- April 2022: 11 years have gone by, and I now have a Patreon for my forthcoming orchestra composition, the Route 66 Suite. By subscribing to the Patreon, you can follow me as I travel up and down Route 66, see the videos, pictures, audio clips, information, etc. from the road and get updates of the composition, a sort of "behind the scenes" look at the piece as it is being created. www.patreon.com/route66suite
August 2011:
We drove from just west of Oatman, AZ to Springfield, MO on the Route 66. We took as many original alignments as we could, even early was 1926. This video contains pictures and video with historical information, and many references to the movie "Cars." Click "SHOW MORE" for timings to specific locations along the route. I hope it piques your interest in the "Mother Road."

Thanks for the ride.
Great video...Thanks. A buddy and I did ROUTE 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica in 2012...loved it....We had the most fun in Santa Rosa NM and Seligman Az....cool Motels, diners and BARS !
I haven't taken this trip yet, but after watching your video, the plan is to take an adventurous road trip like you have allowed us all to do in your travels.
Wow, that was interesting!!!!!!!!!!! A trip on old Route 66 is definately on my bucket list. Thanks for the great video and all the information!
my bucket list is route 66....:o) thanks for the awesom video!!! greeting from sweden
Excellent job boys!
I used to drink in the old bar in Glenrio. I worked on a ranch in Adrian, TX (dry). It simply had a small bar and a pool table. It would fill up with cowboys on Fri. and Sat. nights. No girls just cowboys. Beer flowed freely and fights were frequent. Occasionally bikers would pull in and it meant that it was time to leave.
Great video. Wish I could take a trip like this. This was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I love stuff like this.
Yea b Tj
Great video! Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with everyone!!! Love it!!!
I love this video! I love Route 66! I lived and worked in the U.S. for 12 years and been planning a great R66 road trip but never had the chance. Am back home in the Philippines now for good. Thanks for videos like this, somehow my dreams are realized. Thanks man!!!
This Video has got to be the best Route 66 video I've ever seen! It's been 48 years since I traveled Route 66 with my parents as a child. We left Los Angeles traveled to
Kansas City Kansas in the summer of 1965. Thanks for this Video! Great Memories!
I Loved this, thank you for taking us along..
Thanks for this wonderful! Greetings from Italy!!
Great video. Make some more road trips [smile]. Love the history and the look of the old buildings and signs.
That dog was faaaast!
I drove this rout several times in the 60s Wonderful memories! Thanks for this trip!
Great video! I love seeing so many familiar sights on here! I've lived in several cities along Route 66!
carly0525 Fun! Which cities, and which was your favorite?
What a good time with knowledge nuggets!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and as a result of which it's a must for my diminishing bucket list...
I would like to thank you guys for this video!!
Had to pause it right in the middle, to watch the movie "Cars" first.
I still didn't finish your video, but just finished watching the movie, and it was such a great experience!
Not because of the story itself, but because of what the movie means! Not many people will ever recognize the real message of the movie...
Such a great cast! Great to hear Paul Newman and George Carlin again!
I got many references, but probably missed a few. After finishing your video, I might watch the movie again...
One day I'll be visiting all of these places. And that's probably why I appreciated the movie so much. I already have an itinerary ready for the trip, so, most of these places were already marked.
Just finished your video. Really nice!! I'm going to download it and keep it here to watch again!
Oh, and the twin bridges are not "twins" anymore....
Amazing jobs. Thanks for doing an amazing video
My late husband and I traveled this years ago. I came out to California in 1960 with my family in a 1959 Chevy ...five girls and our mom and dad. A real long way from Flint , Michigan. Brings back memories ..Thank you.
I now live just blocks off route 66 FOOTHILL BLVD. RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA.
thanks for the kind remarks; I'm glad you've enjoyed it and that it brought back good memories.
Great video guy's thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
Enjoyed your video very much.
Great historical video
Thanks for memories - drove from western NY to Huntington Beach CA in 1971 with a pickup I bought at an auction and built a camper on the back. The Interstate wasn't done yet. Unfortunately you couldn't find a jackalope........
You did a great job. I've been up and down 66 a few times. You hit a lot of the high points and gave a good sense of the journey. I cannot the imagine the douches that downed this. That town square in Springfield, Mo. is where Wild Bill Hickok shot it out with Dave Tutt in one of the very few documented Old West High Noon gunfights
Excellent!!! Makes me want to make the trip myself. You also got a couple shots of some "rare" gas stations in Tucumcari NM at 10:20 and in Amarillo TX at 15:00.
Both were Phillips 66 Batwing style gas stations. I want to see Cars now.
Well, in 1992 I entered Rt66 near Oatman. It was the 66th Anniversary. It was June 6, I was going 66mph at 6:06 AM with my 6 yr old son. And I was 42 yrs old. (4+2=6) I had a 1959 Corvette. It was one lonely drive. Didn't see a soul. All the way to Seligman. It was Very green that year and Flies were Everywhere. It can never happen again. So, I got my kicks
TheHypnotstCollector 1959 adds up to 24, so divide that by 4 numbers and you come up with 6.
Robert Haarlem don't be stupid
And now you sit with the devil
Thank you. I’m a life long joplin resident. Great video.
One of the best Route 66 videos I have seen! I have done most of it twice in my 2001 Miata and can't wait to do it again.
This was a fun little road trip. Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed it. :)
This entire roadtrip is very well done. It had my full attention from the start to end. I wound up learning alot about the route 66 that people forgot about.
Kristina Kahila I'm glad you found it entertaining and informative. I hope it inspires you to do a road trip!
Thanks for sharing, that was neat.
Thanks for this video. I am driving Oklahoma City to San Rosa NM in a few weeks. Can't wait.
this was edited really well. Great job.
Great job
Awesome video, guys!
Great! I wish I could take a road trip like this on Rt 66.
this is just excellent, thanks so much guys!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
i have travelled from OK to NV on I-40 and it was one of the most amazing unforgettable trips in my life. and one day we will do that road trip again and this time its going to be from Canada to USA. I really enjoyed your video .. brought back good memories.. thank you
Thank you, and you're welcome. I would recommend taking the side roads instead of interstates such as I-40; you'll see much more!
yes i believe so.. hopefully next time when we can (we have too many pets at home to leave and take road trip) we plan to travel from Calgary (Alberta, Canada) to OK (thats where we used to live) and from there i need to cover much states as possible. We have taken road trips from OK to LO and OK to NY, OK to WY, UT and covered that section and then OK to LA. And many more but couldnt really explore so many states.. thats my next dream. One day. We usually try not to take highways which hides most of the mysterious stuff but some times no choice.. thank you so much for your advise. i hope you get to make more road trips and post them.
great video
We did this route (but going Westbound) back in 1997 and at that time, while interesting, we felt that we were about 20 years too late. Many closed places but when we stopped for gas or food or lodging, we found the people damn glad to see us. Some places we enjoyed more than others. Oatman was interesting and some trips to Vegas, we spend a day or 2 in Laughlin and drive over to Oatman to see the burro's and the old shops. The burros are really friendly (and pushy) if you have food for them.
Great video, especially with the references to the Cars movie.
Excellent video !
If I had the funds, I would go on the longest road trip ever! History rocks!
If we pool our funds....?.....I would definitely go...OK, you're right, I've been drinking. But damn, I would do it anyway, live on the cheap, set up some part-time gigs, maintain a good attitude, .....see America. Fuck, I have to go work tomorrow.
Great video, blew up the screen on my 15" computer and I felt like I was in the car with you.
I love your video
Well done gentlemen.
As a truck driver i remember reading the names of some of these small towns when running on the interstates that cross route 66. Educational
BRAVO !! I would like to Thank You gentlemen for a sensational job of video coverage!!
My wife & I have made that trip 29 times "Round Trip" from Cleveland to Phoenix, & I'm hoping to make it just ONE MORE TIME, so I can have an "even 30".....that's 60 times across the USA !! You've given me the motive to "keep up with my "Bucket List" !!
Keep up the Great Work guys !! "T.J." & Carol 3/26/'13
thanks for sharing . i lived in glendora ca where rte 66 was alosta ca.(there was a town called alosta that got gobbled up by glendora.). alosta is now called rte 66. got put out of business by the 210 freeway.
you guys are great!!!!im taking my 31 ford rat rod down 66 next spring and videoing the trip for my you tube channel,,,,rat rods, two lanes, and neon.
dlewis1931 please let me know when you post it!
One of my dream wishis to see that old history of route 66 and places greatings from the Netherlands Europe
Diana Herbst , Hallo Diana you should come over great country the VS I’m from Holland been here forever seems like. Coming back for a long visit to Holland in about 6 months.
Good video guys
Very interesting video!
Every time I drive Route 66 I swear that I feel like I was there back when it was the main Highway. I really like Seligman Az.
I was born/lived in Tulsa and we had family in Albuquerque. First trip I remember on 66 was when we had a 56 Chevy and NO A/C. Most of the time we would just meet in Amarillo. They had a nice little park where we would have a picnic, spend the day and then head back home. Fun times.
Cool video, it's look like late 80s and early 90s.....but it was in 2011, awesome.
Thanks. Nice show
The other little piece of trivia that I read about Glenrio was that like your said, the New Mexico side had the beer joint because the Texas side was "dry" but the Texas side had the gas station because New Mexico gas taxes were much higher than Texas.
Thanks guys, that was a lot of fun, educational too (kinda wished I'd gone along).
Educational ??????
Wow, Awesome!
I have REALLY enjoyed this video!! Hopefully, when my wife retires and we buy our first RV, I'm hoping we can trace your steps westward from some point!
I especially love the little bitty gas stations. We had one in my hometown, as well! It was a Sinclair station to my knowledge, and is still there. But, it's no longer a filling station, I believe the Chamber of Commerce or a Realtor uses it.
I am so glad you made me take all that video.
I'm inspired! I must try to do it in an older car though...... for example my '87 Corvette or our son's '78 Cordoba.
Thanks for posting.
David
That came up at some point - I think we were thinking either '65 thunderbird or a newer audi coupe.
Well done guys,, great job.we
makes ya just wanna go there- thanks, guys!
How could it make you want to go there. Travel to Europe and see some real culture...
You should have stopped in, Cuervo, NM, I did, an awesome ghost town to be seen there. My buddy and me, just got back from a trip from MO to Albuquerque, NM. Great video of the sights you captured here.
Awesome video I live in Oklahoma City and I been thinking of riding up route 66 and find the old back roads to see the dirt roads and stuff
Brings back memories of the old Route 66 TV show with the Corvettes. A knock off of Wagon Train.
Anybody remember the old Route 66 TV show?
When the deactivate the towns post offices the town becomes a ghost town. But this one is a classic ghost town building.
+Coyote Man Great show, and just watch a long weekend marathon of Rout 66 on COZI TV.
Some nice towns on the route, don’t look to be ghost towns. Great video, thanks for posting.
That statue on side of building in Amarillo is a Shriners Hospital for children icon. This one is rare because this is usually only done as a from rear view only. "No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child"
I'm a Route 66 FANATIC! I travel alone & have the best time. I've made many friends on the road. The real genuine folks that run the Mom & Pop places keep Route 66 alive & would love your patronage & the sharing of stories about the "Main Street Of America".
On facebook you can join several Route 66 groups who would be happy to share stories/photos/maps & can direct you to the best books to guide you along the "Mother Road".
Find me, Penny Black, on facebook. Look for me under a neon motel sign
Hey Penny, it's Nolan Stolz--we met at the conference a couple of months ago. The video you commented on 8 years ago was filmed in 2011--I can't believe it's been over 10 years!
I graduated HS in 1966 in the mid west.and my dream was to travel 66 to ca. I left the day after graduation. I always drive 66 when I go back. I live outside of Oatman now and when I First hit that winding road I was scared stiff.
Nicely done guys. Thank You
I am planning a Route 66 trip in June 2017
Your presentation was well done
While I was stationed at Fort Knox we found an old part of Route 66 on the base. It's in a range area that is rarely used. Was very neat. Also found some very old house foundations and a couple flattened model T's. Only found out it was a part of 66 due to a old sign from the 70's ish stating its significance.
Thanks so much for this video.. I would love to do this , although I dont have a clue if I will ever get to. Your video kinda made it a reality!
p
Route 66, if you can find it, is like a big museum
all building very classic every downtown city Americans,,cowboy towns,,love it,
Great Video!!! ;P
What a well-made video. I felt like I got to take the trip with you!
Too much of the 'Dude' word..............
awesome this movie, thanks...and funny trailer at 20:20 it was a old chevy blazer? haha .
You are great !!!
That road near Oatman looks like the scene at the beginning of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" where the car flies off the highway.
Noticed another cars thing, Next to Lizzy's shop is the tilting water tower of Texas!
From a historical perspective, you are going the wrong way. :)
I plan on taking a road trip from Michigan to Utah to visit my distributor this summer, and taking as much as 66 as I can for nostalgic reasons, (at least one way), so thank you for the load.
it's a strange assumption that people would only drive westward on the 66, but for decades the 66 was traveled by vacationers going both ways. also, there were plenty of people that started out west and moved east
Perhaps we should have driven in reverse going east?
Thank you for making this great educational video for everyone to enjoy. Some of us can just wish to travel and others make their dreams come true. Stay safe on the highways. Happy Trails to you and yours, I loved your pre 1950 stuff super to see. Sarah J.
One day I would like to go to these places, Route 66. Thanks.
9:00 Grandma's Fitness
32:32 My home town
A great piece of video....super color....this is very good historical footage.....don't destroy the original tape!!!!! from Larry
The stops at the local / town restaurants and diners must have been interesting ... that is when you get to connect the most with the locals.
We have the same descendant donkeys in Cripple Creek, CO.
Did you spring a leak?
Any restaurant named "EAT" 28:55 is sure to have good food. That's where you want to stop. Had one in my home town in the 60's and we called it the Eat Place.
that's my motto!
Yeah, me too. What a great trip that was!
Loved this video. I just finished my Epic Route 66 adventures. Y'all were vloggers before we knew what that was.
Thanks
What Kansas!! Cars reference and Wizard of Oz reference
Bellissimo!!
