To be clear: It;s not just tolerance that's required, but ACCEPTANCE. Its just another small step that permits true FREEDOM, for both those who are accepting and those who are accepted; the true state of "things". Be FREE !
Nice, would be nice to see this made into a full feature fill, showing how you met, how you were discovered to be gay and how coming out changed your life in high school!
My son made this film. I am very proud of him in ways too numerous to say. Besides the hope expressed in Living Lives, I see hope in the 11 : 1 ratio of Likes to Dislikes. Thank God! Happy New Year!
Oh gosh, I remember watching this when they first uploaded it and then I totally forgot about it until I just now found it again! Four years later and I still love this video as much as I did when I first saw it. Thanks so much guys for making my day twice
LUCKY! I came out at 16 (that'd be March of this year) as a junior to a freshman two years younger than me. He shattered my heart. :( We still talk, but he never even looks at me. Oh well, about two weeks later, I met a guy on a forum who is also in my state and today, we celebrated three months together. Honestly, I could not be happier.
Thank you, so many of you that take tireless efforts to expand awareness for so many individuals who have no resource or outlet for help. I am a Christian, that knows whether you are or not, God is smiling on all of you for the loving endeavors and the immeasurable people that you are helping. THANK YOU !!
ughhhh I'm dying!!! Good message, script is 7/10, acting and delivering dialogue 2/10, shots 7/10. I'm really trying to like it cause I like the way the shots are done and the sets, but the dialogue is KILLLINNNGGG me.
This is the cutest thing ever. Openly gay couples are some of the bravest people on this planet. When ever I see a pair of girls or guys holding hands on the street, I'm always so happy for them! they don't care what anyone thinks and its just so awesome to see!
This video was very well done, there were a few minor points where the camera work or script didn't quite seem to flow, but over all it was very professional. The message in the video is a great one, and both of them are incredibly brave for being so open. Hopefully one day people will stop caring about what someone else is into. I know from experience how hard it is and difficult to be with someone and not show affection because you are scared of what others will think and say.
I think this was very nicely made. I enjoyed watching it, and especially loved the ending, though I'm never a big fan of "everybody turns and looks" moments. However, I knew it was necessary and called-for, since it applied so much to a part of the plot. Good job, I think.
When watching films, I focus not only on the spoken lines, but the unspoken ones. While the spoken lines in this movie were rather rushed, the unspoken connection between the two boys was perfect. I especially noticed it at 3:30. On the one hand, we had the closeted boy throwing up his shields and trying to put a wall between himself and his boyfriend. But then there the openly gay boy was, trying his utmost to break through his shields. And by the end, he clearly was successful. Very well done!
I loved your video... its hard to go through school, be out and happy all the time and secretly there are the guys that want to love you but cant get over the fear of coming out... I am glad this had a happy ending *cries- good tears =D)
Nothing wrong with being your self. A bully will always be a bully until you stand up to him or her. Don't worry about what other say or think, just remember everyones entitled to an opion but, not when it comes to you. Unless you ask them directly. Thank you for sharing it with me. Michael
I'm a straight guy and this is not offensive. Good to see people being honest and being themselves whatever that means. It has no influence on me if someone is gay, or straight or bi. Good to see this clip!
Ah, I remember my high school (and middle school) days! So full of hate and discrimination. People say it's easier for females to come out, but I really don't know. As soon as people found out in 8th grade, it was hell for me. It's a really hard thing to do, but I'm glad more people are doing it. Hopefully as time goes on it will get easier.
Love this...I'm a straight woman and I think it's cool to be yourself whether that's gay or bi or striaight.....it's who you are that counts not who you sleep with.
This is so sweet, ^^ It could be so awesome if they made you little video into a whole movie, I really like the concept and the love they show for each other.
Excellent, very well done. To those of my Gay brothers & sisters who are still in the closet struggling to keep your real sexuality a secret, just remember that the truth will set you free. Also remember that once a story is told , it grows old very quickly something new and more exciting than your personal life will come along I assure you! Come out & set yourself free, just remember if you live your life with self respect and dignity & treat others as you wish to be treated all should be well!
this is a wonderful vid! its so true and honest!! ur very talented and will go far in the future! everything was well composed! some key points that the people who have commented below have failed to see! all they heard was "gay" which triggered "hate" in some of their minds and they promptly spewed that hate, without even thinking!
love is so important to people that they will risk their lives to be with the person they love... some people live in countries where homosexuality is punishable by death, but they still meet in secret. i think that's pretty amazing : )
That was great! It was simple, sweet, and you had a nice way of revealing their entire lives and situation in such a short time! My only suggestions are: 1. I know I'm being picky, but I think instead of calling it a film, you should really make the 'Short Film' clarification in the begging. 2. I'd try to find a way to shorten up the credits. It seemed like credits, a little but of film, then more credits. The credits seemed to overshadow your fantastic work. Film on! ~Hannah
It's good to know that no matter how walled off, ignorant, and homophobic some people (or some cultures) may be, little by little the Internet penetrates, younger more tolerant generations are born and mature, and reason and love will win out in the end.
I never had that problem but I know that there are people who do and my heart goes out to them. Eventually I hope that the issues with comming out will go away and no one will have to fear it anymore.
There is really not a point in arguing any of this over youtube...its not going to get anywhere. "haters" are going to continue hating and insulting while the non haters insult right back. It's really just a waste of time, this comment box should be filled with people prasing this boy for his talent wether its about gays or not. So Nate Orloff awesome job, continue doing such awesome work! Im sure you will go far :)
As a person who has been a non-teenager for ten years now, I would give the following advise- Over the period of time that I was in school, grammar through highschool, through to about 2000, I noticed the attitudes towards homosexuality among young people become more understanding and accepting. Surely, it is more understanding now. Your sexual orientation is part of who you are, and nobody else's opinions should matter. Be yourself. If someone doesn't like it, they are not your friend.
I'm a gay kenyan american (was hard for my family because I'm the only son) but at least I'm honest on who I am. I really feel sorry for all the gay- bi married men who continue to lie to themselves. I'm so blessed to live so free.LONG LIVE THE US. Godly is love.
very good clip! I see this all the time.. heck i even had a bf that didnt' want to come out of the closet just because he thought all his friends would leave him but once he did they stuck with him and their friendship was a lot better. I turned my highschool around.. i started a support group for everyone that was bi, curious, gay lesbian or even straight ect. and my school was better off.and everyone started being themselves no matter what everyone thougth.. and thats how it should be.
I would have added one line to the script. After the "out" guy says, "I can't live like this. I'd rather live alone," the closeted boy could have added, "I won't live alone," and as they walk out, he looks at the other students, he grasps his friend's hand and finishes, "I'd rather live like this." Otherwise, precisely the fact that this is not Jake and Heath doing a polished bit of Hollywood acting (as moving as that was) makes this short film believable.
Your short film generates a lot of discussion related to the theme of homosexuality, which is good! I guess a good film should do that. They're probably already been mentioned, but some suggestions anyway: -the dream the guy has in the beginning where he's running, incorporate more visual effects so it looks more like a dream -the dialogue is a bit cheesy, like right out of some teen show I like how the ending has you guessing the other people's reactions. organically build up your films!
this is probably my favorite RUclips video. i have watched it so many times! i have been in that situation before, and i did come out of the closet for him :)
I liked the guy in the black brooklyn shirt. It's always nice to see masculine gays as opposed to some of the ones who you could definitely tell without them telling you (Okay, he was an actor, but still).
It's not easy for everybody to come out. Some people have a lot to lose. I, for one, believe that family is more important since relationships tend to come and go. So I'd never risk ditching my family to be with somebody who could throw me out the next morning. You could also squander a chance for a good inheritance. Gays should respect those who are closeted. It's their choice, and they're probably doing it for a good reason. Selfish or selfless.
I've always thought sexuality was a personal issue - like, it's weird to yell "I'm gay," or "I'm straight," just introduce me to your boy/girlfriend and that's it. For me, there's no big deal about being interested in the same or opposite sex, as long as if you're involved, you're totally dedicated to that one person.
awesome little video ^-^ I hope most gay couples can have the courage to do what those two boys did in this video! Cause nothing is wrong about showing the world, who you truly love, gender doesn't matter!
11 years and still one of the most adorable things on the internet!

That was awesome! High schools are the most chock-full with hate and discrimination. Something needs to be done today for these kids..Brilliant film.
This was THE thing that helped me come out! Thank you SOOOOO much!
ughhhh I'm dying!!!

I'm really trying to like it cause I like the way the shots are done and the sets, but the dialogue is KILLLINNNGGG me.
Oh my god, that was so unbelievably sweet
....Awwwwwwww!!! And they lived happily ever after, with the additional thrill of
deriving the quadratic formula, one of my favorites of all time!
This is the cutest thing ever. Openly gay couples are some of the bravest people on this planet. When ever I see a pair of girls or guys holding hands on the street, I'm always so happy for them! they don't care what anyone thinks and its just so awesome to see!
Beautiful film! Absolutely one of the best short pieces I've seen in a long time! Keep up the great work Nate. Job well done.
That was truly inspired...the way the important point was made in just a matter of minutes. I really enjoyed this. Grammy

Great video, it is good to know the younger generation can come out without the retaliation that was done to those that were outted in the '60's.
Watched in 2008 and 2024. Love it but understand the fear of being out. Anyone else?
Nothing wrong with being your self. A bully will always be a bully until you stand up to him or her. Don't worry about what other say or think, just remember everyones entitled to an opion but, not when it comes to you. Unless you ask them directly. Thank you for sharing it with me. Michael
wonderful short movie, sums up what most are afraid of, publicity.
Thank you so much for posting such an amazing short movie :)
I'm a straight guy and this is not offensive. Good to see people being honest and being themselves whatever that means. It has no influence on me if someone is gay, or straight or bi. Good to see this clip!
I'm glad this video had a happy ending. It was very well done
Even after watching this so many times, it never stops being painful and wonderful, and beautiful!
I love it! keep making positive films! We need more filmmakers like you!!!!
That was great!
A very good dialogue and leads straight to the point : ]
I like your camera positionin as well : ]
Excellent movie. Would love to see what you could do if you did a full length feature with character development and such! Keep up the great work.
OMIGOSH! I love how they just kiss out of the blue at the end, that's amazing!!! So cute, and a very interesting and romantic way to come out ^-^
Ah, I remember my high school (and middle school) days! So full of hate and discrimination. People say it's easier for females to come out, but I really don't know. As soon as people found out in 8th grade, it was hell for me.

Excellent work. Wish RUclips was born in the 70's!
Love this...I'm a straight woman and I think it's cool to be yourself whether that's gay or bi or striaight.....it's who you are that counts not who you sleep with.
This is a well written sketch. If it were written by high schoolers then it is excellent. Then again, it would be excellent anyway.
that was so sweet. good for them not caring what people think.
This should totally be made into a full length movie!!
Well done. Great handling of a sensitive topic with limited time. Glad to see you are pursuing a career in film editing.
This is so sweet, ^^
It could be so awesome if they made you little video into a whole movie, I really like the concept and the love they show for each other.

some key points that the people who have commented below have failed to see! all they heard was "gay" which triggered "hate" in some of their minds and they promptly spewed that hate, without even thinking!
this is like the sweetest thing i've ever seen.
almost made me cry.
good acting too =)
We all need to respect eachother and let people be who they are. Acceptance!
Your video made me smile.
Someone very close to me went through the same thing.
I'm glad both situations turned out for the better. :)
"Friends who don't accept you for who you are were never your friends in the first place."-3

p.s this short film was amazing
that was such an awsome video! the ending was sweet and made the whole thing good.
It's good to know that no matter how walled off, ignorant, and homophobic some people (or some cultures) may be, little by little the Internet penetrates, younger more tolerant generations are born and mature, and reason and love will win out in the end.
Aww. :)
The dialogue was a little cheesy, but the ending made up for it. Loved it! :D
Wish I could do that at my school with my girlfriend! XD
TOTALLY ADORABLE-I LOVE IT! YOU GOT ME PROUD OF YOU! Thanks
I 'm impressed....I think you were/are very courageous! I never could have done that back in high school!
Cute Couple , Great short film
I never had that problem but I know that there are people who do and my heart goes out to them. Eventually I hope that the issues with comming out will go away and no one will have to fear it anymore.
That is so adorable, I loved the ending.
that was really cute. the ending made me smile. amazing message youre giving out here, 5/5 (:
wow that was so, so cute :3 I'm glad he found strength to be himself, pity it was so short but enjoyed watching it a lot xx
ok... the kiss at the end? hahaha that was funny. Just holding hands at the end and it would've been so much better.
Aww! this was adorable is there a longer version! I loved this!
There is really not a point in arguing any of this over youtube...its not going to get anywhere. "haters" are going to continue hating and insulting while the non haters insult right back. This is a really inspirational video on a really difficult topic. Well done. :)
x
Awhhhh, this is amazing.
i'm so glad you came out
i'm so attracted to you
like you dont even understand
Excellent short video; I wish this could be shown in schools to combat homophobia
Nate - so what happened next???? AARRGGHH! Very well done.
aww the holding hands made me smile too!!!!!
i friggin love the ending! it makes me smile :)
the blonde guy keeps looking like he wants to crack up,but other than that, great video:D
Well done. I'm glad someone is thinking about this kinda stuff
This is an amazingly inspirational video! I would give it multiple thumbs up if I could!
that was cute!! why is it soooo hard to come out? so scary to make that transition, but once its done, its like a breath of the freshest air
I'm a gay kenyan american (was hard for my family because I'm the only son) but at least I'm honest on who I am. I really feel sorry for all the gay- bi married men who continue to lie to themselves. I'm so blessed to live so free.LONG LIVE THE US. Godly is love.

Good for you Nate. That was a very nice short.
This is really good keep going Nate.
I love this vid!! It was kinda cheesy but it dealt with a huge problem in a cute way
Nate, dude! You and Andy are so freaking cute! What a sweet story.

short but complete story. great. great.
Aww. (:
The ending was cute, when they kissed. Good for them.
I wish I had that courage in high school. PIONEERS!
I liked the guy in the black brooklyn shirt. It's always nice to see masculine gays as opposed to some of the ones who you could definitely tell without them telling you (Okay, he was an actor, but still).
Nice and simple...typical situation most teens go through...life can be hard...I know...

what an awesome video :D acting was a little off sometimes but i still gasped at the end :D
I love it on the other hand I don’t like how they put the short in short film
That was excellent. Awesome work guys :-)
Hopefully, someday, people will stop being so closed minded, and actually accept people for who they are.
I've always thought sexuality was a personal issue - like, it's weird to yell "I'm gay," or "I'm straight," just introduce me to your boy/girlfriend and that's it. It doesn't matter if you're gay if they are true friends they will accept you no matter what.
Those two just look so cute together^^
the ending is SO DAMN CUTE!!!!!
