55:04 I don’t know anything about where it was supposed to play (in all the old builds of the game that I played it was nowhere to be found), but I always turn it on at the moment when Barney accompanies us to the window (I’m guessing the office building) where Nexus of City 17 is visible. 59:20 Personally, I always turn it on when Gordon goes up to Wallace Breen's office. You can't imagine HOW WELL THIS TRACK FITS THE VISUAL! Especially the end of the track which brings us to the moment when we see the city below us from the huge windows. 1:00:53 This is the first time they've played at the temple in Lost Coast and I think the location and stuff just suits the track perfectly #lostcoastmisunderstood also, realy cool video dude :)
21:06 The big pit under the citadel is supposed to show (at least to me) that even with the gigantic scale of the citadel, it *still* is bigger than you can imagine, burrowing deep into the earth like a parasite It also acts as a large scale antlion thumper, as in episode 1, after its destruction, antlions are in the city
Correction: Apprehensive Short plays in Forget About Freeman when encountering the big fish (I forgot it's name). Although I haven't encountered the track playing, but it is said in the soundtrack page on Combine Overwiki. And Scared Confusion Short plays at the place where you meet the Antlion Guard, not Apprehensive Short.
Nice video. But sadly I don't agree with the start of ambience section. Expect me to actively rant about it. 8:38 It was reused in HL2 when you enter the room full of explosive barrels and manhacks. And here's the *ambience section.* Generally you judged the tracks not as ambience, even though you made the category. I expected you'd rank them accordingly. 12:41 It gives some sense of... determination? Because at that moment you basically can't die and rip through combines, and the game is about to end, this track makes you feel unstoppable and determined to move forward. It's one of the tracks I still remember sometimes 12:52-13:10 I don't agree, though it is forgetable. It fits and that what matters for *ambience.* In that moment it gives sense of realizing the city is engulfed in war and destruction. Really just makes you feel sad for a moment. 13:19 It would change the mood. In that moment it gives the vibe of abandoned, long forgotten place, by the reasons known to us (Xenians and Combine). The track continues as we see refugee camp in such a place. Then when we enter the camp this vibe is continued by "Probably not a problem". 13:24-13:44 ; 13:45-14:14 If it fits then it's good? It's supposed to set a mood, not be a banger you should listen to. It's not a pleasant music cause it's supposed to unnerve you. 14:25-14:40 The track matches more something dark, unknown, hidden, that you're only discovering. In our case it's here because night time, but it would sound awkward when a sun settles.17:34-18:09 "Escape Array" matches the BME entrance more because we're entering something seemingly abandoned and hidden, we're excited to see it, but at the same time reliefed. It brings peace. Also the name fits too, think of it as Gordon finally escaping the endless fights, or resistance finding a place to escape the reality. 14:48-15:06 It's ambience. It fits the place, gives the intended vibe, and doesn't sound horrible. So for me it's good. Of course not an action banger, but what do you expect from ambience? 15:25-16:19 Again, it's ambience. It's not supposed to sound great, but to give a mood. You weren't off-topic, actually that's how you should rate ambience. It's a shame it didn't affect the rating. 16:37-16:53 Same as above. Okay, from here I mostly agree (and on some things I do absolutely agree, like all the action tracks) 18:24-18:35 It's not that the sounds fit, but more of the music sounding calming, as if it signifies we can relax and do something instead of fighting. 20:15-20:30 It also sounds as doing something important to humanity, because teleporter was just finished and we're the first ones to test it. 29:19 Based. 22:50-23:08 Seems unfitting and maybe you could rate it even lower, but actually it gives a tense vibe as if we're hiding and want to leave this place asap. I'm used to it being there so I kinda like it. 23:47 It builds up tension before the fight with controllers, so we expect something not yet known and waiting. 58:58 ; 59:59 These match action category more tbh.
yeah looking back i should've clarified when i give the good score it was really how good it sounds to listen to, which obviously yeah means the ambience tracks are lower because of that, not because they're bad just not something as great to listen to, i agree with pretty much all your points though.
I very much agree with all the points about ambience music, might also add that 12:51 to me always sounded more... unnerving? Like something is off about it, it plays around the city plaza where rebels tear off the Breen screen and cheer, but the song contrasts it really well in my opinion.
27:08 i believe kelly bailey also work on the portal ost. but portal reuses a lot of ambience tracks from half life 2, so that's probably why you made that link
"This track is moist sounding" is exactly how I would describe Demiensional Deepness, even though it sounds weird to say that. I just imagine I am being underwater when hearing this
Hazardous Environments is literally peak, how dare you rate it only 29 points. When the guitar kicks 😩😩😩 Regardless, great video lol, I hope you do more soundtrack ratings for other stuff, maybe even some prolific hl mods!
HeadHumper would've been used during one of the father grigori encounters while he says "but my bullets are least of your concerns" where father grigori would be replaced by a GMan jumpscare
My favourite tracks are: #1 Echoes of a resonace cascade / Space Ocean - I always imagine how the US government, right after the cascade, just knew that something terrible happened at Black Mesa but couldn't reach anyone by phone. A genius fed. scientist found a way to connect via internet to some scientific equipment in Black Mesa and was able to use them as a microphone of some kind. He was able to extract the sounds out of some magnetic infrared energy field, and was in terror when he heard the echoes of a resonance cascade. He could hear various blasts, explosions and energy waves. #2 Suppresion Field & Broken Symmetry - I always loved the cold, wet, and deserted atmosphere of both tracks. As a kid i had these tracks on my mp3 player and remember how i made a vacation on an old sailing ship in the Netherlands. We had no radar, and strong fog forced us to stay in the harbor of an island in the north sea for several days. It was late autumn, no tourist season, the view was very limited. Some lights of buoys were barely visible on the water. And it felt like an ice breaker, like the Borealis, could enter the harbor at any moment. Also for various other reasons, this moment was the most beautyfull time, i ever had in my entire life. And these Tracks are always a part of that moment. #3 Lab Practicum - In combination with the sounds of a cold and sharp wind, and the train that rattles over your head, Lab Practicum is pure magic. Imo Lab Practicum is the anthem of the Source Engine. It feels naked, bare, even a bit fragile. It feels uncomfortable cold but not especially hostile. Not even human, more like a humming from some kind of an deserted signal station, somewhere distant in the fog. In retroperspective, the cold and bare look of the Source Engine, has the same beauty as Lab practicum. If the Wastelands from the Beta would be ingame, i think Lab Practicum would be also a great track for the moment when Gordon sees the endless wastelands for the first time. #4 Vague Voices- As the BMRF Transit System makes you "fly" through different parts of the facillity, through gigantic halls, over bottemless pits, along heavy machinery, this track adds more life into what we see. It gives the illusion, that far more is going on here, than what we see. We hear echoing alarms, heavy machinery working on metal. It is well balanced, not happy, not threatening, just a busy workday with a serious experimenting waiting. The staff is not too nervous about the experiment, but they show the necessary respect. And this track is very good in transporting this atmosphere to the player.
I think the combination of the set piece, prior gameplay, and meaning makes Hard Fought one of the best action tracks. You are storming a CP checkpoint with rebels and really showing how much the tide has turned even though the fight isnt easy.
this is a movie woah edit: I think it would've been better if you had timestamps for specific tracks because a lot of people will have a song in mind that they want to hear you share your opinion on
@@NottDemo try listening to Dark Matter on 0.5 and Phase Pulse on 2.0 speed on youtube, you'll hear it. If you have some audio editing software, try transposing it by 1 octave and its speed accordingly (as mentioned, by a factor of 2). It's a case of changed RPM.
Great video, just discovered this channel after youtube recommended this video I honestly think that you really should have let the song play out first, then comment on it, coz sometimes your voice is a bit too low compared to the song and vice versa..
my tone of voice changed so much through the recording it was kinda hard to judge the audio balancing at times, i would spend like 5 minutes finding a good balance on a section just to change it again the next day
Great video and respect all opinions, but you are straight up WRONG about the Credits Closing Theme it is a straight up banger and one of my favorite credits themes in a game >:(
if i sounded like i was saying it wasnt good thats my fault, it good dont get me wrong just feels somewhat out of place in half-life, in my opinion atleast
totally real half life fact that is not stole from radioactive happy gorgon freeman Kelly bailey the composer for Half-Life's OST made the music using a plastic chicken and a flute , source : just trust me bro
2:08 as a bass player, this pronunciation pains me.cant get too annoyed, bass having multiple pronunciations just sucks. i feel bad for people having to learn english. epic video tho
The black mesa ost is an absoloute bop
Entropy Zero 2 is basically the Surface Combat Music but for the entire Game.
The Music is fucking Good man you need to listen to it
8:39
This track plays when you enter that room full of explosive barrels with the manhacks in route kanal.
So yes, it is reused.
It's when you see the Alien Grunt for the first time
And also at the Wearhouse full of Traps and sh!t

You are probably getting this from that old ass gman sightings video. That footage is from the beta and the music was edited in.
It fits pretty well during the moment where lamarr jumps on Barney in a red letter day.
5:57 I'm pretty sure it would've played when Lamarr attacks Barney
Will you do a ranking video of the Portal series's ost? It's really good
i probably will at some point, i do enjoy them a lot

43:10 I think thats a Alyx vocal. I honestly don't really know who it is, i heard it in Episode 1.
agreed, if its not a voiceline it must be the same VA or something, it feels weird to hire someone else specifically to say 1 word for a track.
I think Combine Harvester was gonna play in the beta version, where I feel it would fit better
where distorted trumpets
i explain its absence it at the end of the video
Fun fact:
Pulse Phase is a slowed down and pitched down version of Dark Matter.

The Metal songs from the episodes are my favorites
Vortal combat
