Watching this video brings to mind an occasion many many years ago when, as an apprentice engineer, I was placed under the guidance of one of the senior staff members by the name of George, who happened to an avid Wolves fan with a particular dislike of Manchester United, and with whom I would often discuss football and his recollections of matches from days gone by.
On the day in question I asked him if he had even seen Duncan Edwards play. "I certainly did" he replied. "And, in your opinion, just how good was he, George", I asked. Given his dislike of Manchester United, I reasoned that his view would hardly be one seen through rose tinted glasses. George momentarily lifted his gaze skywards, as if seeking inspiration for the appropriate words. He then lowered his gaze and looked me straight in the eye and asked:..."Did you ever see Pele play, son?"...."Yes George, I did"....George finished the conversation with the following two words:....."Forget Pele".

My late Father used to tell me as a boy just how good Edwards was, he used to say that it was difficult to explain just how good he was and my Dad knew his football. I remember watching Bryan Robson play for united and he was really on top of his game and i asked my Dad how they compared, my Dad replied that Robson was a really good player but that Edwards was on a completely different level entirely and as i knew that my Dad thought Robson was a good player his answer went some way to explaining just how good Edwards was .

Before my time but all the compliments and talk about him, is so consistent that the man definitely meets the myth/legend.

He was able to play against Di Stefano in 1956/57, theheavyroller had rare footage of it on here. The video "Duncan Edwards playing for Manchester United and England" has some of the footage with him tackling Di Stefano.
I don't think he ever played against Puskas though.

If Jimmy Armfield and been fit and Maurice Norman had not broken his leg a year before the World Cup in 1966, the England defensive unit would have been Banks, Armfield, Norman, Moore, Wilson, Edwards. Every single player world class. Possibly by then you could have left Stiles (who was an amazing number 4 himself) in and put Edwards in the Charlton's role and replaced Peters with Charlton on the left. What a side that would have been! RIP Duncan, you deserved a better fate.

Tavy@ when i see duncan edwards play like george best i would rate him up there with best, maradona, pele, eusebio, beckenbauer....and so many more. But tbh i just havent saw him do half of what george did at age 21. George had won the european cup at age 21. So why has no player ever rated duncan with pele, best, puskas, di stefano, gento, eusebio, beckenbauer. Never never and he played at the same time as them, except george best. When people die young there always the greatest at what they did. Like singers, actors, sportsmen, its all alot of shit. Pat crerand who played for man utd from 1962 to 1971. Said a good line, he said "if there not good enough to get a mention when there alive then there not good enough when there dead. A mean just becouse some one dies then all of a sudden there that good, there this great, no am sorry but how can some one just become the greatest ever just becouse they die and we all know its just not true" paddy was right but. He said "the grave yards are full of the greatest players ever seen, well that week any way" i know right now beckanbauer was much better than duncan. He could slow the game down to actually take a break and sit down lol a thot he was as good as any one except best and maradona. There the only two, he was as good as pele becouse he could do what pele could do, but not best or diego, they had more than the lot, they were entertainers, showmen on a stage.

Tony Kay, Sir Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Wilf McGuinness just a few players that rate him the best they ever saw. This was a special player, I can show you things said when he was alive. Also some fans of other clubs rate him with players like Pele & Best. At 21 Edwards had won 2 league titles like Best, I'll send you things I have saved from when he was playing. What if Best had died at 21? You wouldn't believe his hype?

"In the Manchester Evening Chronicle Football Pink the following Saturday the United correspondent, Alf Clarke, was quick to sing Duncan’s praises in his regular column.
He began by repeating his prophesy that Duncan was certain to be England’s future captain, and he continued with the following; “The chief problem is where to play him.
He is a brilliant wing half back, can also adapt himself to centre half back, and now both Manchester United and England realizes his potential in attack.
That is where I think that he should be played.
That is why United did so well at Huddersfield last weekend, and why the Under 23’s won so handsomely at Clyde.
We cannot escape from the fact that Duncan Edwards is the greatest young player of his age.
I know we have had our Bastins, Carters, Dohertys and others, but I rank Edwards as the best young player I have ever seen.”
"Combine the ability of Eric Cantona, and the strength and application of Roy Keane, with the Distribution of Glen Hoddle and the temperament of Paul Scholes, and you are somewhere near to the sort of player Duncan Edwards was.
Younger readers may well think that to be somewhat of an exaggeration, but, believe me, Duncan Edwards was that good."

      Ridiculous. Sir Bobby doesn't count?
Duncan was the best player in a team that stuffed Garrincha's Brazil 4-2.
In 1958 Pele's Brazil couldn't beat England after Munich let alone before. He would have won 3 world cups.
Forget Man U, look at England's results in 1956-1958. People talk Pele about his international career, not his club. Duncan was the best player in a better side than Pele.
Maybe ask the Germans who called him 'boom boom' and the newspaper headline stating he's 'the greatest player to ever have set foot in their country'.
He was our best centre half, left half and scored a hat-trick for England as centre forward. The others you mention couldn't tackle. Edwards did it all.

Never read so much crap in one post.
He’d won two league titles by the time he was 21 and they were in the semi final of the European Cup when the crash happened, every chance he could also have had a winners medal at 21 if he lived.
He never played at the same time as most of those players you mentioned why should he play like George Best? He was a completely different footballer, he could do it all and play in every position.
When Bobby Charlton who’s not prone to exaggerated statements says he’s the best player he ever played with then I listen.
      I suspect you’re a bitter Celt.
