Alberto Mielgo was initially hired by Sony to become the Production Designer/Art Director for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and was also contracted to direct “the animation test”. Many of his concepts and shots end up in the movie.
You're leaving out the most important part, they fired him for not being a Yes Man, but they kept all his work and that's everything that's been used in the movie and made it what it was.
Amazing film, stunning artwork. I saw all five nominees, and this was my first choice for the Oscar. Congratulations!
How inspiring to see film makers with such conviction to entertain through a unique style, a true master piece of entertainment, ready to watch the feature now. Congratulations to all involved, history in the making!

Orgullo
Can someone please translate, what he said in Spanish!???
He was asked to explain the technique used for THE WINDSHIELD WIPER. A rough transcription: "The technique mixes 2D and 3D, and is very inspired by impressionist painting, which I love. Impressionism allows you to understand the image because it removes elements that "realism" or "hyperrealism" have but which the imagination doesn't actually need. For example, the lights here are bright and my eyes are half-closed, but I can still more-or-less make you and the others in the audience out and that's sufficient. And so, this was the principal premise of the technique, to take out unnecessary elements and let the imagintion be stronger. We worked together a lot on the lighting, color, the characters, their textures, and so on."
