I grew up in Bulleen in 1984 , just finished my HSC at Marcellin College- your video details how I remembered Doncaster (Shopping town) and Box Hill. In fact, my first ever paid job was working at Doncaster cinemas! I was there for the opening- Mad Max 2 and Puberty Blues were the first movies shown there. Thanks for the memories!
This is really good. So precious to preserve memories of a better time in Melbourne. Unfortunately Melbourne doesn't look the same anymore. Box hill looks horrible now. So does Doncaster. I've lived in the Doncaster area for over 40 years and this is awesome to how the place was back then.👍🥰
OMG how the traffic has changed, I grew up in Blackburn and I visit my elderly parents there often. The traffic around the area is now chaos, miss the old days
starts out of Heath street on to Macedon road and the rest should be recognizable to those that have taken the trip up Tram Road/Station street to Box Hill South - Cantebury road.
I think it was built in the 60's. and i can still remember the dairy, where the milkmen kept their horses, on the corner where Auto barn/officeworks now no is.
Gavin it feels like you knew exactly what you were doing in 84 .. like you knew how important what you documented is now. If only we could go back to those brilliant simpler cleaner days.
Rats... I really wish you filmed the whole drive down Tram Road, over the old bridge, past the BMX track in Eram reserve, before that whole Eastern Freeway was made, and then up Station Street through Box Hill North to where you actually started filming Box Hill... I really would have loved to see that again before it all changed forever. Really pains me to think of what that whole area has become as it's really difficult to reminisce about the past when so few remnants of that past are still in existence. Still, it was great seeing the old Doncaster Shoppingtown that I grew up with again after so many years, so thank you very much for that!
Yeah unfortunately at the time of filming you are more likely to think that you might be filming too much. It was for some English family members at the time just to get a feel of the Australian suburbs and you are never anticipating watching it 30 odd years later.
What’s interesting is that a lot has changed in Doncaster since then such as the cinema being rebuilt with a new multi story car park underneath it while there’s a Cole’s supermarket where Kmart used to be with a massive food court above it! Also this would of been before the 1988-1991 renovation of the shopping centre in Doncaster! :)
Holy cow! What a gem of a home video! I was 19yo at the time and living in Blackburn, but you drove past Landale St in Box Hill Sth (just before turning into Canterbury Rd). We used to live down the end of that street (cnr Clydesdale St). Doncaster Shoppingtown & Box Hill were my go-to places. There's bugger-all traffic! Fun, carefree days when Melbourne was still marvellous. Oh, for a time-machine! *as a side note, I almost got busted by cops at the multi-storey Shoppingtown carpark with my girlfriend whilst 'parked' in my Mum's Datsun 1200 coupe! Good times.
Back then Box Hill station also only had two platforms between 1983 and 1987 while the shopping centre was being built with the now abandoned platform 1 in use during that construction period! :)
Went past where I was brought up. 512 Station Street,Box Hill. There was the infamous Greta's Milk Bar directly opposite us, and another one about 100m up on the same side of the road as us. Amazing to think there were two milk bars so close together.
Wow, that's a ZJ/ZK Fairlane... I remember that dashboard! Actually I believe it's a ZK as it has the plastic button on the T bar. Or it might even be an FD LTD.

I was probably working in the camera shop in Shoppingtown as you drove past. Great to see that urban history.
Thanks Gavin. Great to go for a ride 33 years in the past.
A lost world. Thanks for uploading
wow!! Box Hill certainly has changed! as has "Shoppo"!!! I grew up in Blackburn so remember all of this!
That’s amazing to see my hometown back in the 80’s!! Westfield was there! Didn’t know it’s been around so long.
Wish I was around at that time

Box Hill sadly gone forever!
If only the traffic was as good now! I remember the area very well.

Awesome video you drove right past my house :)

Box Hill central was completed 1987, looks like things were well under way even in 1984
Box Hill Central opened for trade in November 1984. Although wasn't officially completed until 1987.
Wow. Incredible. Thanks for posting
exactly how I remember it before joining the RAAF in 1985. Been back a few times and Melbourne just scares the hell out of me now.
You drive past my old house in Macedon Road at the start of this video

3:00, those twin cinemas. '80s gold
Compare the amount or lack of traffic compared to 2022!
Great video Gavin Bring's back so many memorie's would be good if you had a 80's video on a Bulleen Sunday Drive .
Wow, that's a ZJ/ZK Fairlane... I remember that dashboard! Actually I believe it's a ZK as it has the plastic button on the T bar. Or it might even be an FD LTD.

Be carefully.
Wow! Let’s just say that Australia in 1984 looks and would probably smell a lot better than Chinatown in 2022🤮
nineteen seventy five cars.
Table moth
I can’t help but noticed the lack of vandalism and graffiti - makes me sad :-(

Exactly. The place is an absolute fucking shithole now.
