You will Love the Brandywine Tomato's all of the heirloom tomatoes are great, so much more flavor. They may not look pretty (cracked and catfaced) but they taste great. Remember if you like them, save the seed, unlike the hybirds they are true to seed and you can grow them next year from this years seed. Great for off griders/homesteaders
In additional to the rabbit pellets, I add crushed egg shells to the hole when planting tomatoes to help with blossom end rot. With chickens and rabbits on site these amendments are free even if they do nothing.
i tried this method for first time. perhaps our holes weren't big enough because i found it difficult to get the hole dug without caving back in and hard to get it deep enough for plant. damaged my first plant. but i didn't give up! planted one seed in each hole for beans and peas also. excited to see if this no weed method works...my husband has doubts
I picked up a black brandywine tomato at Baker’s Creek on Monday too! I’ve grown the regular brandywine variety for quite a while and love the flavor! Of course mine will be in a pot this year since we are still waiting for our homestead here in SW Missouri!
I never had luck with Brandywine in kansas but here in NW Missouri, I had great tomatoes from one called Better Brandy, I believe. Big slicers and lots if them. Oddly, I've never had much luck with her star or celebrity. My favorite is an heirloom big slicer called Delicious. Try it for fresh eating.
San Marzanos are a great variety for sauces and pastes! I am growing those this year, and I did last year also. I started them in the house last week, and they will be going in the ground June 1st (Lord willing the fencing will be finished, otherwise, they'll be going in my pots). ☺ Thanks for sharing how you plant! I do basically the same thing, but since I don't have rabbits, I put some homemade compost in and on top of the hole. I also massage the root system to loosen it when I put the plant in.... In Dayton, Ohio, the normal "last frost" date is Mother's Day, but this year, the 10 day forecast looks good now, so I'm hardening off my plant starts, and preparing the newly expanded garden area as best I can, (given that April, and now May, have gotten crazy busy in my photo/video business.) I'll be using a similar method, with an overhead line, and strings to the ground, and I'm planning on three rows, so I'll be using the same 18" spacing you do. I've been hoping to get to a "famer's market," in my area to sell off "extra" starts, but haven't made it yet, mainly because the starts hadn't even been outside yet. With temps in the high 70s and low 80s the next few days... I'm hoping to change that, but it's hard to find spots outside in the shade... Thanks for your videos, it's always inspiring. (And often motivating, as well.)

I plant 23 in a 4 x 30 foot area myself grid pattern of two eight plant rows and one seven plant center row. ( Caged ) ALso it shocks the pant to remove the leaves just bury the leaves.

I am so far behind. Hoping tomatoes with in the next week. I have been dodging rain to plant beans, beets, carrots and others. Praying for a good harvest because it is what we live on all winter and summer. I have started some odd tomatoes this year because I need to get tomatoes with less acid so started a lot of orange tomatoes

Like to watch their progress ? I plant way deeper (dry summer normally)on the plant with mine all but top. But starting a plant half that size, been in the ground 2 weeks that size now with blooming starting, do yours have any sign of transplanting shock?

I did the single stem method right next to my cages and both method did well, I think the single stem had more tomatoes at the end of the season. I really don't think there is any reason to alternate sides because that field fence is strong and will hold a lot of weight. I did something similar with my pole beans and plan to grow cucumbers on the same structure (I used 3/4 electrical conduit as a frame with 2x4x60 wire). You could use concrete wire or cattle/hog panels or the fence wire with large openings.

I'm planning on using raised beds 30" high. I turned 70 today & have problems bending over for long periods of time because of my back. Would these panels work with this? I'm assuming the tomatoes grow on both sides. If my beds are 4' x 8', will I need one whole bed just for tomatoes?
1st year gardener. When i dig out a hole do i need to try to remove all the old roots from the soil before i put it back? Will thy just break down or do they grow into weeds?
Thanks for the video! Can I ask what you're going to do about weeds in the walkways between the weed cover? I'm thinking of using the weed fabric instead of chips, but live in a temperate rain forest area in the Pacific Northwest, and any ground not covered or planted becomes an instant weed garden. Is it not an issue there? And if not, won't the soil erode without some kind of covering? I've seen other places use mulch in the pathways. I though you would bring the soil up over the edge of the ground cover. How do you get the stems on your tomatoes to thicken up?

They are all indeterminate, but all tomaotes need support...in our opinion.

It's easier for the plant if you remove the other roots, but you don't have to go overboard. They will break down over time.

I think it would be great it they planted a cover crop of winter rye. It would stay short and green this year Until next spring.
