  • We don't often think about the process of getting on a bike, but today that's what we're doing. Known as mounting, this skill is likely the first thing you'll learn after figuring out how to balance. Enjoy this two minute discussion on mounting, and let me know which technique you prefer.

normally I throw the bike in the air, then do a double backflip to land on the bike. it takes a little practise but does use the least energy and is also the quickest.

I like the one best, where I almost lose my balance getting my leg up, then getting my pants stuck on the saddle while already starting to roll downhill with all my weight on the bars, coming up to an obstacle and bottoming out my fork before going over the bars with my pants still attached to my saddle before landing flat on my back in my underwear next to a busy street.

TBH on the poll I selected the 70% method... But, thinking about it now... out on the trail - it depends a lot on the terrain i.e. uphill, flat, downhill, smooth, techy, gnarly, tight etc. Plus, it can be different if riding solo or with a group ^^
I'm thinking 70% the time I use the foot on & swing. The rest of the time, I'll use whatever works best given the situation.

I do the beginner thing or the swing one. Wouldn't call the beginner one unstable though, it gives you plenty of time to mounth the other foot, which is usefull especially when starting in the middle of going uphill. Jumping onto the saddle looks like it might hurt my balls eventually, so no thanks.

You dismount your front wheel, hang it on your back, start with a wheelie, and then when you have enough speed... roll your front wheel on the floor... and then catch it with your forks perfectly. That is called perfect mounting. That is how Mr. Colnago wanted us to mount our bikes.

Here in Mexico, the step'n'swing is usually referred to as "de panadero". A panadero is a baker, and some of them cruise around with a bike or trycicle with a huge basket of pastries and sell coffee and stuff. Those guys are hardcore, riding across cities multiple times a day on super heavy vehicles carrying a truckload of delicious pastries they're not allowed to eat xD Anyway, they all use that technique.
I personally tend to do the first one you mentioned, as I usually get on the bike, set up strava or runtastic, put my phone in my backpack and then get going. It's just easier to sit on the bike while doing that than holding it or having to lean it on something and then get it back after starting the gps.

Watching this made me realize how awkward my mounting technique is. I do a hybrid of the first and last one where I swing my leg over the tube to clear it but land directly on the raised pedal push it down and then get the rest of my body up with the momentum of the movement. Gotta try some different techniques. Haven't ever noticed that.

Lately, I like to mount my bike by laying next to it on the ground, staring up at the sky, and think about all the hours I've put into my videos so people can post comments that I sound like Ethan from h3h3.

No one else will admit it, but I will. I am the LAST person to remount my bike...EVERY time. Slow as crap. My right hip is a little stiff from years of pounding golf balls, so that's always slowed me down, but I've never given it much thought. I'm going to have to try the "step and swing" method...or whatever the predominant method was anyway, and see if that helps.
Maybe I'll be the only person who gets anything out of this, but that's fine. I dig it.
I have an idea for a video while you're injured. "How to wash your bike at a spray car wash to get it clean after a muddy ride, without doing damage to it." I've heard conflicting reports from..."Yeah, I do it all the time, I'm just careful not to spray from a close distance, and not to spray directly into any critical components," to..."Never do that, ever." And this has come from long time shop owners, and mechanics, so I truly do wonder if it's a viable way to at least get your bike "mostly" clean while it's still on the rack after a ride, before everything has dried to a crisp.

I have hip and knee issues. I have to mount my bike by leaning it towards me and then swinging my leg over the rear wheel and then the saddle onto the pedal. Same when I dismount but opposite direction.

In the past, I would drop the bike to the side and hoist a leg over. I have been dealing with sciatica for over 10 years, and with the new found e bikes, I want to ride again. The difficulty was test riding bikes. I was trying to do stretching to be able to be a dog pissing on a fire-hydrant. I have limited mobility now because of the inactivity as well as added weight. I think with mounting the bike this way, I can test ride bikes now. Thank you for sharing something that seems simplistic.

I am a commuter mostly and I actually do the dorky downtube thing most often. During winter nights there's so much stuff to get ready anyway. Helmet, face cover, gloves, jacket, lights etc. The easiest way to get all that done is to stand over the bike.

  • @freerangemtb

I swing my foot over, put it on the pedal and use my other foot to push off (your method described right before describing the method you prefer). If I'm being completely honest, though...I use a curb whenever I can. I'm getting older, and my balance with swinging my legs over the seat just isn't what it used to be. I'm not sure I have ever tried that last method. Maybe I'll give that a go.
I hope your arm is healing well, dude! Stay upright and keep the rubber side down.
    -Brian

    • @FreeUpTheWeed
      @FreeUpTheWeed 6 лет назад +8

      Goriaas No
toe clips are toe clips, clipless is a stupid name that should be forgotten.
Toeclipless would make more sense in the literal explanation, but (my generation at least) doesn’t call toe clips “clips”.
Heck, you don’t even clip into toe clips.
You flip the pedal then fricken slip in
Slipless makes more sense than clipless

Lol, I was out riding, trying to figure out what I should do for a video and it hit me, "How to get on a bike." So I went and found a spot and made the video and I'm just about to edit it and I'm thinking, nobody needs this useless information. Then I figured I should check to see if any videos were already posted and long story short, yours is the first to pop up. If it's a good enough topic for you, it's good enough for me.. After all, not to sound all, you know, "that way" it was Seth's bike hacks that inspired me to start my channel in the first place✌️✌️

I do the one right before your favorite method. Where you lean the bike down to get your foot on the outside pedal, once your foot is on I can easily push off and get going :) just easy for me since I can't swing my legs high from my bulging disk in my back. But I still ride a bike daily to class 3 miles, and weekends go mountain bike on my diamondback hook (thanks to your vids I picked up a used one for $350)
