  • Epilepsy patient Katie Beaver never thought she would see the day where she didn't have a seizure. She was diagnosed when she was 10 years old. For the past two decades, she's had several seizures a day. sometimes up to 30. She recently got a new kind of deep brain stimulation device implanted. She says, so far, the number of seizures has been cut in half. There was even one day where she didn't have a seizure.
"I’m more confident in walking just by myself to the bathroom, to the kitchen, to get some water and not worrying about spilling it or anything like that," she says.
UW Medicine neurological surgeon Dr. Andrew Ko explains the importance of this device when it comes to getting snapshots of brain activity. Ko leads the UW Medicine Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery Program.
