My favorite knives moment cut from the movie...she once attacks ramona in the library, and before escaping, throws a knife with a scroll attached to it at her, yelling "Here's something to remember me by!" Ramona easily blocks the knife, confusedly unrolls the scroll, which says simply, "you're fat and i hate you!"

I first read the comics and watched the movie as a little baby 11/12 year old who was very much like Knives early on in that I was obsessed with older guys who were in bands or wore alternative clothes and honestly most of my friends were like that too. It's sooooo common in alternative music communities for young, impressionable girls to get swept up in older shitty musician guys' drama and bullshit. Bryan Lee O'Malley probably saw a loooot of it in the alt music scene growing up (I know he was big into Plumtree and other Canadian punk/rock) so Knives and Scott's relationship feels so realistic. I'm not sure what it is about alt music guys and this constant arrested development they have that makes them feel like the only girls they can date have to be literal teenagers but it's there. You see it in so many pop punk bands, the genre is littered with songs about 'evil women who treat men like shit' that are actually about teenage girls who are being preyed upon by men in their 20s. Knives' arc is so special to me, I really feel such a kinship with her. I wish there was some amount of following her through college because it probably would have helped me in my early uni days so much but the story was never focussed on her. At first, Scott should've ended up with Knives rather than ramona but in reality, Knives is just way too good for Scott and she's 17, she's not mentally and emotionally equipped to handle adult breakups.
I don't think people realize the nuance of Scott’s character. He's not an intentional asshole, he's just inconsiderate and careless. The point of the story is for Scott to realize that just because the Evil Exes are openly jerks doesn't mean he can't be just as bad as them. That's what makes Scott likable as well, he's adorably clueless and detached from responsibility in the way only someone in their early 20s can be, he has no responsibilities. In the comics, a full year passes and it shows a lot of this growth. He gets a job and moves in with Ramona and pushes her to be better, just as Scott does. Knives is not a good fit for Scott, not only because of the age gap but because he's young and naive and thinks he's perfect. She would never push him to be better, and he would always end up treating her horribly, it would be a neglectful relationship. Ramona’s baggage forces Scott to reflect on how poorly he's treated his partners, and forces him to realize that he's sheltering himself from a lot of improvement by refusing to listen to his exes and accept that he handled things poorly. I hope this is what people are taking away from the story, not just that Scott is an asshole and that Ramona is hot. That they are two dysfunctional people who push each other to be better because of their flaws, and only when they can accept that they aren't paragons of virtue they can become better. The point is that you have to choose to be better and acknowledge that you did, not just demonize people. That's the joke of the evil exes. That they are what happens when you demonize your ex-partners so much that they just embrace it and become mutual enemies. Media literacy is dead lol.
One thing being overlooked here though: Knives doesn't hesitate for a second to manipulate Young Neil into a one-sided relationship with her that she had no sincere intentions about. We forgive her because she's young and going through some difficult new feelings, and because Neil is a wet sack of potatoes, but it's the same thing Scott was doing. Both were rebounding, both entered a fake relationship to fulfill needs, both were good enough not to cross any lines that would have made their behavior unforgivable, but neither cared that they were dooming the other person to a breakup. We rightly hold Scott to a higher standard of course. And he does appear to be aware that this relationship isn't normal or healthy.
For me, I believe casting Micheal Cera as Scott was great. If you remember in the movie he earns the power of *self respect* so to earn that power, Scott would have had to have no self respect to begin with. Micheal Cera has the ability to look awkward (even if he isn’t in real life [correct me if I’m wrong]) so I think casting him as Scott was very well done.
Knives wasn't one of my favorites, but this made me see how she got done dirty by Scott. She does deserve better. I mean, Scott and Ramona work for each other, but it would have been so much better if Knives wasn't hurt like she was. As for my buddy who says Scott and Knives should have stayed together, now I have something to say besides she was too young for him.
I watched the film for the first time a month ago (I know, super late to the party) and I really liked Knives! Great analysis, cant wait to see more of your vids :)
I wish we could get that as well, and who knows? Maybe Knives will get the happy ending she rightfully deserves with someone who she falls in love with, imagine that.
It absolutely confuses me how anyone could read the comics or watch the movie and somehow overlook Knives. Like it's in Scott's character (especially in the comics) to be an asshole. I dont get how that could go overlook even once, let alone, multiple rereads.
Omg thanks for this video!!!! Your voice are so sweet and I totally identified with Knives, cause she is a inocent young girl, and he only cared about futile things and hurted her in your first date. Anyway, this is happening to me :c I'm sad, but this helped me :)
Maybe because my first viewing of Scott Pilgrim was as a cynical adult, but I felt like Knives deserved better in my first watching. Seeing Scott mistreat her, and knowing that what she wants, to date Scott, is even worse than what she's getting, defined how I viewed Scott. Which I think is okay, characters don't have to be likeable. It was still a compelling movie when I saw a creep find his niche and develop power, in spite of it making his worse qualities more damaging
As much as it was clear in the beginning that Scott and Knives didn't have a future, I felt the same way about Scott and Ramona at the end. I never got the happy, Hollywood ending feels when they walk together through the door at the end. Even with Gideon's control defeated and Scott having gone through personal growth during the final battle, I always felt that Scott and Ramona were maybe going to date for a few months and then head their own separate ways. They just never seemed really right for each other. Scott was more in love with the idea of Ramona than Ramona as a person and Ramona still has some stuff to work through before she let's someone get close. It's not a bad ending per se, just not an overly cheery one. I get that same very feeling at the conclusion of another coming of age movie, American Graffiti. With American Graffiti, you get character prologues, which aren't all positive, but even without them, it's not a clean, optimistic ending, but I think it's a realistic ending.
Thats basically the whole point of her character. Someone who deserved better. They especially point this out in the books. She's supposed to be the block that prevents us from fully relating to scott, and seeing that hes really the bad guy in the beginning. It starts scott's arc and provides drama.
When I first watched the movie I had a huge crush on Knives and spent the whole runtime of the movie hating how Scott treated her :P I mean.. Look at how good she is at DDR...
In the book Knives has a side relationship with Kim it's in one of the special editions, and only mentioned as a "drunk kiss" in the fourth book, however in the special edition I think they have a more extended relationship during a summer vacation but I could be wrong
i've watched this one music video (she plays bass by beabadoobee), and a lot of the comments there kept mentioning about how it's similar to scott pilgrim (particularly the wardrobe). now, im about to enter a rabbit hole and binge watch videos related to sp even though i havent watched the film nor read the comics yet. kinda unrelated to the video i know, but it's funny how you can end up from one thing to another. (also, i think im going to be obssessed with sp for a while bc of knives. she's hella cute)
knives was my favorite character. you hit all the right points about her arch. love that she basically turns into Mulan but without the love story in the middle instead of at the end XD
Never heard that Scott was supposed to end up alone. Maybe in the early drafts? But the test screenings was the ending with Knives, but 50% of the audience hated it so it was changed to ending up with Ramona like the final book.
I absolutely love that I got this on my recommended, and I totally agree. I really liked Knives and felt very sorry for her thorough the movie and also felt that she needed to be more appreciated. Also I really like how you mention that no ONE is 100% good, the charm of the characters is that they're human. However, the problem comes (at least for me) when you brush off certain things, especially from Ramona and Scott, and glorify them for it, making it seem that Ramona is this perfect "manic pixie dream girl" and Scott this awesome protagonist who actually and would most likely dump Ramona too and become total scum.
Yeah after i realized how lame Scott Pilgram actually is as a person i came upon this video. I totally agree with everything, & i feel like the only reason he's dating someone who is underage is to explore the character archetype of 'unlikable hero you still kind of like sometimes but is a shithead'. I mean there's a lot to explore when you pair two characters like that together, innocent vs not, interest vs disinterest, i feel like most people have been in a sort of relationship where they've either dated someone they weren't that interested in or viceversa. There's a lot of awkwardness & beating-around-the-bush that adds to the complication & dynamics to characters.
Knives anger definitely should’ve been directed at Scott instead of Ramona. I’m glad she was able to move on and find happiness by the end of the series though (at least in the comics, I haven’t watched the movie)
I liked and love Knives. As a teenager watching Scott Pilgrim I could relate to her minus the dating part. She expressed the feelings I did and didn't show, and I love a lovesick character that's as young as I am.
I love this movie, the setting, the style, the humor, but something I never managed to like is both Scott and Ramona. Scott's motivation and pretty much the thing that drives the plot is Scott wants to date Ramona, that's it. I'd guess it's different in the comic, but I feel the movie kind of failed at making us care about Ramona, Scott thinks she's cute, that's pretty much it. It also didn't help that (personal opinion) the actress playing Knives is WAY more attractive than the actress playing Ramona, so pretty much building the entire movie over the fact Scott tough she was cute when he spotted her and he stalked her while she's didnt care about him and then they have some tea. Not only I cant empathize with Scott wanting to be with Ramona, I can't see either why Ramona would ever want to be with Scott. I like that movie, the randomness and never explained super powers, the video game style, but the main characters motivations are weak and rushed. #teamknives
She does deserve better, Scott should've told her about Ramona and ended it there. It might've hurt but it would have hurt a lot less than being cheated on. Also remember at the end of the movie where there all walking out and then Knives tells Scott that his hair is getting shaggy, that was the cutest scene in the movie for me, because it seemed like they were a thing again. I just don't like Ramona that much as a character she acts so dead all the time. So I like Knives and Scott. I think Knives is the best character morally speaking. She didn't really do anything wrong tbh. But it's hard to think about what the story would be like without her, because her being there purposefully created a lot of conflict and controversy.
Personally I dont think Scott and Knvies loved each other when they were together. Scott wanted someone easy and fun, and Knives look up to him for being older and in a band and "cool" I kind of felt that Scott dated Knives cause he felt secure and she wouldn't dump him like Envy did. There is not really any love between them, and i feel both characters are super relatable to 2 different demographics which also might be the reason they made her 17. Young love dont last, your first relationship with a someone never works out and being dumpes for the first time also completely breaks you. The other demographic are people like Scott who find a much younger partner because they might not be ready for the responsibilities of adulthood. It is more fun to play video games at the arcade and not having a care in the world than to deal with stuff like your partner might have exes that they still have feelings for.
Thing about Scott Pilgrim and Ramona is that their terrible people who deserve eachother. Knives deserved a lot better of a guy than Scott to date in her life.
I've only seen the movie once, and it was in 7th grade, but even then I remember just feeling sorry for Knives and being grossed out that a grown man was dating a teenager.
knives deserved sm better😤 sh got cheated on and dumped but all the while before the breakup she was sooo supportive and happy w Scott even though he did nothing but brush her off☹️
I always see a lot of people saying Scott should have stayed with knives but that’s not the point And I like how this video actually addresses that Scott should have never dated knives in the first place, he only dated her because it was simple and easy, he did right to make the decision to break up with her, but it’s just the way he did it, and how he also cheated on her that make his actions scummy. A good way of representing this is like if someone gave you a free sandwich, you accept it but then you see a cheesecake that you truly want, but you have to buy it. The right thing to do would be to give the sandwich back to the person that gave it to you or give it to someone else so the food is not wasted, then buy the cheesecake. What Scott did was basically eat the cheesecake and then throw away the sandwich, wasting the free food
Just talking movie here because I didn't read the source material, which I should probably remedy some time, lol. Knives was always my favourite character, because she seems like the only one whose arc really makes a difference in her life. Sure, Scott learned to apologise and be less shitty to his (girl)friends, but he and Ramona still end up together. For the right reasons this time, but they basically still end up where they already were an hour ago. It feels like the end of the movie and the realisation that Scott actually manipulated her as well as Ramona and that she really is too good for him and had no reason to ever chase him after he broke up with her after already having cheated on her. Just seems like she learned to respect herself a lot more and simultaneously forgive Scott despite his severe shittyness. She's just the bigger person. And that at 17. Anyway, thank you so much for this video. I'm gonna throw a sub your way, hoping to get more gems like this video in the future. (:
the part I like best about scott pilgrim and this part of it really, is that him dating knives is portrayed as a completely bad thing. not justified whatsoever and only adds to the pile of his shitty traits. makes his arc to accepting his mistakes and trying to grow with ramona near the end really land well for me.
YES! Knives is my favorite character and I really like the Knives x Kim ship for some reason. Knives was basically dragged into a bunch of drama and she's the only one that didn't really have to deal with baggage. Micheal Cera has the ability to look awkward (even if he isn’t in real life [correct me if I’m wrong]) so I think casting him as Scott was very well done.
I’ve been waiting for this! I always loved knives and thought she was done dirty
I only watched the movie and Knives was immediately my favorite character
“I would love to see it adapted as a tv show at some point” 3yrs later BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU
Knives wasn't one of my favorites, but this made me see how she got done dirty by Scott.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed!
a mini series about knives and her college life would be pretty cool... i just need to see more of her 😭
I wish we could get that as well, and who knows?
Knives is the only character I like lol.

ramona sucks
I agree. She's like the sakura of scott pilgrim
@@sherrilogan5400 sakura is way better, hell no.
Knive should have ended up gaining self confidence and being with a more mature, stable guy
My new favorite genre of youtube is videos that should have many more views but just don't. I'm only 2:41 in and I already know I'm gonna love this
Omg thank you I appreciate that!!
Knives is actually favorite character I like in the game
Knives is Badass! She has so much courage & heart. I adore her. ❤
This was dope, keep up the great work💓
Thank you!!
i’ve always loved knives, scott was so terrible to her
dw knives got justice on Scott pilgrim takes off
Knives does deserve better! 💚
Great video. Knives was the best character in that story. She didn't need Scott.
She expressed the feelings I did and didn't show, and I love a lovesick character that's as young as I am.
everyone who dated scott deserves better
bro i really resinated with knives when she called her a fat ass white girl
ramona annoyed me at the end when scott admitted to both of them he cheated on them.
and ramona said you cheated on me with knives like she used her name as other
I love this movie, the setting, the style, the humor, but something I never managed to like is both Scott and Ramona.
#teamknives
I had no idea that liking the Knives character was a controversial position
Scott totally groomed Knives
Ok that's a reach.

Great Job!! Thanks for making this!
knives literally got groomed by scott
She does deserve better, Scott should've told her about Ramona and ended it there. It might've hurt but it would have hurt a lot less than being cheated on. Also remember at the end of the movie where there all walking out and then Knives tells Scott that his hair is getting shaggy, that was the cutest scene in the movie for me, because it seemed like they were a thing again. I just don't like Ramona that much as a character she acts so dead all the time. So I like Knives and Scott. I think Knives is the best character morally speaking. She didn't really do anything wrong tbh. But it's hard to think about what the story would be like without her, because her being there purposefully created a lot of conflict and controversy.
your best american girl is knives anthem
Knives has always been my fave
Personally I dont think Scott and Knvies loved each other when they were together.
Scott wanted someone easy and fun, and Knives look up to him for being older and in a band and "cool"
I kind of felt that Scott dated Knives cause he felt secure and she wouldn't dump him like Envy did.
Knives Chau is so cute!
Thing about Scott Pilgrim and Ramona is that their terrible people who deserve eachother. Knives deserved a lot better of a guy than Scott to date in her life.
I never liked Ramona and always thought Knives was better and I STILL STAND BY THAT OPINION
You can't deny it. It's WAY better for Scott to be with Ramona than Knives. As stated, "Knives is too good for him."
@@j.d.t.5761i would Kill to be with Knives Chau. Scott needs to be with Knives Chau
always been in love with Knives character
I've only seen the movie once, and it was in 7th grade, but even then I remember just feeling sorry for Knives and being grossed out that a grown man was dating a teenager.
knives deserved sm better😤 sh got cheated on and dumped but all the while before the breakup she was sooo supportive and happy w Scott even though he did nothing but brush her off☹️
She was too good for him
Knives should’ve had an arc where she realized Scott is a horrible person and cut herself out of his life, including his friends.
knives was always one of my favourite character
I always see a lot of people saying Scott should have stayed with knives but that’s not the point And I like how this video actually addresses that
Scott should have never dated knives in the first place, he only dated her because it was simple and easy, he did right to make the decision to break up with her, but it’s just the way he did it, and how he also cheated on her that make his actions scummy.
Knives is the actual protagonist.
I like that Scott ended up with Ramona because in the comics and the game he ends up with knives so it gives everyone something to be happy about
I would totally do Micheal Cera though.
I've always been a fan a Knives. She became a cool badass woman and she does not need Scott. Scott did not deserve her or Romona.
the part I like best about scott pilgrim and this part of it really, is that him dating knives is portrayed as a completely bad thing. not justified whatsoever and only adds to the pile of his shitty traits.
makes his arc to accepting his mistakes and trying to grow with ramona near the end really land well for me.
Thank you so much! You’ve got a new subscriber!
Omg thank you! Welcome to the channel ^^
YES! Knives is my favorite character and I really like the Knives x Kim ship for some reason. Knives was basically dragged into a bunch of drama and she's the only one that didn't really have to deal with baggage. I kinda like the ship because it was one of the few, if not the only relationship that didn't seem toxic as hell.
What's funny about this is that the actress that plays Knives in this movie is actually 3 years older than him in real life.
Note: The age of consent in America varies by state but Scott is still effing creepy.
I LOVE THIS AAAAAA
Thank you!!
I just love her so much
Yeah knives did indeed deserves better.
age of consent is an artificial construct, so scott having a friendship is fine and remember in life someone in demand is desirable and has choices
No mention of when she dated Young Neil?
I just watched the movie for the first time and I cried when he broke up with her.
