Dude! You`ve totally gone up in my estimation. Any elderly lady would be proud to have you as a grandson!!! You treated May with absolute respect. You really are a sweet guy. Good for you!
I love these local shops. They're a real slice of history. It's remarkable that they keep running, but I'm so glad they do. May seems like such a lovely lady, too!
I agree. I grew up with my parents small businesses and had my own. Sometimes I wish I could have another, but it’s changed too much (here in US anyway). I was very surprised at how reasonable ALL of those items were! I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but I sure did! A nice pair of socks at the hiking store here are $30+ alone.
@@cumberlandquiltchic1I noticed how inexpensive it was especially for an out of the way market. I like to shop my local markets too. It's a reminder of my childhood when I had pennies in my pocket to buy candy. Back then you could get 3 Tootsie Rolls for a penny & a quarter bought me a whole bag of sweets for the 4 of us kids to share. For a dollar you could buy a big bottle of soda & a bag of frosted animal cookies, then head to the creek to catch pollywogs. I think we had more fun and more adventures than kids playing video games.
I don't know when Grocery Stores' started having feelings, but this is a wonderful find of a video nonetheless. I hope May's business is able to reap the rewards. May and the owners of small shops like this are a dying breed. Until a few years ago Morpeth, in Northumberland, had a store over 3 floors run by an older lady. She could tell you on which floor, aisle, shelf, anything you wanted to buy could be found. Everything from furniture to hardware to cleaning products to tools large and small could be found there as well as small household items. Miss Smail was a remarkable woman. Long live May and her Hebden emporium!
What a fantastic video! You and the camera man are so courteous and respectful and it's clear you were genuinely interested in the store and it's history. You really made their day. It was definitely worth the trip. Thanks so much for doing this. Cheers from Ontario Canada.
Yorkshire Parkin is a gingerbread type cake made with oats (oatmeal). I found it interesting because I had just discovered different kinds of gingerbread recipes on RUclips but none with oatmeal, an ingredient I love using in my baking. Now, I have found the gingerbread recipe of my dreams just in time for the holidays. Thanks, Harrison! 😊
As an American (Montana), the chicken in the road does not distress me. I'm glad it wasn't a moose, or a bear. The oncoming traffic consistently in my "lane" (is it even a lane if there's only one of them???) definitely freaks me out to this day, and I've lived in Wales for 21 years lol Glad youtube recommended your video, very amusing and interesting!
Ahh the good ole days, I remember shops like this here in the states back in the 60’s. May was delightful and so was her daughter (?), if I’m ever out that way… Thanks Harrison👍💕
Absolute cracking video, the contrast between you and May, the old style shop, Northern treats, the "spatula" that would melt on contact with meat lol, all of it top tier. You should go back and do a b&b stay there and maybe film a Northern cookery show with May.
I really Loved this wholesome video!! It makes me want to live on the country side as well and be apart of a tight-nit community. I'm sure your visit brought alot of joy to those ladies. I cant wait to see what other adventures you come upon. Your videos really do make my day. Thanks so much!💛
Thank you for being so respectful of May! I lived in that neck of the woods (Yorkshire-ism there) for 30 years until I escaped to The Smoke. Southerners are always terrified of the roads around the Calder Valley - the livestock not so much, you wuss!! A glorious video, I’m off to check out your others.
Found your channel about a week back and it's brilliant. I lived in Yorkshire for about 5 years- May is an exact replica of my mum.. her misunderstanding of your humour is priceless. Also- reaction to chicken in the road.. gold. My wife is from London and would have reacted the same way. Keep them coming
I hope someone buy on their store the lady they are so precious and they remind me of my grandma. I hope and pray they will have more costumers to come.❤
LOVE THE SHOP AND THE LADIES ARE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL !!! GOD BLESS THEM !!! HUGS, FROM SOUTH AFRICA !!! WE HAVE MANY FARM-STALLS LIKE THEIRS IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Hello Harrison from Cape Coral, FL. U.S.A. I absolutely LOVED this video! Clean, Fun, From the Heart and Content that is just downright entertaining!! May was a real Hoot and we LOVED her and how she had everything, and MORE LOL, except the tent! My wife and I visited London in Feb. of 1991 and had a smashing good time!! We met a lovely couple from a village near London while cruising in 2016 or 2017 and we all had a great time together. I HOPE to see more entertaining video's like this from you so we're waiting! Thanks again!
Aww. You were so nice! A lovely heart warming video. Thank you. I think I’ve been there in 1997. On the Pennine Way when I was walking it. It’s all a bit hazy. I first had a sticky Parkin from a van on the Pennine Way. I asked the guy behind the counter what it was. He’d obviously encountered a lot of foolish questions in his usual day. It said; it’s sticky and it’s a Parkin. I said that sounds ideal! One of them and a cup of tea. He said good answer. So I went up in his estimation from total idiot to just idiot.
Yessssss!!!!! Your content is always so interesting!!!!! Spend a night in Tan Hill Inn next time please! I haven't been so wanted to see what it is like!
I visited a year or two back , bought everything that was locally sourced as that's what places like this need you to do. So glad you got such a buzz 👍
I grew up just around the corner from here. It makes me remember the good old days. People don’t know what Parkin or parched peas (black peas) are where I live now and it makes me miss where I’m from.
I live in Norway and I have to say she has the most beautiful view right outside her shop. Reminds me of the little local store from when I was a kid up at my family's cabin. He had been there for over 80 years. His father started it and he took over when he passed but none of his kids wanted to work there so when he passed it got shut down unfortunately which is very sad.
Seriously, this must be the coziest grocery store I've ever seen. I'd love to go and shop there daily, have a little chat with the owner, maybe sit outside on a small table and have a beer..
These are the moments that make life enjoyable. God I wish the world was like this. Truly wish them all the best and hope this video brings them more of these wonderful moments and boosts business. Bless you all. Love life people be wholesome and humble at all times and make this world great again.
May needs to meet Elsie, the mayor/bar owner/sole resident etc. of the smallest town in Nebraska, population 1, Monowi. I bet they’d have stories to tell.
I had to look up Yorkshire Parkin. I found: The year was 1728. Banging his gavel, the magistrate of the West Riding Quarter Session called the courthouse to order. The accused was brought forward. Standing erect in a pose of dignified capitulation, Mrs. Anne Whittaker, occupation housewife, listened as her offense was read aloud. The crime: She had stolen oatmeal. Her defense: Why, to make Yorkshire parkin, of course. The verdict: Guilty as charged but dang, was the parkin worth it! True story. And that was one of the first ever published references to Yorkshire parkin, the crime of theft, of culinary passion, all in the name of this centuries-old cake. 🤷♀️😊 found it at daring gourmet lol Love this little store and the owner! Good for her! 😀
I live in Sowerby Bridge which is about 2 or 3 miles from Hebden Bridge, can't believe I didn't know about this, I'll have to go visit soon. Thanks Harrison!
Omg! i love this kind of vlog. Just found your channel and i loved it! also i really like how peaceful the place is. That place is for me i wish i could live there 😅
I love places like this, reminds me of my grandmother's craft store. she set up a craft store in a house like this and I spent many childhood years there
I knew it, my stomping ground. It made me laugh, the starter clip. I understand...im a kick butt driver because of these roads though. Lol. There are loads of farm shops up this way. A lot have cafes attached to them. This is just a local shop which is owned by a family. Parkin, you have to heat it up and put warm custard on...the best way!
The trip up the mountain was well worth it to spend time with these two gracious ladies in their little store (with surveillance so no one gets out there😉). The answer to that question directed to the chicken on the road. It's to get to the other side, as all chickens know. It's the humans that overthink it.
We need more local shops! Makes them unique! Screw the big corporations! Having mom & pop shops needs to come back. It gives it uniqueness & diversity. So when you need something, & its not in one store, you go to multiple stores. So you interact with more people.
