For good AM receptio, an external antenna such as the SV2CZF ferrite rod is needed. It helpts to separate the antenna with a short coax, otherwise the display board will generate a little hash.
Thank you for fine video.....I am about to get my license and looking for a HT ...the more I research the more confused i get...My prime purpose at the moment is a good emergency radio.../this must include weather alerts sent automatically and I think you showed that this does. AM/FM is also important and I see it has this as well. I have a motorhome and while I am traveling if I get hurt or need help quickly and no phone signal in the area I need to depend on the Ham radio....From my searching it appears that with the GPS and I think APRS I can be tracked....I notice some radios getting APRS working is not as easy and as fast as others....Battery options are important also....I hope there are packs that can take AA or 18650 for backups....can a battery bank be plugged into the radio or is the battery charger tray a must? The Icom 51A plus appears to be a good radio.....but I do not know enough yet. I think you might be in Palm Beach area....( i am).....Thanks again....great video
Love your channel. Very informative. Really looking forward to your comparison between the 51a and the Yaesu FT-1DR as I am on the fence between these two radios.
Eric, looking to get my first HT, and have narrowed it down to the Icon ID-52A Plus 2 and the Yaesu FT-2DR? Do you have any thoughts b/w these two models pros/cons that you can share?
Kell Bodholt well they are both neat radios, I think myself I would have the Ft2dr because of APRS built in, plus the option for the camera mic, and pictures received right on the front of the radio, id51 can tether to an app with an optional cable , but.no APRS built in... Ft2dr is touchscreen, id51 not. The audio is way louder on ft2dr than it is on id51 that's why I got rid of the id51
Thanks so much Eric for your impressions. Just ordered the FT-2DR. Lots to learn in the coming weeks ;-) I really enjoy your vids, so thank you for those and look forward to watching more.
Hello everyone I think a have a probleme with my ID51A settings : i can't hear the DTMF sounds or 1750hz tone anymore ! it transmits anyway i've checked with my SDR...Any idea ?
I just got my id-51a plus 2 in the mail today and I must say, I'm rather disappointed in the audio coming out of the speaker. With it turned up all the way on the amature fqs, you can barely hear it with it next to you. If you switch to FM broadcast radio you have to turn it down as to not wake up the neighbors. Anyone else have this issue?
Sam Sure. Ok. If you talk properly into the radio, they will both sound just as good. Icom 51 less expensive with the same features and once you learn it you can know exactly how to operate a 4100, 5100, 31a they are all the same style. Kenwood has their own style, and it is not like the id51 when it comes to programming or menu layout. Kenwood has a color screen, 51 does not. ID51 is capable of all the dstar features and functions. So is the Kenwood but more money. Same price you can buy an id51 and a hotspot, vs the price for the Kenwood. Kenwood speaker is louder than the id51 but I talk to more people on the air with a 51 then the d74 Although d74 is popular too. To me, I think the d74 is a Kenwood radio with dstar, but an id51 is a dstar radio. Both have GPS. Hope this helps.
it shouldn't all newer stuff that run lithium type batteries have a shut off for overcharge or undercharge or unstable charge. the cells themselves can be very unstable if charged improperly or connected improperly. this radio is pretty advanced so I'm sure there is something within the programming for the charge cycles. nothing to worry about if you ask me
I just received my ICOM same exact color and model as this one. Now to learn it up good!

I just got my ID-51A Plus2. this video was extremely useful! Thanks.
Great radio voice. Just ordered a new ID-51A today.

Where can you find the Icom FA-s270e handheld antenna? I've looked every where but, couldn't find it?
I just got one of these thanks for the timeless tips
Hi There HamRadioConcepts :-)
Hey Whats the newest top Replacement 2017 for this great 2014 Limited edition Radio?
Thank You,
Looks like a great radio, and thanks for the review...For my first HT I think I should go with something a little less advanced?
I have the ID51a original. How would you compare the Broadcast Radio to the Broadcast radio on the FT-2DR?
Love your channel. Very informative. Really looking forward to your comparison between the 51a and the Yaesu FT-1DR as I am on the fence between these two radios.
What did you go with?
My ID-51a isn't showing the compass information for people I am talking to. How do I fix that?

Kell Bodholt which digital mode is more popular in your area? Dstar or Fusion?
Have both Dstar and Fusion, located in Spokane, WA. Per Repeaterbook, have 7 Fusion/WiresX repeaters and 3 Dstar, w/in 25 miles of my zip (2m & 70cm).
Thoughts?

hello can u help me decide on a radio? either the icom id51 plus2 OR the kenwood thd74a?

HamRadioConcepts wow thanks for the in depth answer iv never had a dstar radio so was lookin to get into it I do have my id ect..
I'm considering buying one of these. Your video is a nice overview of this radio, thank you for posting it. 73 W9SPY
Excellent video...thanks!
Hello: Have you ever tried setting up D-prs on the ID-51? Perchance another video?

Will you damage your battery if you leave the radio in the charger full time?

Can you transmit on the air band with this?
no
+HamRadioConcepts Oh, useless to me then as a pilot
You should buy a Lelo Soraya that would be more useful for you.
+roadwarrior1981 I see you have a used one for sale on eBay...
icom makes a handheld radio for airband pilots
Adding shell colours to this radio gives it a cheap baofeng look.
white balance
Great job, it helps a lot, thank you. Edwin hb9zap
tellement c'est mauvais il y en a pas un qui ose mettre le son de id51
