After my Ancestry DNA results ( • Ancestry DNA Results |... ), revealed that my grandpa is actually part Indian, not Portuguese as he was told when growing up during the British Raj, my grandpa took the DNA test to find out more about who his mother really was.

Very interesting results. As an American, if you did not tell me where your grandfather was from, I would have assumed that he was from India after he spoke for a few minutes. His accent to me seems so much like an English speaker from India.

It was common for British soldiers to marry/ have relations with Indian women during the Raj. It created a mixed class called Anglo-Indians. Alot of Goans try to pass themselves off as Anglo-Indians.

I think what Jan was saying is that there are many Indian Christians who passed themselves off as Anglo Indians. And many of their names were taken from old Raj era grave yards.
I thought Goa was a Portuguese colony? There are over 25,000 Goans on my doorstep (I can't get out of the house!!) and they have Portuguese names. They are living in Britain on Portuguese passports. They are a lot darker than Grandpa here.
Yes Goa was a Portuguese colony and Goans are Indian people, some might be mixed with Portuguese, but the Indian side is always more evident, stronger gene.

Actually his Mom might have told the truth. She could be Goan (so she gets Dravidian and Gujrati) and be catholic or native Christian (Christianity arrived in India ~100 AD). A lot of conversion happened in Goa.
The fucked up part is: Portuguese targeted these Christians a lot (as that Church wasn't Catholic or Orthodox).

It is really crazy to think how phenotypically strong my Asian genes must be despite being such a small portion of me, but I guess they may be amplified by my Italian genes too. Not from Asia though, but I think your Indian genes have crossed really well and gave you such a distinct facial structure. At a first glace, it felt like you've good genes makeup at least by the facial structure. I don't know about the other stuffs and not so preeminent Indian records...Lol

Ahh, you and me both. I feel like he was kind of robbed of his rich culture. Still, by pretending to be Portuguese (whether for her own gain or not) I think his mother probably saved him from a lot of the social injustices of the time. He had a pretty charmed upbringing. Thank you for watching :)
I agree that there was a trade off. But I have family members who 'passed' and they said they always felt like they weren't being themselves. They couldn't go to the communities their families lived in or be around their families or risk being exposed. My dad was telling me about their aunt who was a bit of a rebel. She looked white but would come and get him and his sister and take them to the zoo on days when blacks were not allowed and was the first black woman to work as a typist/secretary for the city (though they didn't know she was black).

Can you blame anyone though, it's the same reason people immigrate, people blame them and say stay and make the country you live in better, sure it'seasy to say that from the outside, living it is a different matter, given the choice he'll yea I would lie, who the hell wants to live being treated like a second class citizen, going to terrible schools, having terrible hospitals etc. Its easy to say that now I'm 2017 when the situation is much different.

My ex girlfriend was from Goa and would constantly refer to herself as portugese despite looking absolutely nothing like a Portugese woman. To me, it seemed that because of colonialisation a lot of people from that region were keen to have European ancestry despite not having any.

I think in Dutch language it means citizen, but in Sri Lanka the descendents of europeans are called like that. Its a very small percentage, but they do have distinct cultures in terms of food and names. I understand they are all mixed up by now, but they have the legacy of their European ancestors. Is it something bad for them to say?
She might have been referring to her nationality. In some regions of India, people can choose to have a Portuguese passport.

His father was British. You can be 50% Indian and 40% Dravidian. Of course, just because his father had British citizenship and was born in Britain doesn't mean his father was 100% British. I'm British, but my DNA is mixed up. It's pretty rare to find a Brit that is more than 50% genetically British. We're all British, Irish, German, French, Scandinavian etc... My family tree places nearly all of my ancestors born in England for the last 20+ generation, except for one Great-Grandmother from Syria. But even accounting for her, my genetics aren't very English. British, Irish, Western European, Scandinavian etc... I'm expect most nationalities populations are regionally mixed as well. The point being that even with a British father, it would make sense that he didn't have much British genetics. Western European aka Anglo-Saxon tribes and Scandinavian and Danes and the such are all mixed into British genetics. Welsh, Irish and Scottish often like to think they're "pure" but labs show they're not "pure" either. Genetics overlap regionally and that's how you have things like Indian and Dravidian at the same time.

These aren't races. These are just ethnic groups and because no society is static, no one is going to get these DNA tests and find they are 100% something. To be 100% one ethnicity is to be inbred. It's not destructive because not one person can take this test and be 100% anything. These tests are living proof that we are all part of one race.

+Alejandra Soprano it was during the British Raj when the Brits ruled India and had formed a society where natives were looked down upon and mixed race people were at risk of being rejected by both the Brits and the Indians, especially because they didn't fit into the structured caste system. Of course there would have been exceptions but it wasn't an ideal situation to be in. We'll never know the full story, but she maybe did it to be able to marry my British great grandfather for love, or to better her own standing in society as well as her future children's. Still, probably tough to hear when you're in your 70s!

First of all sign in with your account and password, second when you're on the main page scroll down to a section that says ''Analyze Your Data'' then click on Admixture ( heritage ) then it should link you to a page that says ''Admixture Utilities'' then there should be a little box saying ''Select the project'' then select the one that says ''Eurogenes'' you have to select that even if you're not fully European to get the end result of your autosomal test then after that where it says ''Select how you want to process it'' click the first circle at the side to select the ''Admixture Proportions (With link to Oracle)'' then click on the ''Click here to continue:'' button then afterwards select your kit number ( I assume you already have that ) then obviously wait a second to let it run
The end result should look like that as you can see South Indian should show up even if you have it in small or high proportions

I have to tell you, I live right by a very Indian neighborhood in Chicago. When the video popped up with your Grandfather-what a shock! He could walk through the Indian neighborhood and every single person there would think he is Indian! He looks profoundly Indian-just like the average, middle class Indian American men I see on almost a daily basis. Amazing how strong it comes out in him. i think Anglo-Indian is a wonderfully fascinating combo. Absolutely something to be proud of and both cultures are inextricably intertwined in history...there is even some delicious overlap (curry). These are 2 cultures that are utterly rich and full of the grandest achievements that any indivdual could want to be associated with by blood or otherwise.

My mom was Goan and my dad's Indian but his family is very light skinned with light curly hair, in fact my grandpa looked a lot like yours!! and my dad says they have some British in them, but I'm not really sure so the DNA test would be super helpful!! People are always confused where me and my bro are from because of the whole mix so now I really want to know our ancestry!!

The most logical explanation is that her grandfather's mother belonged to a family of local Christians in Goa. The Portuguese mixed with the locals and brought them Christianity and their language.
So she might well have felt Portuguese and spoken Portuguese, but have still carried these Dravidian genes.
She could also have had some small percentage of Portuguese ancestry herself.

You got to keep in mind that your DNA could pass down anything, that's why even siblings will have things that are like 50% Irish but the other could be only 10% .

Truthfully, when I first saw your grandfather I thought to myself of course he's Indian. Reminds me of my friend's grandad and he's full Indian, or so we think. Actually they could pass as twins only the skin tone is different.
I feel sad that he didn't know his true heritage until now, like he has missed out on it.
Similar story here, my mum was born in India and told she was British with some Portuguese. I recently did my dna and what do you know 20% Indian, my mum has also struggled to get her head around this. From my research it seems my grandfather (her dad) was around 80% Indian but was either told (or lied) that he was English/Portuguese. Since researching this myself it appears to have been a common story for Anglo Indians to say this, it’s terribly sad but a result of colonialism. I’m now trying to learn more about this part of me 😊

I was told my whole life that on my mum's side, my great-grandfather was British and there was some Portuguese in there somewhere. My family was in India at the time of the British Raj. Looking at photos of my relatives and even looking at my grandmother and my mum and her sisters, something is just way off.
My great-grandfather was so dark, my grandmother is dark and my mum and aunts look definitely mixed (dark hair, dark eyes, olive skin). One of my cousins has had health issues and the doctor who was taking care of him was talking about how his blood type originates from India/Pakistan regions. I reaaaaaally want to buy my mum a DNA kit now because I suspect the lie is HUGE! Lots has been hidden!!!
Sounds like my family! I didn't see a single photo of my gg until my grandparents moved house a few years ago and we found an old box of photos. That's when I realised Portuguese probably wasn't the whole story... Definitely get the test, it's honestly so great knowing where my family is really from, especially if you're like me and get constantly asked. Keep me updated if you do! :)

This was lovely to watch, I'm Indian (Anglo-Indian + Goan), with British-Somali great grandparents. Just doing some research before I get a DNA test done. Your grandpa is adorable, and grandmum too, he definitely looks Goan, my dad is Goan has similar colour and features.

I dunno if you've ever looked into Anglo-Indian history from the British Raj but it is so fascinating, I'd definitely recommend you reading up on it if you haven't already. My dad's side is Anglo (mum as Catholic Indian as they come lol) and your grandad looks a lot like them haha. But I think it's so interesting that you did these videos. I've noticed that Indians are really diverse concerning their looks. I've seen very pale Indians and really dark ones. Is the "Indian DNA" common for all of them, or are there various ethnic groups within India?
Most probably a mix. I think the hierarchy was based on colour too.

Hi to the Author of this post…I saw you video about you and there is high possibility for Edith Margaret to be Gujrati and you thinking her origin previously to be Portuguese Goan. Understand that Portuguese/British raj was in India for 500 years and Goa-daman-Diu(Places in Gujrat) we’re always considered together in political matters. It’s likely she was either from Daman or Diu. Many people reverted back to the original religion and family name in Goa-Daman and Diu.

I have watched so many videos where people find out about their ancestry. It's always fascinating to see how they react! I would love to do the test myself but unfortunately it is not offered in Germany -.-
Maigodseki there are websites that send you a kit to give them your DNA with, and you send it back to them and they give your results. Cost about 100USD
yes, I know but Germany has very strict laws concerning DNA tests. The only test available costs around 600 Euro, I guess these are 500$... That's a little bit to much for me.
If you travel outside the country perhaps you can plan ahead and mail one to yourself at the hotel. LOL>

Mostly European mix of eastern and western mainly I think, bit of Irish. Possibly a very small amount of African or Native American as my Great Great Gran moved over from the US to the UK in the 1890's and was mixed race from South America. Who knows though lol. :D Very exciting to have the technology to do this. :)

Thats interesting.my parents are from belize in the caribbean and my dad is latino and british since british ruled belize for the past several hundred years.my moms great grandparents came from india about 100years ago and they were mixed with British since my moms mother had the name sewell and they are lighter skinned.then i have two cousins that marrried british soldiers and left for britain over 25years ago.intermarrriage with the british and locals happens much more than we know.i looked latino with redish hair as a kid but i look more indian now but my sisters look latino with light skin or they are hard to identify.we are more mixed than we know.but i am proud of my english,indian and latino heritage because each has made me what i am to an extent because those genes have influenced me mentally,physically ,emotionally and intellectually and i have things to be proud of from each.
This reminds me of the saga of Merle Oberon. She hid her Indian roots and passed her mother off as her maid to pursue a career in Hollywood. Perhaps it was the mother's idea. It turns out that there was another layer to the lie and the mother was actually her grandmother; and she grew up thinking that her mother was her sister.

This is really cool. My family is also Anglo Indian (we always knew it) and my test also came up with 19% Native American. I believe this came from a separate source as there was talk of a Native American ancestor in the family. You can definitely see from looking at you and your Grandad that there is a strong Indian heritage. I had my test done almost 10 years ago now, so the groups were more limited and India was grouped in with both Western and Eastern Europe. I am really looking forward to getting a new test done to define the results a bit.
+Rachel Rachel wow, 19% would suggest a very recent ancestor (grandparent being almost full NA). I wonder if it's actually linked to East Asian as the genes are apparently similar. Would love to know your results if you got a new test done!

I took a My Heritage DNA test and I got English 53% Azores Islands Portugal 26.4 % Irish Scottish Welsh 8.9 % Scandinavian 7.6 % East European 4.1 % I am 48 years old and I just met my dad. My dad's grandparents are 100% Azores Islands Portugal.

Where is that DNA Land chart found? I've never seen that before, nor in my own Ancestry results.
Me too, it's cool to finally have it confirmed though! DNALand.com is a separate website, so you download your raw dna data from ancestry, then upload it to dna land. Scientists get to study your (anonymous) genes and you get to find out more about your ancestry :) there's another one called Gedmatch which has a lot more info but is a lot more difficult to interpret.

There may have been a lot of secrets like that during the Raj. I think your grandpa might have been more than a little bit shocked to learn he is nearly half Indian. His mother may have been adopted by a British family in order to blend in so well, or your grandpa might have been exposed to the very close family ties that his mother would have otherwise have had.
It is so obvious that your grandfather is Indian just by looking at him. You even look Indian yourself.

I am an American living in India, & my husband is south indian. our son is basically eurasian... our surname is from Cambodia (which explains your grandpa's polynesia result.... lots of migration has happened here!). South indians speak Dravidian languages... my husband knows telugu, tamil & kannada.
I also have a "Portugese" grandmother (the rumor is that she is Lanape... but on paper she's German and Irish!! & Ukrainian grandma called her Portugese bc of her black thick hair lol) I can't wait to return to the US so i can order this test.

Generally speaking, from those I've spoken to in the UK (and I get the "but what are you?!" question at least twice a week), whites think I'm Asian and Asians think I'm Arabic or white (perhaps harder to believe, but I've been accused of wearing too much fake tan when in reality I don't wear any... 😂). The only place I feel like I really fit in is with Italians as I think I share their features and colour more, but then I'm still an outsider culturally 😔 You'll have to do a video when you manage to do a test! Having been born in the Indian Raj myself of an Irish Mother and English Father and done a lot of research it was quite common at the time of the East India Company for there to be mixed marriages between employees of the company and high cast Indian women. In fact it was encouraged to stop the single young single men from feeling homesick and wanting to return home1

The thing about Portuguese DNA is that is really difficult to have pure iberic blood because Portugal had a lot of different tribes coming from all over the world and so we're just a big mix! I saw one true Portuguese doing this and he only had 5% iberic DNA

My wife was 0.3% Indian DNA,she was so surprised..................I told its her English ancestry during time of empire, the young single Englishmen came home with Indian wives...........Had a couple kids and then over time, generation after generation it was forgotten..........But the blood remains,although watered down..........:) I don't have any Indian dna,and I have more British DNA than she does.............:)

Wow super cute video! It looks like your Great Grandma was Indian because your Grandpa is half Indian. That makes you 1/8 Indian :) Since you are 1/3 British, and your grandpa is barley 2%, then you get all the British from your other grandparents. Very interesting analysis!
