If you also want to escape the tropical heat, consider visiting Cameron Highlands for its cooling weather all year round and ample scenic hills. This was my first time driving outside of Singapore and driving for more than 45 mins at once!!! (For those who don't know SG is a tiny red dot and you can basically drive from east to west in less than an hour)

You may also consider renting a car in Johor, there are quite a few companies that you can pick up at JB Sentral (cross from woodlands checkpoint)
We raked up approx RM85 in toll and petrol was about RM200.
