- On April 21, 1913, 13 year old Mary Phagan was temporally laid off due to a materials shortage at the national pencil factory in Atlanta, Ga. Around noon on April 26, she went to the factory to claim her pay. The next day, shortly before 3:00 a.m., the factory's night watchman, Newt Lee, went to the factory basement to use the toilet. After leaving the toilet, Lee discovered Phagan's body in the rear of the basement near an incinerator and called the police.

I live in Kennesaw its right next to Marietta
Both cities have a ton of history like this!
@@Jarrett_derryberry I had American history in 8th grade, usually when I learn about historical stuff it's always in a different state or country but history got my attention when i learned about stuff that happened close to where I live, like the battle if Kennesaw. Ive know Kennesaw mountain but never knew there was a battle on it ,I was baffled to learn over 4000 soldiers died on that mountain
@@ed1tz468 I am the same way. You should research the winecoff hotel fire. It happened in Atlanta. It was the worst hotel fire in U.S. history. The building still stands today and it is now called the Ellis hotel.
@@Jarrett_derryberry I will be sure to, I have nothing to do this summer other than go to the park and play video games
@Jarrett Derrberry Could you please give slightly more details on how to specifically find Mary's grave within that cemetery? It looks like it is near a road or street. Is it? Would that street be Powder Springs Rd? I want to some day go there and pay my respects to Little Mary.
I think I’ve figured it out from maps. Looks like if you drive into the cemetery entrance on West Atlanta Street (there seems to be two, but use the one closest to Cemetery Street) and take the second left in the cemetery and drive towards Cemetery Street. The marker and grave site will be 7 graves in from the fence line. This is easy to see as well from the iPhone map app with satellite turned on. If you were to turn onto Cemetery Street (a dead end) it would be the second possible road INTO the cemetery that is blocked by the fence line.
@@mathewterrancefricks Is Cemetery St. inside of the cemetery? Mary's grave is close to the fence. The street that is outside of the cemetery that is close to Mary's grave is Powder Springs St. I am wondering if Cemetery St. and Powder Springs St are somehow the same streets.
@@tonyharden7159 (if you see two replies, sorry, I responded earlier but don’t see it) I drove down from SC today and visited Mary’s grave! Cemetery Street is not within the fence and is the road running on the outside. Homes and driveways are accessible from this road. Powder Springs Road is (seemingly) a named road inside the cemetery. There is a small building in the cemetery on this road so the address of the cemetery is for that, I bet. Powder Springs is one of two roads into the site from Atlanta street. This is the road you will turn in on before taking the second left down the rows of plots. It comes quick. Mary is near the end of that road on the right. There are two historical markers with writings to help you find it. 10 minutes from the cemetery is the historical marker in the area where Leo Frank was lynched as well. And (unrelated) about 8 minutes away from THAT are the gravesites of JonBenet and Patsy Ramsey at St. James Episcopal Cemetery. Happy to help you better locate all of the above if you want to DM me on Instagram. @mathewterrancefricks
