  • A great day of herping, despite the minor hiccups, in a new region of Japan! We find two more beautiful Tiger Keelbacks, and our first Japanese Pit Viper!
    Side note: we finally reached enough species for the year I can no longer fit the list in the video description! Attached below is a Google Doc that I will keep updated going forwards.

      I just got back from Japan. I would have loved to go herping for giant salamanders, unfortunately my trip was extremely busy already. I did see turtles and frogs. But sadly no lizards nor snakes.

    You know, I absolutely love this channel and is my favorite herping channels, it has such a small uhhh hometown? Vibe to it if you can call it that, like you don't go on exotic ventures or anything, it's all just backyard stuff and I love it, ik this is kinda exotic but it's still backyard stuff, anyone in that neighborhood can walk that mountain, idk I just love something about it, yea people herping in the desert and like far off places where not just anyone can go, and idk if I'm forgetting a time where you did, but that'd be fine because both is fine it's just the backyard feel, feels so homey ig, I've been watching for awhile now

    A little late with this comment but I wanted to weigh in with a comment as a subscriber to the channel.
    I've been to Japan on three occassions for trips totalling about a year and a half in duration. I enjoyed your coverage of your recent trip there.
    I would highly encourage a return trip there as you barely scratched the surface of that amazing country. It is just so lush with so nuch biodiversity as you could see even in tiny little pockets in major cities. I'd encourage you to visit Shikoku, reasonably easy to get to but still remote and a stunning amount of flora and fauna. But there is really not a bad destination you could choose for making stunning videos of local herping.

    This Tiger keelback I saw in Viet Nam in the late '60's. Never knew what it was and had no idea it was venomous. Neurotoxic venom? Encountered a lot of other snakes many of them were found the hard way by the Marines I was with. Cool video.

    • @michaelnewell9662
      @michaelnewell9662 11 месяцев назад

      yeah, if you ignore the yellow ring, the color & pattern is very similar to a redsided garter

    • @willd639
      @willd639 11 месяцев назад

      @@michaelnewell9662 I assume your comment was meant to insult me which is fine. My point was, if a person from the US came across one of these in Japan I don’t think they would think “hey, there’s a venomous poisonous snake” because the head and body shape are similar to that of a garter snake which they may know are harmless. Also, garter snakes’ colors and patterns vary widely from location to location so you can’t even use color and pattern alone to determine what they are.

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  11 месяцев назад +1

      Neither were fantastic to be honest, but they weren’t bad either.
      7/11 spicy chicken is tasty, but not spicy.
      Samurai Mac was too rich, but not bad either. The roasted soy sauce dominates the flavor, it would probably be much better if applied a bit more conservatively.

    Keelbacks inflating the neck is warning behavior, like cobras or mambas hooding. It's advertising its toxicity, not "flexing the poison gland".
    Otherwise cool to see snakes not normally seen on herping videos.

    • @NKFherping
      @NKFherping  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, except that isn’t at all the behavior I was referencing. It’s the neck arching behavior where the nose is pointed into the ground, with the neck bent at an uncomfortable angle to present the exact location of the poison glands to a would-be predator. It isn’t a coincidence that cobras and mambas *don’t* do that, but the snake that stores sequestered toxins in the neck does.

    • @calrob300
      @calrob300 11 месяцев назад

      @@NKFherping Right. That's a warning behavior. I realize cobras and mambas don't do this exact thing. But i said like, as in similar, as they are all using the neck to convey a message. I thought flexing, as you said, wasn't quite making the point. However, your explanation above is much clearer.
