I do have some footage from Pittsburgh that I never worked on that I should finally get around to...I know it's not Cincinnati, but having some Midwest coverage would be nice.
They're quite common here. they're small in comparison to the ones that travel between regional centres of Australia. Google "Road Trains", unique to australia
Ha It's Kinda Like Me Because Since I'm So In The Gateway Brige And Motorway. And A Good Slap On The Like Button And A Brand New Subscriber And As Usual A Big Rate From 10 Out Of 10!
nice video and for the Australian Kenworth truck from 1:20-1:30 it can be replicated in the in the United States if you have a class A commercial license with triple endorsement but tolls will be expensive such as I-95 NJ Turnpike where it costs $49.50 with E-Z pass.
I think Sydney is since it's the largest Finantinal district in Australia.. As people have tole me. I think Melbourne and Sydney are the largest districts in Australia. Random fact they don't sell crown vic cars over here. Because the Australian Motor industry's over run international sales form the ford Falcons
Just a shame that Brisbane City streets are not as easy to navigate as the motorways are. It is an absolute nightmare trying to drive through the city.
"When all signs above are blank"... THAT would take me a while to get used to seeing! 😀 Great video!
