    There's one very intersting thing: if you take the very first phrase of the song - "You're gonna lose that girl", take it exactly one tone higher and in slower tempo, you'll get exact - NOTE FOR NOTE! - melody of the beginning of A Day In The Life, where the words are "I read the news today..." Unbelievable? Check it yourselves! Funnily, that the word "lose" get exactly on the word "news"... I think that Lennon not only liked to play with words but also with melodies...

    • @ordjk4797
      @ordjk4797 10 месяцев назад +4

      Good point however I think the conclusion you drew is incorrect. I think he didn’t “play” around with melodies, rather his brain had specific melodic structures that came to him. In other words it’s just a serendipitous coincidence.

    A favourite. It is worth saying that John's terrific singing and the backup vocals are what really make the song.

      If I had a favourite, of so many this would be it. Can't validate the why other than je ne sais quoi. Worth mentioning I was around and listening at the time of its original release in 1965. In fact from the very beginning of their fame with in 1962 "Love Me Do" through until the breakup in '69. Lucky me. I love playing it too, all parts. Easy but perfect solo for the song, just fantastic harmony, and John's lead vocal on a par with the epic "Twist and Shout" of the original on the "Please Please Me" album.

Funny I was just channeling this song listening to Help in my car and thought I you had taught me already but then today it see it for the first time. The Beatle universe is working overtime. You and your channel are one of my favorite channels on RUclips. Retired and 66, I never thought I would be playing so much guitar and never the Beatles. Who needs golf. Such joy! I grew up with these songs in the early 60's and all these years later they're still as fresh and hook filled as in 1965. The amount of music that the Beatles could stuff into a 3-minute song is genius. The little George Harrison solo is so simple and innocent yet so perfect. It wasn't just the songwriting that was stellar it was the whole arrangement even with those goofy tempo and pitch variations. Diamonds in the rough. Thanks for this wonderful breakdown of an early Beatles gem.

    Hi Mike! I've really enjoyed watching your videos because at 68, I was there! I'll do this quickly: Ed Sullivan show, bought cheap $5.00 guitar, asked dad for lessons, got a real acoustic and started lessons but got fed up with learning Camptown Races and wanted to play chords so I could sing off the record. My guitar teacher played If I Fell one day and I almost fell over in my chair. To a kid who loved the Beatles, it was exactly like the record. Goodbye Alfred guitar books (except for the chord charts.)
    Got my dad to buy me a Vox Shadow. Piece of crap! Big difference between the mechanical prowess of Britain and Germany. Summer of '65 my friend and I staged a Bay Street Beatles concert on our block ala Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney "Hey kids, let's do a show." All the neighborhood kids came in his basement. Man, the screaming was great. I managed to recreate Beatlemania for a ten year old kid.
    In '82 I was in the studio in L.A. working on an EP. I even did a Ticket to Ride cover. You know, I'd like to swap stories with you but this isn't the place. Let me know if you'd like to chat. Take care.

      If I Fell, yes! The intro to it is the most beautiful, intricate, genious and camouflaged walk into the main key done in pop music. If someone says otherwise I will hit them on the head with my early Korean-built Sigma acoustic. You'd either have to survive a five-minute intro by Yes, or wait until Elvis Costello, XTC or Radiohead to hear progressions just trying to get close to that intro. It is the ultimate proof that you don't have to have explicit knowledge about music theory to compose exceptional music. You'd have to have the raw talent of Mister Lenmccartsonstarr, though.

    One of the interesting aspects of the evolution of the Beatles' sound throughout their history is the fact that, for me, at least, as time went on, the sound of the Beatles became predominantly the sound of McCartney's voice, in its many forms - Hey Jude, Helter Skelter, Lady Madonna, Long Tall Sally ,Golden Slumbers, Back in the U.S.S. R....- McCartney was, in my opinion, the best pop/rock vocalist of all time - he was the one guy you would choose if you were starting a band and you could only have one lead singer. But in the early days - and I was about 12 when the Beatles arrived on the scene so i was paying attention - the dominant sound of the band was Lennon's voice - Please Please Me, Twist and Shout, Hard Days Night, From Me to You, Ticket to Ride, Help, etc. and while he was not as versatile, perhaps, as Paul, he was great - absolutely recognizable, unmistakable and brilliant. Somewhere along the way, Lennon stopped sounding like he did on this song and adopted the softer sound of Julia, Dear Prudence, Sexy Sadie and others. But Lennon's powerful vocals established the Beatles' sound and great as our friend Mike is, he cannot match them because nobody could. Nobody....

    • @flythething193
      @flythething193 2 года назад +1

      Interesting points! I also think Lennon sang in a more powerful way in the earlier phase. Really like the covers on With the Beatles. Another funny thing is that on many live reordings Lennons vocals are dominating on She loves you, despite Paul is singing the upper harmony.

    I've always enjoyed Lennon's fiction writing in his lyrics. I'm sure in the 1961 era, he didn't 'win' every girl around but for years later, he'd write about losing girls and his heartbreak over no-reply's and seeing others holding hands, but he was able to be imaginative - fictional - in sooo many songs. Then, he'd pull out a circus poster and his son would talk about a schoolmate's drawing... or he'd simply open up the newspaper and about a car crash.

    Excellent job. As you said, on John's rhythm part just have fun and play freely. That's what John did. Practiced irrelevance on rhythm guitar was his thing. You wanna sound like John on rhythm? Treat your guitar as though you don't especially like it. You may not really hear his guitar on the song, but that's why The Beatles songs were fuller than everyone else's. Take it out and there would be a difference. That's why they would use 3 pianos on a song when one would do. And yes, Ringo's bongos were frantic, weren't they?

    That was effing brilliant! I’ve watched you off and on but now I’m hooked.
    At 70, I have been nothing if not a complete ZBeatles freak. I’ve dabble in guitar
    and bass for ever but kind of drift away. I just never found someone on you tube
    that got me pumping. I think it’s now time to get serious. Thanks for an incredible
    amount of work you put in.

    I came for the guitar lesson, but was blown away by the bass playing and sound in the finished product.

    Mike another great lesson, I really enjoy (and admire) the way you dissect these songs.
    I notice that you appear to play the bass left handed - do you really or do you transpose the video?

    Hi Mike, please could you do a tutorial for Revolution. BTW my son, Jude, aged 7 loves your videos and you have helped him be very good at the guitar already and he is only 7! Keep up the good work and thank you
