Every person that played the original game wanted to hear about the backstories of the characters. That is a main part of the "story" of Final Fantasy Rebirth. Most games have the same gameplay mechanic for 50 hours, but Rebirth mixes it up and gives lots of other mechanics. I found the stuff that you said was fun (like the tower quests) were the boring part. Discovering new areas, chasing Sephiroth via the robed men, learning more about Cloud (and his relationships with others), and the quick minigames that were encountered that you view as a 'waste of time' were the best parts to me. For example, in the original game, the ship simply took you from one place to another. In this, you enter into a QB tournament. Plus, QB has its own type of story to go along with it if you wanted to do that after the tournament. Almost all of the minigames are optional, and the required ones are there simply to give the player a 'taste' of the different minigames. However, SE said they will not have so many required minigames in the next part because you were not the only person to complain about them.

I wouldn’t have minded them exploring backstories but it felt like it came at the expense of any meaningful main story progress. In my 92 hours of play, I’d struggle to come up with much that actually happened in the entire game.
And the backstories weren’t all that interesting to me either so I’m not sure why they bothered. Exploring the past of a character I just met 2 minutes ago, carried no weight or emotion for me.
I still have more clips of my experience coming, but yeah, overall, this game missed huge for me. Loved Remake, didn’t like Rebirth at all. The actual game is fun, it just had no central story motivation for the 92 hours I put in. Loved QB.

This is the issue of ff7, not just the remakes. The plot lost focus once you left midgar
