Raphtalia's time as a slave in the manga and light novel is a bit more fucked up. They tamed it down a bit for the anime.
To be honest i have seen the anime like 5 times now problem is that the anime is a hell of a lot different from the manga if there is something u guys got lost or didn't understand because it didn't give enough information is because it got cut there is a lot of world building that got cut but the anime and manga are awesome

After rewatching this a couple times, I'm wondering if the old shield hero led a revolution with demi-humans and brought them to a free country. Everyone hates both demis and the shield hero, the king kept saying he lost a family, and demis seem to revere the shield hero as a god and savior.

In light novels and manga, these episodes were much darker, and some of the actions of the main characters were more morally gray. That will be common in this anime.
In the manga, raphtalia kept a smile through all the torture and rifana doed right beside her in the cell. But raphtalia couldn't process her friends death and was in denial. The torturers made her realize her friend was dead and Raphtalia's smile finally disappeared to the sadistic pleasure of the assholes who told her.
Then her literally forgetting how to smile as well.

Raphtalia kept a smile same as anime for the same reason to give others hope. Except in the manga she looked creepy when she did it, definitely an improvement in the anime.

In the light novel that tub of lard didn't even have a name, it was invented for the anime. Since the light novel is from Naofumi's POV we don't know a character's name if he doesn't know what it is. He does call people by nicknames. For example Van, the guy who let them stay with them, is called "Nice Guy." Naofumi sold him some stuff on another visit. However they couldn't sell anything in the Idol's city.
You wouldn't think such a fan man could put up a fight, but he is level 80, having undergone the class up Raphtalia and Filo were denied. Raphtalia was level 40, but she also works out, having a good deal of muscle mass for her size. Also the effects of Noafumi's shield gave her much better stats then someone of her level would normally have.
In the light novel Naofumi figured he had no right to stop Raphtalia from seeking revenge. She didn't kill Idol, but not for a lack of trying. She was the one who pushed him out the window. Still no idea why he thought he could control the T-Rex.

Seems like a lot of people missed the flag reference in the food. From the second episode. The little flag that was on her food when he first got her. It came round circle to this episode. It had a way deeper meaning to her.

The changes in episode 14 still bother me. In the LN and manga Naofumi doesn't try to stop Raphtalia. He's okay with her killing him and doesn't try and talk her out of it at all. Because he still wants to kill Myne and the King. She also does try and kill him in the LN and manga. She wanted to be a murder and Naofumi wanted to let her do it. He just survived the attempt. I generally don't like them making all the characters lighter and more "generic mainstream".
I liked them being willing to murder those that wronged them. If you can just swallow your hate every time, then it doesn't make you look strong, it makes that hate seem small. It's exactly their early anger that makes their later shift to overcoming their anger so meaningful. If you were never going to give in to your anger, then it means nothing to overcome it later.
Oh god if they sensor such a minor thing what are they going to do with mynes second punishment if they get that far

The one thing in Raphtalia's backstory is - it could've been Rifana instead of her who met Naofumi and got saved. Her being sold was the only reason she's survived so far.
This could haunt her with some major Survivors Guilt.
This got me in my feelings man. Raphtalia had known love but it was ripped from her and the light in her eyes had faded. It took but one person to rekindle that fire and in doing so, became what guards that fire and keeps it burning.
I did tear up with this episode . Great reaction guys

In the first volume of the light novel, Raphtalia actually did see her dead body the next morning. That sight is what finally broke her smile and give up hope.
That same volume also shows more details of how f***ed up Myne really is.

When controlling something much stronger than you, NEVER EVER fucking turn your back to it while acting cocky.
Crazy part about it. This took place in a matter of 3 months. The first wave happened. She got taken with the rest, got sent away to the slave trader. Took a month to get stronger to fight the 2nd wave, at he village (2nd month) and then the 3rd month (or Wave) dealt with the ship and glass. So she must've died legit right after she got sold. Sad af.
Hell yeah, get in your feels bro, that's what these scenes are meant to do. I love it when you see reactors get into the moment like that
This was the toned down version. In the first volume of the light novel there was an extra chapter from Raphtalia's POV. The cerberus attacked the village at a very bad time. They had strong fighters, but they were away on hunting trips at the time. Sadina, who got named dropped this episode, was off fishing. It went into detail about the fight with the monster and while it was able to kill a good deal of the villagers they didn't go down easy and beat it half to death. Then the adventurers showed up to finish it off.
The lord who controlled that area died fighting the wave. So those greedy soldiers thought lining their own pockets was more inportant then the safety of their country and attacked. It seems Raphtalia and her friend were rented. Idol blamed Raphtalia's screaming for Rifana's death. He was mostly mad this was a breach of contract. True was he just didn't take care of them or even feed them properly.
One of the reasons for Raphtalia's strong loyalty is the contrast between her two masters. Idol was rich, but didn't seem to spend anything on taking care of them and would abuse them for no reason. Naofumi was poor, barely had any money, but would insure Raphtalia was fed and healthy, giving her better gear then his own. At the time Naofumi's main source of income was the medicine he made, but he used a lot of it on her. He would also forgive her when she screwed up, wet the bed, or screamed in the night.
I'm super glad you did those two episodes in one go, it makes Raphtalia's backstory more thrilling

They changed a lot of what happened here in the anime as compared to what happened in the light novel. Naofumi and Raphtalia were more morally grey in their actions. The treatment the demi humans endured was worse in the light novel. Rifana died next to Raphtalia and she was still smiling because she didn't process it at first until the torturers told her so.
Love your reactions. Pleasantly surprised to see this double episode. Can't wait for episodes 16 and 17 to drop.
the thing about this anime is the call backs to stuff shown in earlier episodes that seemed like fluff and then makes sense later on (like the ball) makes it something that you could watch a second time and catch things that you missed before now making sense.

Slight change from the Light Novel and the manga: here Raphtalia decided that he wouldn't kill him, but in the original work he leaped right at him and slashed him, which caused the fall from the window.
Yeah the anime changed a lot to make Naofumi and his party more noble.

in the flashback where Raphtalia was fighting in her child form against the two headed dog beast, her parents told her about the shield hero and how its been well known among demi-humans that the (previous) shield hero had always treated the demi-humans well, so they always had a good image of the shield hero, meanwhile the royal kingdom had a negative image of the past shield hero.
So in the manga Naofumi doesnt stop raphtalia from trying to stab the pig, she cuts him then he attacks raphtalia where naofumi blocks his attack and she then stabs the pig leading him to fall out the window, honestly i kinda prefer that turn of events because Naofumi is way more understanding and the characters feel more in character

13:30-14:23 this is a change for the worse, compared to the manga, LN and WN. anime is the ONLY version where they say "revenge is bad", a very shitty and noticeable change that shouldn't exist.
They have to say the societally correct thing for all the "impressionable youths". Because it's bad when the government has to have the threat of an uprising when shit stops working. It's gotta always be "punishment with the system". That way people who control the system have much less chance of ever getting deserved punishment.

Aultcray has beef with the previous Shield Hero. Traditionally, the Shield Heroes tend to support and befriend demihumans, and there is a lot of human/demihuman problems in this world.
Ironically enough, Aultcray is creating the very enemy he hates, a Hero who is loved and supported by the race he hates. By preventing Naofumi from gaining human party members, he had no one to turn to but Raphtalia, a demihuman.
