glyn evans Hi Glyn I was pleased with that as well, most spaniels (as many of the labs did as well!) will work the hedge line but I do train my dogs to go through obstacles as well as over them, I have found it a really useful skill in the shooting field. Cheers Nick
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, I hope you are very proud of Ted, I would have usually used a labrador or even German shorthaired pointer for the longer or more technical retrieves but this was a very big win for the cocker! Well done, keep the videos coming.
Hi Rick...these tests are “novice” and so the retrieves can be anything up to 100 yards both seen and blind. They are designed for the retrieving breeds such as labs etc but I enjoy competing with Ted at this kind of test, the biggest hurdle a spaniel has to over-come is that their eye line is lower so getting a good mark can be more challenging, that is why I have taught Ted a “mark” command...he knows that if I use that he has to look out towards the dummy thrower....Just one point that I have learnt when training.....vary the distance of the retrieves as if you concentrate too much on always sending the dog for long ones they can quite often run right over short retrieves as they are not expecting anything to be that close. Hope this helps. Cheers Nick
Nick, as usual great to watch, thank you. What brand “ retrieving dummy vest “ is that you’re wearing? I have just got a Labrador pup and I am looking for something similar. Regrettably a lot of distributors do not ship to Australia, buggered if I know why. Cheerio, Bob.
Robert Whinnen Hi Robert...the vest is made by an American company called FireDog we have a few distributors in the UK...may be worth sending a message to Gary McCarthy of gundoggear.com to see if he can help out. Cheers Nick

I pick up quite a few from the various FaceBook pages and the KC web site. Also Google “Gundog Clubs” and look on their test pages. Cheers Nick
What are the approximate lengths of the retrieves in these tests? Thinking about trying to work up to this level in training.
