How to: Paint your Gamecube Controller Cable

- Update: After about a year most of the plastidip has come off, however, this is with only 1 coat of plastidip, and 1 coat of paint clearcoat. Next time I'm going to try with the official plastidip glossifier, and plenty of coats. This was mostly a test run.
Hey guys, I always thought a white gamecube controller with a red cable would look pretty cool, so I gave it a go! I made a tutorial so the rest of you could do it.

For some awesome bottle openers and keychains: ebay.com/usr/TagWorks.
You'll need:
A triwing screwdriver: Available on Amazon.
Acetone: Home depot sells it.
Plastidip/flexidip of your choice: Available on Amazon or Home Depot (Sometimes).
Clearcoat/gloss finish: Home Depot sells it.
Tape, plastic bag.
If you found that something works better or have a question leave a comment!
Why plastidip?: Normal spray paint seems to just run off, and plastidip WITHOUT the clearcoat just scratches off too easily.
I believe Plastidip sells their own "glossifier" that MAY work better, but I didn't have any on me so I just stuck with normal clear coat. I'll keep this updated on what I find is wrong with the method I used.
Also, sorry for shitty focus. iPhones have a mind of their own.
Dont forget to wear a mask while spray painting :)
Not if you're outdoors, it's not necessary.
It's still objectively safer, even by a slight amount.
yeah you may get a bloody nose from the fumes
Lance Shuler wow that controller is AMAZING
Thank You so much for this tutorial 😊🙏 I’ve just started selling GameCube controllers on Etsy and you’ve just made my shop even better
I'm glad you liked it!
Good lookin video man, keep up the mod videos! Would love to see more in depth stuff.
awesome. very well made video and well explained :)
Great Vid! Thank you! keep being awesome!
I just recently painted my controller and didnt even think about the cable! Over the weekend i'm gonna paint my cable a clean white to match my controllers red shell white buttons theme. thanks for the guide!
+PapaCow I'd love to see how the white comes out! If it doesn't come out as well as you want it, you can always snag the white Smash 4 controller, and swap in the mother board (which is attached to the cable).
TomYoungster How long did that Plastidip last or is it still in perfect shape?
Thanks 😎
Now for the Kirby Controller.
could you do a video controller now or just pictures just want to see how it is holding up
Yes! As I suspected with only 1 coat of clear it started to chip off but most of it remained in tact. I'll do another run with more clear coats and post on here what happens.
I wouldn't put clear coat on it but instead spray some clear plastic dip that they sell onto the cable
You could have just braided it with red paracord. This would make also have the benefit of lasting forever and making the cable tangle-free.
thanks for your help lil dicky
Is the black case at 0:22 a carrying case for GameCube controllers? I'm looking for one.
it's a beats case
How many coats of Clear Coat did you apply? How long does the clear coat have to dry?
Just 1 as a test. And, I don't recall. At least a couple hours, I would say. Probably depends on the clear coat that is used!
how can I remove the paint without damaging the cable? I messed up and wrapped the controller to early, ruining both the cable and the controllers paint. I should of waited like a week :/
+Nissin CupNoodles As far as I know, a little bit of acetone should take it off. Not too much is needed, though!
Seems like dye would work well.
What's your twitch?
twitch.tv/tomyoungster !
Same amount of coats for the clear coat spray or just one?
More coats is always good! I couldn't do more than one coat when filming this, but I would do 3 with small sanding in between, personally.
Jeez, that was a long cord! Where can I get a controller like that?
The newer white Wii-era controllers and all of the Smash branded ones have longer cables
K thanks
Hey, idk if you're still active on your account but, I recently got my controller signed by professional players and wondering how I would go about coating the controller so the sharpie doesn't smudge
Sora KH Good question! I've never had a situation like that, but I would guess a clear coat? Might make it kind of gunky over time but the signature will probably be protected.
TomYoungster So, would I take off the case? And remove the motherboard then?
I would recommend it! Just to make the finish consistent around the entire case.
how does it hold just curious after 5 years
Definitely didn't hold up more than a year or so. I'm sure maintaining it with protective coats would help.
kinda late to the party but hows it holding up is it still good?
+wzrd It's not bad! One clear coat definitely didn't help, but it was a test run. (It's chipping off in small parts.) More coats of clear, and possibly using the plastidip glossifier would help.
Also, what I just found with all of this heat, is that if you leave it in a hot car it will bleed a little bit! Just keep it out of leaving it in the car in a hot day and it shouldn't be a problem.
So did it last?
I never ended up doing a re-spray to see how more coats of clear coat would look. I would say, with many coats, and taking good care of it, it should last PLENTY long.
but with the one coat you did it didnt last long?
I still have a good amount of it, and I would say it lasted ~6-7 months without losing any.
why didnt u just use some red heat shrink tubing? you would have a higher quality and its easier to use :P
+Márquez Caramba 115 inches of heat shrink tubing? how long would that take to heat?!?!?
+Márquez Caramba To be honest I have no experience, and friends of mine with experience told me it wouldn't be worth the effort. Plus, I don't know how easy it would be to make it flush from the plug to the controller. I'll definitely look into it though.
You are fuckin genius. I came here to see how he painted his cord. Seems like a lot work for Ethernet cable, but my alarm company used green Ethernet cabling for the Ethernet. You just saved me so much time, forgot about sleeving.
RTarson lol, thanks :)
Hi. What type of paint is it, have you noticed cracks? Cheers.
Couldn't you just get some paint and paint it without taking everything apart?
David O'Leary no
That would destroy the controller
:eyes:
thats pretty cool but all I heard in my head was hell no nobody got time for dat
Guys, just paracord your controller like a normal person. This will wear off eventually, while paracords are permanent.
you shouldn't wrap controllers. they last longer if u dont
+Cameron Thomas Is there a better way to store it in a small place besides wrapping it? If so I'd love to know.
+TomYoungster You just don't want to repeatedly bend the copper inside. A loose wrap would be better, especially if you don't wrap it around the controller, but just make a loop with the cable.
place 3 fingers on the back of the controller and wrap it, that way it isn't too tight on the part the cable comes out of the controller so it doesn't do that
I can't think of a name [ Name intensifies ] nice. ill try it
Please tell me why the hell people give Kirby sh*t in smash Bros
I know he is low teir but I'll be honest...teirs don't matter to me. A character isn't good it's the person that uses the character. It's like saying a red umbrella is better at blocking the rain than a blue umbrella.
+Ryan Burns Because kirby has horrible to no neutral and combo options and you can mash out of his grab. most of his move are extremely easy to punish aswell. teirs dont matter if you just play with your friends for fun but if you want to play compeditavely at tournaments and stuff you should really try to play as somebody different.
+Ryan Burns because, japan duh.
It's more like saying; "A umbrella without holes in it is better at blocking the rain than an umbrella with holes in it."
poor guy needs to get laid.
+Ahzeem GG You need to use a more original joke.
Say's the person waisting there time commenting on an irrelevant topic.
2 years later,,, didn't you waste your time too? ... shit now im wasting my time
