- India has two Army battalions and a total of 2,547 men and women peacekeepers in South Sudan as the world’s largest democracy helps the world’s youngest country on the path of peace. In the first of a series of reports, SNI Associate Editor Amitabh P Revi and Video Journalist Prateek Suri document the areas of operations of INDBATT II, the 7 Garhwal Rifles Infantry Battalion, based in Bor and among other regions, Akobo, where only Indian blue-helmets are present.

I don't know why but it seems to me that India is becoming the next America on the world-stage.
Unlikely. Even when India attains a full superpower status in a couple of decades, it will be unlikely acting beyond bilateral or multilateral mandates.
The Indian mindset isn't of conquest or colonization, but of influence through diplomatic actions, humanitarian activities and trade. You might see more Indian tech, pharma, engineering etc. companies in Africa and other developing countries, but never Indian Army - unless they are there for safeguarding Indian embassy and other sovereign assets.
India's strategic ambitions are to secure her borders and the Indian Ocean while engaging in peacekeeping based on collective agreements with different institutions like the UN.
India wants to be more like modern-day France rather than USA.

Eye opening! These lesser know deployments of Indian armed forces should find more airtime on mainstream media. I recently learned from the internet that India has provided the most number of forces for peace keeping missions in UN's history....It's amazing if true since our own country has so many security threats from both external and internal forces and we still find ways to help other nations.

We were a very developed country more than a thousand yrs ago. Militarily we decayed, because of our basic philosophy of peace and later to leave things to fate. Today we are quite a strong country ( where else is there so much peace with so much diversity ) with a strong ageless roots for democracy and live and let live attitude. We may be poor in dollar terms but not so poor in rupee terms, as our people can buy the basic necessities for themselves with the amount they earn in India.

Usa was not at all interested in giving permanent seat to India but was to block china from getting one as there would be two communist countries on permanent seats. Even if India had accepted it russia would have vetoed it. And since we all know how important Russia proved during 1971, had nehru fallen for american trap, it would have rotten our relationship with russia.

I had the opportunity to attend ICEP, a joint training with young cadets from around the world, one of the countries being India. Even for being young (oldest being 20 I think) they were tough. They had a fierce fighting strength, and a great sense of comradery. Plus they can be funny as hell.
It's one thing to protect own's own nation and another to protect a nation that is on the other side of the planet. Their dedication is too much to let down these peacekeepers through the unfair play of the Security Council. Serious reforms are needed.

While certain 'developed' nations have been perpetually busy starting illegal wars, invasions and regime changes 'for the sake of democracy' around the world, India has been consistently investing its blood and treasure in Africa for decades. And all for almost zero credit - there's practically ZERO coverage of the outstanding accomplishments of Indian peacekeeping in Africa from 'reputable' news sources. While I am extremely proud of the sacrifices of generations of our troops, I find it harder with each passing day to support India contributing to a world that doesn't give a f-k. Do the Africans even care? Seems like they are largely willing to forget the decades of India's sacrifices and run towards the Chinese flashing their cash right now. No point being the nice guy in a wicked world.
