James Taylor had no idea the impact his music had had on Brazilians, and it was this experience that reinvigorated his career and inspiration, by his own acknowledgement. George Benson was supposed to be the headliner on both of the nights they played, with JT opening for him, but Taylor's rapturous reception the first evening caused his set to go much longer than scheduled. Benson, a great admirer of Taylor and a true gentleman beside, ceded the headline spot to James Taylor for their second night. The amazing thing is to see how much Taylor's music has influenced subsequent Brazilian singer/songwriters, such as Ivan Linns, Djavan and many others. It truly was a second cross-pollination on the same order as that between Stan Getz and Tom Jobim twenty years earlier. Perhaps this is one of the factors contributing to the amazing vibrancy of Brazilian pop music in the thirty years since this landmark concert.
I had the privilege to be there and listen to James singing to me in 1985. I was so close to the stage that I was able to see his surprise witnessing how many people loved him in our Brazil. In his song " only a dream in Rio " the lyrics mentions a special night and I thing he was talking about the night they made this video. It was really special. My Dad was struggling with depression in a period of time when nobody had much information about it and he ended up killing himself in 1987. That concert helped me relax for at least one night not making me think too much about the problem I was living with Dad. I heard later that the Rock in Rio of 1985 was very special for James Taylor too and in different ways. This show will always be in my memory as the night where over 250,000 people were seating on the dirt just listening to Mr. James Taylor fill our hearts with joy, piece and hope. Meu pai tinha o disco desse show lançada pela Som Livre que saiu no ano seguinte! James Taylor realmente renasceu de novo nesse show histórico, pois ele estava no fundo do poço, separou da Carly Simon, se fundou nas drogas enfim, mas aí Roberto Medina convidou pra estar tocando no festival e o público de 100.000 pessoas cantaram com ele em "You've Got A Friend", ele saiu no palco emocionado!
