    1. offer your hand to sniff before making contact.
    2. acknowledge them if they come and solicit attention.
    3. learn their body language - for example, if they sit near you with their back turned, they're not sending you a message. they're just hanging out! that's how they chill.
    4. mimic their vocalizations back to them. they'll learn that you don't speak their language, but that you're still interested in interacting with them.
    5. if you have to trim their claws or brush their teeth or something, be as quick and painless as you can, and then let them jump down as soon as it's over. they know you're grooming them, they just don't like that kind lol.

@shadocadink5014 I curl up my fingers (sheath my claws) & make my fist loosely form the shape of a cat's head, then gently stroke it from nose to ear across my cat's cheekbone. (This is how two friendly cats naturally say hello, by marking each other with their facial scent glands.)
It got to the point where my cat Jasper would stand on his hind legs, reach his head up to my hands & keep bumping me until I properly "said hello" to him. (He's also marking me as "Mine! Jasper's Human.", but that's just how cats roll...)

They don't have the capacity to even process that, all they want is for their needs to be met and to be treated with kindness, patience, and respect. This is so important! I grew up with an indoor/outdoor barn cat who didn't like being held. I got her used to it by picking her up briefly indoors, staying as still as possible when standing, and then putting her down as soon as she squirmed. She eventually enjoyed being picked up indoors but never outdoors! I think she was "on the job" outdoors and didn't like being distracted.

Try picking them up like they're a leopard sleeping in a tree in the wild:
      ● Put your arm through their legs, so that their head is resting in the palm of your hand & their arms can grab around your wrist.
      ● Put your other hand to give them support under their dangling hind legs. (This so that they can launch off if they feel like it.)
This posture is both relaxing & gives them the sense of control that they can leave any time they want.
If they drift off to sleep - but grab on tighter in their sleep when you try to take them off - then you've succeeded in making a half cat/half limpet for life... ; )~
Eventually, they'll jump into your arms all on their own.

@@Inmate16 Because cats generally aren't ever going to "Obey" you. You train them to do things by getting them to agree it is mutually beneficial. Consent. Cats respond to positive reinforcement but do not respond to negative reinforcement.

    • @bluesrocker91
      @bluesrocker91 6 дней назад

@@Inmate16 It just means you've got to treat cats like the individuals they are. They have different moods, routines, needs and wants over the course of a day, just like we all do, and to have a good relationship with a cat you need to learn how to read them and respect them.
When my cat wanted to be picked up he'd usually sit at my feet, gazing up at me purring. He might paw at my feet or even go up on his hind legs to try and reach up to me. Then when I did bend down he'd practically leap into my arms, before going limp, totally relaxed. Purring the whole time.
If he didn't want picking up he'd usually go stiff, leaning away towards the thing he really wanted, like his food bowl or the back door. A bit like how a baby reaches for the things it wants while being carried. In that case I'd usually just take him where he wanted to go and put him down again.

When my cats were kittens, I picked them up a lot but a) was careful to let their back legs rest on my arm so they weren't dangling from my grasp, b) I would put them down again immediately if they didn't seem to enjoy it, and c) I would put them gently back on the floor. That gradually taught them that a) they weren't going to fall when I was holding them, b) I wouldn't keep them trapped against their will, and c) I wasn't going to drop them. They started trusting me and tolerating being held for longer and longer, then wanting to be held more and more.

Listen to their body language and respect it! I notice a lot of people love dogs and that’s awesome, but you can’t generally speaking approach a cat the same way. I’m autistic so like, approach cats as if they are autistic. They’re sensitive to noises and other stimuli and often don’t want to be touched or only want to be touched in certain ways. You can also establish words for things that happen in your cat’s life. Like my cat knows the word for brush. Then I added showing her the actual brush. Then we worked out that I would wait to do the actual act of brushing until she touched her nose to it. Also when you pick up your cat, understand you can easily squish their ribs and organs. I’ve noticed one hand supporting the chest and the other past the end of the ribcage works best. Your cat likely prefers different textures at different times as well. My couch has three different blankets for my cat to choose between!

Its really hard to convey to people. My roommates cat adopted me, would go through my window. (Basically her two other cats would gang up on him because the baby stray didnt know how to play normally). So i made my room a safe and neutral zone.
But the odd thing is that they boy, he wasnt into being picked up. But id still pick him up at times when he was happy and calm and enjoyed my pets. I would hold him past his initial instinct to jump down, but not if he was panic struggling. As soon as that initial instinct to jump down passed id hold him supported under his legs and lightly against me so he wouldnt fall awkwardly. When he leaned out to jump down, id let him go. Eventually over maybe a year or twos time with us building our bond in other ways, it went from five second holds to thirty seconds. Years later there came a time when i could hold him with his legs splayed out (like a partial side lay) for a short period of time, when intitially he hated it. He was always a super friendly cat, a charmer of any neighborhood or roommates i had. But im peobably the only one who could hold him for any length of time and him be perfectly happy with it. He knew he could always jump down. He never craved it like some cats do or climb up himself. (My current cat is a shoulder cat and could stay in my arms for minutes at a time).
Its just a combination of being firm but actually listening and responding to their mood right. Its so hard to explain though, to someone who doesnt understand cats that way or doesnt know how to interpret their behavior.

For our cats, we can hand them back and forth like butter and they do not care one iota. But my husband literally raised them from birth and we held them A LOT and played with them constantly so they were very well-socialized by the time we left and came home with two of them. Everyone asks the same thing, how are they so chill, so sweet, etc. A lot of it is raising from kittens…but also just taking the time to respect them. I had an old lady calico at the time as well I’d gotten when she was 12 and she was very ornery, didn’t like being held AT ALL and would not sit on my lap/cuddle. I didn’t care, she was cute and I could give scritches and she’d purr; I just wanted an old cat to have a good retirement. Over the next few years, she started sitting next to me on the couch. She’d still pretend she didn’t want to, with her back facing me and up against my side/leg. She was such a tsundere, pretending she didn’t want to cuddle at all, but would melt a little when I’d reach over and scritch. When I found something she didn’t like, I stopped it or took it away. Older cats need a good amount of respect and if you’re willing to put the time in, they’ll respect you back.

Under stress, even the most trusting cat can accidentally go bananas on you. I had two sisters, they were amazing cats, trusted me with their bellies, I could manipulate them without stress, finger snaps or simple vocal commands could get them to do or stop a lot of things, loved me to bits and answered to their names. But when really scared, they would even forget that they were sisters that had been together their whole lives and get scared of each other and show aggression.
It's just a glitch in the cat hardware 💙 It doesn't always mean a lack of training or trust from them, just a brain overload. Contrary to dogs, cats are as much prey animal as they are hunters. Some of them are really good at being afraid, it's in the blood.
You are right on the money with the respect. This is paramount with cats. Learning their expressions and needs is important, and you set an amazing exemple of the concept 💙

Most people actually don't bother to build a relationship of trust with their cats tbh And those people are always the ones complaining that their cat is a jerk, meanwhile I'm watching them invade their cats bubble and ignore them when they make their boundaries known and it's like "Yeah I wouldn't like you either if you treat me like that." 😐 It's actually not al that difficult to bond with cats as long as you show mutual respect for them and engage with them regularly. Getting them used to being touched and loved on can take a little bit but that's to be expected. You couldn't just walk up to most creatures - humans included - and expect to be on great terms right off the bat but people have very little patience for cats in comparison imo

She didn't warm up to me fully until one time there was a snap thunderstorm and it started downpouring and she got herself wedged under a wheelbarrow (which offered overhead shelter but the rain was hard and the huge raindrops were throwing up mud splatters!) I had to run out in the downpour, quickly untangle and release her harness, and run back to the house holding her while I used my body to shield her from the rain. Cat acted like I was her best friend after that

Last year, we took in a kitten that the mother cat abandoned. I'm not a cat person. For some reason, the cat chose me to be its person. I'm not sure if it could pick up something on me. Some friends think that the cat chose me because we had to put my 16yr old dog down a few months prior. The cat is very protective of me for some reason. I've taken out trash to the dumpster and there would be other cats on top of it. My cat would charge at them to get them off the dumpster. Last night, I was on the porch holding my cat. Another cat walked by outside the fence. My cat raised hell until the other cat left.

Definitely agree in acknowledging cats as independent beings helps to get them to respect and love you. They're thinking, feeling creatures, not accessories to someone's lifestyle.
When I got my current batch of cats post-college, I decided to take some harder cases because I'd spend most of my life working with animals, especially cats, and knew I could give a home to some cats who might not otherwise be adopted.
I picked a feral teen mom. She's not scarred, but she's not a pretty cat due to her markings making her head look lopsided (it's and optical illusion). Her kittens had been weaned and found homes, and she'd been at the shelter for a year with the volunteers working with her, and none of them could really handle her. She was supposed to be in a cage at night, but they couldn't put her away, but since she wasn't bothering anyone, they would just leave her out at nights and she would hide on one of the upper cages or on a cat tree.
The other cat I got was shy, but was at least friendly and playful. I got him because he was more easy going, but would not have done well in a house with kids or lots of guests. But I also got him as a "Judas Cat" to demonstrate that humans were not scary, or at least that I'm not scary.
I also observed the kind of tree that Teen Mom cat liked to hang out on. Since I was going to have to buy all the cat equipment right now, I got her one with the kind of seat she liked to snuggle into. I was moving house, and my living room was large. I put my sofa in the middle of the room, facing the TV (I had a desk and stuff behind it) And I put the cat tree right behind the sofa. It was kind of a trick for her, and kind of because that seemed like a good place to put things.
Basically from that tree, she could see about 80% of the house, and could see people coming at her from all angles. So if she wanted to run, she had the option to do so. Eventually just by letting her run away if she wanted to run away, and not chasing her, she stopped running away. She stuck to her tree, and at first I wouldn't even touch her in the tree. Eventually I moved to petting her. And then I started placing my head on her back to nuzzle and show affection. If she wanted to run, I would let her run. She didn't. I never pick her up off of the tree. And I almost never pick her up at all unless she needs to go to the vet. But the tree is like a safe spot in tag. Nothing bad happens to her on her tree.
She eventually got comfortable even if it took her 9 months to decide to sleep on the bed.
When she was 6 years old, after having her for 4 years, she started training herself to be a lap cat. She really loves being a lap cat, and she has zero petting aggression. She loves belly rubs. I think if she hadn't had an awful life, she would have been a great family cat. But she did have a traumatic life, and so she's always got a bit of fear about new people or large groups of people.
She's become a real snuggle bug and is currently crawling all over me as I write this. Also really just loves to listen to women talking. I don't know why, but if girl talk is going on, she wants to be one of the girls.
But everyone is different and needs different things, and you have to start out treating them that way, for sure.

Don't take the scratches personally, it's a cat's nature to react in the moment without a thought for their immediate future. Instinct and reflexes are what has kept them alive throughout their evolution so when a bitty kitty accidentally cuts you or bites out of fear, or even tries to take you down like prey, at the very least it's a good survival instinct.

What most people do wrong is to want their cat to be like a tiny dog, so yeah, they'll hate you. lol
Do not pick them up if they don't want, don't disturb their sleep time, most of them aren't lap pets, so don't expect yours to be. Keep their needs (food, water, clean sand box, toys) in check. It shouldn't be that hard. And don't forget to spend enough time with them while also respecting their personal space.
I just pick up my cat and pet her when she calls for attention, if not I just assume she wants to be left alone. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong because I'm definitely her favorite person in the house, she just calls my brother or my mom when she wants food 😂

Not all cats are the same, some absolutely love being picked up and definitely are lap cats. There is no one size fits all for how work with any kind of animal. You have to get to know the individual personality of the specific animals you have, cause even two of the same breed can have completely different personalities. Many cats do love being picked up and some don't. Some are lap cats, some aren't. It's okay to pick up your kittens as long as they are okay with it, and some will even prefer it and hop on you themselves.

@@creasedhorizon8931 thats what I said. Most don't like it, a few do. My advice to avoid disappointment is to EXPECT it doesn't like it. If they like to be lap pets, good for ya, if not, respect it.
My late cat couldn't stay five minutes away from me without begging to be in my lap. I literally wore hoodies 24/7 when at home because he liked to be inside the pocket like a baby kangaroo. My actual cat isn't like this, I just respect her space and wait until she wants to be picked up and petted.

I completely agree with the picking up part. Im a cat owner , myself and I almost always picked up my cat when I was a kid, I don't know why. I actually ended up learning the hard way to not pick her up like I did, shes an old cat with bad hips and legs. And since I didn't support her legs properly she attacked my hand. She didn't really do much damage (just 2-3 small scratches and a small hole where her tooth periced my hand) I had a small allergic reaction, and didn't pick her up again after that.
And because of that, she actually wanted to be around me. Since she used to avoid me, and I genuinely do feel awful about making her hide and run away from me because I some reason wanted to pick her up. I'm still somehow one of her favorite people (my mom is the only other one), and I am happy she doesn't feel the need to hide or run away from me anymore. Its nice having her come up to me for attention (mainly its just her coming up to be to beg for more food even though shes been fed already)

One of the ways I think me and my girl ava bonded was her fear of thunderstorms and helping her get through it 💜
We had a cat tree with a cubby level with the floor, she liked laying in there normally so when storms started and she started getting freaked out I tried getting her to go lay there instead of under the bed one time and I laid on the floor petting and talking to her till she fell asleep before using a shirt to cover the opening so she still had my scent 💜 eventually she went there automatically because she's a fast learner and now she's not really bothered by thunderstorms if at all. It could be that she's older since she wasn't even 2 when we got her and it's been a couple years since but something tells me that I helped at least a little. She's so wildy different then when we brought her home, like a turtle who came from her shell 💜

The trust thing is so important. But also it's situational, getting her to tolerate cuddles and continuing to give cuddles and walk around while cuddling is vital for essential care later on (like how people should also familiarise cats with crates outside of vet trips so they don't develop that "fear").
My mum only picks up our old lady cat for the vet or for my kids to give her pets so she doesn't really tolerate it. But if I lay on the floor in her sunbeam like I have for the past 18 years and stay with her she will tolerate my toddler being overenthusiastic with smooches and pets (won't tolerate fur grabbing but kid only had to learn that lesson once), or one of my big kids talking too loud. She trusts me, and she trusts me in her space.

When we decided we were going to keep her we found out she was pregnant. She had four of the most healthiest beautiful kittens you've ever seen. We gave one to our good friend one to our daughter and we kept the other two, spawn and rougarou. Everything you said about earning your cat's trust is right. Another good thing, after your cat trusts you and lets you pick it up and put them by your neck, purr a little bit just like a cat to them. You don't have to do it loud you don't have to do it long just a little bit. They will take that as communicating love to them. Luna our deaf Kitty almost asks me to do it now. We got her fixed and shots and she will live a long happy healthy life.

My cat only trusts people that have fed him.

Nate, you have great instincts when it comes to caring for all the animals on your homestead. You are gentle, patient, and loving, and they respond well to you. You have crafted a wonderful living space. Of course, Minion really runs things. Luckily he is a benevolent leader. 😊

Love watching you interact with the furbabies. The kittens bring lots of memories back. I ended up with 12 kitties we rescued. By the time they were better I fell in love with them. We lived in the county then. The boy cats were great care givers and took care of them but the females said forget it. As they got older, they got a long great. Lol. It's amazing each one had their own personality. They bought me a lot of joy. Dagger is being real good with them. You're doing a great job with your animals. Minion and AZ are really cool and so well behaved.
