If you want a more upbeat and poppy Taylor, try Midnights or Lover. Lover is the album immediately after Reputation, when she was moving on from that darker/angrier time of her life. Midnights comes two albums after Lover, and it’s a reflection upon sleepless nights she’s had throughout her life. They still have great lyrics, but definitely a different tempo. Both albums do have songs with heavy/intense concepts, but they’re not nearly as slow or folksy as Folklore and Evermore, so they’re easier to consume. Btw, Evermore is the sister album to Folklore, so production/vibe is very similar. Taylor said she “never stopped writing”, so she released both albums in 2020. It’s always fun watching people get to know her discography. Thanks for giving Taylor a listen, and an enjoyable reaction! 🫶
Since no one has explained yet, cardigan, august and betty involve the same fictional characters and are connected. cardigan is from Betty's POV, talking about looking back on the teenage relationship with James. August is from the other woman's POV, knowing she can't keep James but loving him anyway. and betty is from James' POV, regretting his summer fling with Augustine and wanting Betty back. the last great American dynasty is the story of Rebekah Harkness, the woman who owned the house Taylor now owns in Rhode Island and making parallels between them and how they're perceived by the establishment and media.
Love you exploring more Taylor. She dropped Folklore a few months in the pandemic lockdown by SURPRISE, we had NO idea, no promo or Easter eggs or warning and it perfectly captured the vibe, let’s go into our imaginary woods and escape this crappy reality. I highly recommend you do the Folklore Long Pond sessions with the commentary, it’s beautiful 🫶
You're onto something. The reason I can't comment my favorite album is becasue it depends on my mood or things I might be going through. I was late folklore but it is a beautiful album. It was too sad for me to listen to during the pandemic as I was one working in healthcare (epiphany I cannot listen to unless I am prepared to cry); I am relieved to see that the Cardigan/August/Betty love triangle has been explained below. I agree reacting to Long Pond Sessions would be good to understand the stories from the writers perspectives. I felt so bad for you getting stuck on "Betty"🤣
Just decided to pop through the door...😂 Keep doing what you're doing bro, these reactions get better and better the more time goes on❤ Glad this channel is picking up momentum now 💪🔥
Folklore is definitely slower than her other albums. She explains the writing process on Folklore Long Pond studio sessions, which im sure you could find some clips on RUclips. My fav albums of hers are Speak Now and Red! Genius lyrics have comments on the lyrics which helps me understand her writing, especially when listening to The Tortured Poets Department for the first few times. Also, she dated Harry Styles (im typing this while at that part of the video haha). Some of Red has been speculated to be about him but more of 1989 - especially style, out of the woods and her new vault tracks. She has a few misc songs which aren't appreciated as much because they're not a part of an album. I don't wanna live forever with Zayn is one of my favs, which would fit into reputation. You should react to the reputation tour or even the eras tour just to see all her eras. Folklore long pond studio is on disneny plus along with the eras tour but rep has been taken off netflix but there will definitely be videos on youtube!! I appreciate you listening to her music and being open minded to her discography :)
"this is me trying" is about depression, addiction. Trying not to chose the dark path, is somehow an act of trying. first verse, a person almost quit, finally came home to their partner. second verse, someone's lost in life, rather than getting drunk, they opens up to a stranger, an act of trying not to throw themself into alcohol. You can find the meaning of each song in her "folklore long pond studio sessions" where she plays the whole album live with minimal production. Its so good. folklore is mostly just madeup stories in her mind, how she sees things, her escape..
If you're looking for pop Taylor, then you should do Midnights next. Lover has a lot of pop too, light and bubble gum for the most part. The Tortured Poets Department has a lot of pop on it (esp the front half) but its also got slower stuff like folklore and evermore (more on the back half).
This album isn't as sad as you think it is. Most of the songs aren't breakup songs even though they may seem like it. Some of the time she is using metaphors. Mirrorball is like a disco ball. How they are made up of broken pieces put back together and show different things as they spin. She means we all have different sides we show to different people. The Last Great American Dynasty is about Taylor's house in Rhode Island. Rebecca who is the main character in the story married an oil barron decades ago. The house is in an "old" money very exclusive part of Rhode Island. Rebecca was wealthy on her own but not "old" money passed down through generations. They are generally raised better with more class. I am talking like over 100 years ago when parties aren't like we have now. Everything was fancy. Rebecca was divorced, a no no back then. The town hated her marrying a person "above" her. She was wild which is unacceptable. The house sat quite for 50 years, "old" people lived there. Taylor then bought the house. She is "new" money and a celebrity so not worthy of living there. Her neighbors were not happy about her moving there. They thought she was going to be having crazy, loud parties things like that. In reality she rarely stays there. She goes there for her annual July 4 party and invites her closest friends, around 10 people. The house is more of an investment.
I dont normally comment. But, i am enjoying your journey. You have No idea of how far you've already grown....❤ Keep learning. Enjoy the ride. Theres So Much more!🎉 The comments above have already clued you into the lore/history... its an adventure. 🐰
This and the akbum Evermore are folk albums. That is obviously not your taste. That's cool. We all have different tastes. It is good to try different genres to see if you might like it. You don't know unless you listen.
my tears ricochet is a song she wrote about having her masters stolen for her first 6 albums (taylor swift, fearless, speak now, red, 1989 and reputation) by scooter braun, this is why she re-records these albums and they are relabelled as Taylor’s Version. The lyric, “when you cant sleep at night, you’ll hear my stolen lullabies” refers to her stolen albums, so funnily enough it’s not about any relationships but rather losing all of her hard work.
@@HavenReactI was yelling at the screen because you were talking about someone breaking up with her, while the words “stolen lullabies” were still paused on the screen. This is not a sad song, this is a revenge song. Folklore is a song about folk songs; made up. That’s what she told us, but we believe that many songs do actually have a lot to do with the declining of her 5-6 year relationship with Joe. Cardigan, August and Betty is a made up love triangle. Each song is from one of their own perspectives. Cardigan is the main girlfriend, but after she’s been out of that high school relationship for a long time, August is the summer fling girl during a high school summer vacation and Betty is the guy’s perspective about his two girls and who he really loves (the girl from Cardigan- you said it THE ONE). It’s a great triangle that not many people pick up on. This is my favorite album because it’s not about her life, but of all of our lives. “Epiphany” is about her grandfather being in the war and the second verse is for the frontline nurses/doctors in hospitals going through the pandemic nightmare (as this album was made during the beginning of the pandemic). “Evermore” was also made during the pandemic and is the sister album to Folklore.
Sorry for such a long response. 🙈 PS - please keep going! You’re doing AMAZINGLY WELL. I really enjoy your content. If you do start a patreon, people who charge $0.99 or $1.00 get the most followers because we are ALL broke. People who charge $5-$20 have very few Patreon members. If it were me, I’d rather have quantity of happy people over unhappy superiority complex people who demand too much of you because they expect more from you for the cost. Just my unwanted two cents. Haha. Really, though. You’re getting there. Each album is showing you a different side of Taylor’s music. Not all is autobiographical. Blank Space is satirical based upon the media’s portrayal of her so she went with it and created a song and fabulous music video for their view of her. It’s so funny because it’s not her, but it’s how she is portrayed by the dumb media. Ok. Now I’m really done…. Again. 😂😜😂
I feel like this album might be too slow and lyrical for you. It sometimes will take a few listens to understand and appreciate it and to let it all soak in esp if it’s not what you’re used too
I think you should not listen to an entire album at one time. It would be more enjoyable for you to skip around. That way you get a mix of types of music, videos and live performances. @Haven Reacts
The entire Folklore Album is fictional. Really cool concept, stellar writing, some very pretty songs and yes, nowhere near as good as Reputation. If you know the full story behind Reputation it’s even better.
Love the reaction!! But this entire album is a fictional expect for my tears ricochet that song is about her art being stolen from her that’s why she’s re-recording all her work!!
Later on you'll come back to this and know that she was swirling (him) into all her poems...🤭. Harry doesn't label himself. He's basically just gender non-conforming and dates who he wants without any lables.
"fictional" is obviously a pretext for her life experiences disguised under "made-up" characters, we'll never know how much of it is true and isn't 🤷♂️
