  • Hi everyone, today I will take you through 3 layers of what makes your memorization process bulletproof - we talk about harmonic analysis, muscle memory, auditory memory and tips and tricks on all of those as well as some potential traps to avoid along the way. Memorization / Memorisation is a topic we all deal with on the piano, and I really believe that once a piece is memorised it does add a certain new level of knowledge to the piece. So therefore, we take a look at what I would describe as the most efficient techniques for memorisation of piano pieces or sheet music in general (Also applicable to other instruments, of course!)

Great video! Also another thing I'd like to add when memorising; look at the sheet music carefully and make sure you don't practice mistakes, because they're much harder to fix later on.

You're totally right, and I've been there before 🤣

Very well said! In just 8 minutes I heard my game plan of memorization! I will try every single one of them (giving the weight on the one I choose and using other 2 as a supportive method.) My ideal memorization plan was the third one with 1st ones 'stage' like seperating.
There is one thing I was expecting you to mention and that is "What should appear in our head when we play a piece by heart?" Is it an image of the sheet music or is it chords in our head? Or maybe it is the singing melody of right hand on paper while we sing. I mean, I also understand you can't say a specific thing because it may differ from person to person.
Helpful video as always. This one will decide my fate of memorization! Thanks for the videooo!!!

Thanks for the video!! I'll try it, anyway is too hard for me memorizing, I hope I can 🙏. Greetings from Argentina.😊

And how do I memorize Ligeti Etudes harmonically?

As explained in the video, harmonic analysis applies to tonal music especially classical and romantic. For Ligetis etudes there are several great thesis and doctorate works you can read that break down the patterns that Ligeti uses. It's totally possible to play etudes by memory this way. For example when I learned Desordre I of course didn't harmonically analyse the piece , except there's a direction and key notes it moves towards. But the pattern is most prominent here, specifically the combinations of Octaves + N-notes followed by another Octave followed by another set of N-notes. In the end its memorising patterns + key notes and moments + mechanical practice and a bit auditive too, totally doable (I've done so myself)

@@PianoTechSupport thanks so much! I think that also applies to Fèm for sure. Since the pattern kinda repeats.

Yes exactly@@nilskroehl as long as there is a pattern there is a way, so Id like to say. And even if there wasnt a pattern, say it was completely random generated music by using atmospheric pressure or who knows what, memorising a sequence of 1000 or even 5000 truly "random" digits, notes or otherwise is a feature many have done without problems; for example memorisation of Pi sequences or eulers number. Luckily Ligeti etudes are nowhere near that random and there are always patterns or similar things going on. But this is all in all a very complicated topic not reflected in the video.
