Thankyou for sharing this information with us
Great series man! I'm almost done with cs50 and have been prolonging starting OSSU for quite some time. Seeing your progress has motivated me to finally start OSSU. Keep making the videos and good luck!
Thanks! Well done for almost completeing CS50! It really is quite a dense course and not as easy as you'd think. I'll definitely keep providing updates on OSSU. Good luck with OSSU, and keep us posted!
What a great idea. I’m trying to start my own journey on shifting careers from engineering which I took on college. Seeing your plan on how to do it really motivates me to push through as well. Good luck on our journey and I hope we see each other along the way or at the end of it!
Thanks! Good luck on your learning journey as well!
Nice video man continiue and thanks for the high quality of the video
Thanks, will do!
Awesome video, I'm currently a Civil Engineering student at a university and I've been interested in programming for years now and been trying to pick it up as a sort of extra skillset. Your video helps a lot.
Great to hear they help! Good luck with your CS journey!
i was searching for open source courses , i got to know about OSSU . i will start to learn from today .
Great to hear! I really do believe this is a good option for self taught CS.
i am with you starting from today . ( i will leave a comment in each week vid you will make )
I hope you were able to stick with it, even in my absence.
Thanks from India 😊
Dude 😭 this ossu course sounds amazing
I’m from South Africa 🇿🇦 and I’m building my roadmap on becoming a cloud ☁️ engineer and this would really give me a competitive advantage since South Africa 🇿🇦 is slightly behind in the tech space.
Literally stumbled on gem 💎 thanks 🙏🏽 for the information man 🫰🏻
Wow, thats great to hear that a fellow South African has found this usefull! Good luck with your studies!
Hi , I'm also planning on learning Computer science. I.T. has peak my interests and would like to pursue a career in this field . Thank you for creating this type of content for people like myself .I find that all if not most of these genre of videos are from people from across boarder and its amazing to find someone from South Africa . I plan on doing OSSU next year and doing some researching from people from the in the I.T field on understanding some concepts alittle bit better if I should get stuck or don't grasp it that well .
Hi my fellow South African, good luck on your journey!
I think you're incredible
I'm already started OSSU, but this video made me aware of the importance of the course and it really did motivated me to dedecate more time for it
Thats fantastic! Hope you are progressing well!
Hi Ruan, Great job !
You have expressed the fact that you study 30 hours per week, which is an incredible mileage. Congrats!
I have my eye on OSSU and am interested to give it a try. I hold master degrees in an totally unrelated disciplines. For some time I have been a self-thought student in web development. I am nevertheless interested to start a journey with OSSU in the near future for the purpose of increasing my horizons and depth in computer science.
One thing I am hesitant about is when I read on OSSU that the course takes 2 years at a rate of 20 hours/week I am not sure what to think about it. I understand that you are in your 9th week and perhaps you could share with me some of your thoughts and ideas.
Prerecorded software courses (the ones I have been studying) are normally super packed with information. For example in the last few months I have been studying advanced online courses in Nodejs (video recording of 34 hours) and earlier on in depth Vanilla Javascript (~100 hours). What I realized was that my retention was much better if I took my own notes (due to incredible amount of details) which in turn increases the amount of learning time spent by at least a magnitude of 3. After taking a large course I also noted that I was compelled to repeat the subject matter to reinforce what i have just learnt and there was still more time necessary to properly complete the study.
What I am trying to arrive at is that on large video courses I have to reserve 3-4 times more time (above the video recorded time) to fully master the course. The longer the length of the course the more time I have to spent on taking notes and on repetition.
Have you experienced this problem and if so what has been your approach ? Perhaps you are a prior student of computer science prior to embarking on OSSU, which in all fairness would explain why you are able to progress so rapidly?
Just very curious to know how you achieve this? Would love to learn from you how you achieve such speed in learning.
Hi Annis, thanks!
First, I do not claim to retain 100% of the information learnt from these courses. Hopefully, I retain enough that I can at least recall where to find the potential solutions to future problems I face. From my experience as a Mechanical engineer, I’ve learnt that this is pretty much how things go in the industry, at least until you become specialised in a specific field and can recall more of what you need on a daily basis without having to go back to the notes etc.
Regarding taking 3-4 times longer. So far, that has been my experience as well. For most of these courses, for each hour spent watching lecture videos, the problem sets would keep me occupied for approximately 3. So I believe I’m getting in the reps, so to speak, with actually applying the principles taught in the lectures. I believe this will result in better long-term retention, at least to the degree specified above.
I’ve dabbled in programming a little over the years. However, I wouldn’t say that has given me any real advantage. It might have done the opposite since I accumulated a few bad habits!
It might seem like I’m progressing very rapidly (and maybe I am), but keep in mind the courses thus far have been relatively short. Nothing even approaches 100 hours!
If you decide to give OSSU a try, then I wish you all the success! Good luck!!
Solid video, mate. I'm just finished with my exams and specifically looking for this program to start. It's been in my mind for a while. This video of yours actually had give me a nice really starting point. Thanks a lot.
Thanks! Happy to hear my video was helpful!
I think CS50X when i solved psets i find some diffcult i am stuck
What is the difference between it and UoPeople and which is the best?
Hey I really enjoyed this and will be following how you get on. I am already a software engineer but I don't have a CS degree and feel that it is limiting my understanding and the work I produce, so started the OSSU last week to see if it can help. Currently, on week 4 of CS50 and damn it is kicking my butt! Also been revising some maths as it's been a good number of years since I had to do any algebra or even think of it.
Hi! Good luck with your CS journey. CS50 was an excellent course, but you'll probably find some of the Core Programming courses in OSSU a little too easy. Keep it up, though. Knowing what an already practising Software Engineer thinks about these courses would be interesting.
Hi Angelina
lets do it together man
Will start from next month currently busy taking exams.
All the best
Im in the second course and i hope to keep my self on the truck hopefuly...
Thats great! Keep it up.

Hello Ruan, I hope you are well. I found your video becouse since a few months ago I knew OSSU university, I've been studying programing for many years. My case it's, i'm actually civil engineer, I like my carrear, but it isn't my passion. Many years ago I discovered that my passion is computers science, so I'm trying to go ahead to persuit my dream of to be a computer scientis teaching my self. Sometimes is hard, becouse actually I'm 33 years old and many times I ask me about if this it's good for me.
Sorry for my long introduction, the question is, I've founding many pages about OSSU, and I don't know if they are the same program. Do you know anything about it?
So sorry for my bad english, I'm spanish speaker (learning english at the same time of CS haha)
Grettings from Chile, South America!
Hi Christian. Thanks for the comment! I've also noticed that there are various OSSU sites. I'm not sure how up to date they are, at some point they were probably all the same, however that is probably not the case anymore. The community on GitHub is actively updating and improving the course, with the latest update being only 3 days ago. I believe the aim form the start was to meet the CS2013 curriculum guidelines, so in the end no matter which version you complete, it will still be legitimate. Ultimately, I personally would recommend that you follow the course as per the GitHub page.
Hope this helps!
Greetings from South Africa!
Hi Ruan...This is Anju from India .I am 43 yrs old and eager to learn computer science. Is it fine to get degree at this age and probably find a job? Kindly reply
Attending university generally provides two valuable assets: 1) Education, and 2) Certification that you demonstrated some level of competence.
How does OSSU address item 2), which is traditionally necessary for attaining employment?
You can get certificates of course completion. It's really not a great idea to get into OSSU to get a job. Better to attend to university for a degree in CS. OSSU is great for Entrepreneurs or Solopreneurs
I still have 3 years before getting my master degree in business ✨ on this time I want to focus in both cs and business cuz I like both of them
I don't know if it's a good idea or not
But I would never know if I don't try it 😜 It's gonna be fun
I like this plan, I think I'm gonna follow it too
Very ambitious! Hope its going well!
Currently in 3rd course, wish you all the best ❤️
thank you bro... you too
Greetings! Hello brothers please guide me that OSSU is free platform or we give some money for getting degree? I am very confused that what would be better for me to get degree or learn by myself.
OSSU doesn't provide a degree, however some of the courses contained in OSSU might provide completion certificates, some free, some paid.
I am gonna do a Btech in CSE (cs degree) in offline should I do ossu in parallel?
Hard to say... I guess it would depend on many factors. For one though, don't try and take on too much all at once. Higher education, in my opinion, is a marathon and not a sprint. Perhaps you can use OSSU to supplement your BTech. So if there are specific courses not included in your degree, or if you feel the content of a particular course is lacking, then you can take only those OSSU courses. That is what I would try. Good luck!
@@ruan_cs7064 Thx for the reply. Keep growing :)
I am also trying OSSU I am starting with highschool math I hope to become a vulnerability researcher and work at hackerONE
That's great! Best of luck with all the studies. Let me know how it goes!
Ruan, what is your university degree in? You mentioned that you've gone to uni before.
I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering
@@ruan_cs7064 how has your switch been going? i am mechanical as well but i have found the work to be unfulfilling
Is there any artificial intelligence and data science degree like this in online mode for 2 years for free ???
Good question. I've not come accross anything that is similar, only shorter courses on Edx, coursera etc., which are allready quite good. Hopefully someone else can help out!
Great introduction.
How are you able to dedicate 30 hours per week?
Are you dedicating a portion of your weekends?
Are you only working part time?
Looking forward to following your progress.
Thanks a lot. As for your questions. I have some flexibility during the day, so typically can do 1-2 hours at work. However, most of the studying happens in the evenings, where I spend 2-3 hours. You'll notice on some of the weekly feedback videos that I do struggle to meet these targets, but I get close at least. As for the weekend, yes, I typically spend about 10 hours over the weekend to get to 30. I must admit, getting 30 hours in on top of working is not easy, but it is possible.
Should I do this or do a bootcamp that will cost me 15k ?
I would personally do the free, or near free option first.
Do you actually get a degree/certification after completion?
If you choose to pay for the semerate courses on Edx etc., then you can get a certificate for them.
Mee nether good luck
Man WHERE ARE YOU!?
I'm here, been a while. Will give an update soon!
@@ruan_cs7064 YOOO ❤️🥹 ls gooo
Is OSSU better than teachyourselfcs?
Hmm...Good question. I haven't heard of teachyourselfcs. From what I can see, OSSU is certainly more structured and could have a bigger community?
You reqlly need math
A real degree?
Not quite, but real knowledge gained and real projects completed. Must be worth something right?
