Monkey Shoulder is a great relaxing, approachable, easy dram that everyone from novice to geek can enjoy. It's not very complex, but it's a great quality whisky at an exceptional value. I especially enjoy it when I am relaxing with a fine cigar.

There simply is nothing bad to say about Monkey Shoulder. Classic introduction, at a store to buy some whisky, going to be a group of us, not all scotch drinkers, didn't want to spend a lot. Laugh at the name, buy a bottle, pour some for everyone and, BOOM, every single person instantly comments how good it is. Of course it's not complex or challenging, it's just damn good. I've got so many pricey, interesting bottles now and they're all great but that doesn't mean I can't still appreciate a good blend...and this is it!

I respect your score. This is a great blended malt and for the prices you mention, a must try . Thanks for sharing!

I found Monkey Shoulder to be rather plain when I first tried it... But then I was already into Ardbegs, Laphroaigs, and Glen Gariochs by that time... I see how it can be a good introduction to malt whisky just like a Glenfiddich 12.

Great entry dram. My (non whiskey) friend was sitting near me when I started playing this edition. She said "What the heck are you watching?" and as I explained she said "I don't I want to know how they came up with that name".....LMAO through the rest of this review. Wonderful review Alan. Cheers All!

Really never got on with Monkey Shoulder, I've never bought a bottle but had samples several times, not sure what it is but it just doesn't sing to me. I'm certainly not a whisky snob and always on the lookout for a good affordable whisky. A couple I did pick up are the Famous Grouse Port Cask finish, and Wine Cask finish, both really not bad for what they are, keep up the good work, cheers Kev

Exactly too the point Alan. It does what its supposed too do and does it good and at a good price. There's also a Smokey version of this kicking about, haven't had that and its more expensive than the normal monkey shoulder. Good review Alan. Cheers.

Yeah I mentioned it right at the end David believe it has Balvenie peat week in the mix to give the smoke... Cheers for engaging as usual fella... Got 2 kilkerran 16 today... Happy chappy...

Thanks for your great review Alan. There is a similar type of whisky that is heads and shoulders (excuse the pun) above Monkey Shoulder that does not have all the marketing, advertising and hype of Monkey Shoulder, and that is Naked Grouse. Makes Monkey Shoulder pale into insignificance, in my opinion of course. Not sure if you have been able to try it. Take care.

If I want easy sipping, why would I go Monkey Shoulder, have a whole selection of complex whiskies in the Irish side of the spectrum.

It's just a matter of opinion Clinton you could have them all... So much whisky... Thanks for dropping in...

I just can’t be bothered now with Monkey 🐒 Shoulder and Naked Grouse etc... I have 70 bottles of delicious single malts and to take up space with whisky that is simple and after a while “boring” I can’t see the attraction. I understand the gateway nature of this bottle, but as someone who is after experience it does little for me. Love your work Alan, but this one went through to the keeper 😉😉

Really appreciate your feedback Allouran but I am repeatedly getting requests for obtainable and affordable bottle for stages of the journey I mentioned at the start this one was not for everyone and also hope at the same time it would help the geek reminice the early days and was interested to find if anyone used this to introduce friends to whisky that was my thinking... Many thanks for dropping bye as usual my friend.. Don't fret plenty of good stuff still in the cabinet... Cheers Alan

@@thewhiskyfriend No problem Alan, it's like any group of collectors and drinkers in any category. To pitch for any one group (fellows like me I suppose), is fine but it is limiting and I recognise that. Ralfy's channel is one that has plateaued a bit because it does have a "smaller" range but he does have the capacity to "drag" people up to try new things - he has influenced a few of my purchases (as you have as well). Keep up the good work :)

Yea I think it’s pretty decent for the price I do like naked grouse better and it’s $3 cheaper so I don’t buy it very often!!
