Belly dance started from ancient Greece in Peloponnese with the name" kordax". Women used to perform this type of dance to the godess of hunting Artemis so they could have healthy babies. Aristotle the comedian made thus dance known to middle east through his comedies. Arabian nations used this type of dance to their music and culture. And bouzouki is the persian word for the ancient greek instrument that was called in ancient Greece "pandoura".
Stop spreading fake news, belly dance was incorporated in our culture from the arabs and the Turks, stop trying to connect everything to ancient Greeks
kalchrr Go and search to wikipedia about belly dance/tsiftetel and see that it has greek origin! Greek people always dance tsiftetel in happenings..don't speak without knowing
Raf. F I am sorry to disappoint you, but even Wikipedia which is inaccurate as everyone can write whatever he wants, it says clearly that tsifteteli is originated from Turkey and Arabs, and no part of Greece from Crete to trace and from chios to zakynthos was aware of tsifteteli existence before 1932. Even the foollest tourkosporoi in Greece know that it's not native If Wikipedia didn't say such, I could cite you papyrus Larose brittanica were what I am saying is made clear, tourkospore. There is nothing in common with Arabic/Turkish dances and Greek tradition, and especially belly dance which is danced only by tourkospores. Do you think that your great grandpas from kalamata or from paros were dancing tsifteteli? If yes then you have no idea about the history of your own country
kalchrr I respect your opinion..Of course tsiftetel probably comes from Arabs but I try to explain you that there was an almost same dance in ancient Greece which was used in comedies of Aristophanes etc. According to this Alexandros the great spread this dance among other cultural creations/ things in his empire (middle east) Also there is an opinion that supports that tsiftetel also was developed in asia minor before Turks come by Greeks that lived there! After turks came, persian, turk arab and greek culture were mixed..after greek left anatolia brought back the dance! Thanks for the conservation my friend..Peace
Raf. F I don't have opinion, just post what I read. According to papyrus there was no such a dance common in the Greek world, either we talk about ancient Greece, or about byzantium. It was a dance that inner anatolian Greeks (some were not even Greek, see cappadocians etc) took it from turks, and turks from Arabs. Some desperate tourkosporoi tried to associate it with kodrax, but the discovery of its scale and more pots depicting it destroyed their desires, as like all ancient dances it had nothing in common with anything in near east. Worth mentioning that metaxas prohibited tourkosporoi to dance it only 10 years after bringing it here It's just a shame for Greeks to celebrate inferior culture from the near east and turkey, especially in 2018
am, Greek i love tsiftetelia but can we also have some Turkish tsiftetelia too as Turkish girls dance like angels from heaven i love both Greek n Turkish tsiftetelia
there are no "Greek tsiftetelia", Tsifteteli is a turkish dance that was completely unknown to Greek society before 60's. It's a shame to put the word Greek and tsifteteli in the same phrase
