How many GCN presenters do you think it would have taken to beat Fred?
hanks dad on an ebike
Full TT team, with all bar 1 allowed to drop out anytime before the top of the final climb, then you might win. But very doubtful
James by himself. Ask him to give it a go.
This was filmed at the start of December just after Fred’s annual break and before the 1st training camp. He was not in peak form. And notice how he could talk in full sentences deep into the effort. Seemed he was below max for the 90mins even though he got a few top 10s on Strava. More in the tank all round
Fred would make an excellent GCN presenter. He is charming, funny, and a experienced cyclist.
I'm glad Ollie kept up the GCN challenge tradition of getting dropped. Great video guys 👍
But he wasnt very far behind. I guess Ollies strength training starts to pay off
We wouldn't have expected anything else! 😂
He would not break his character(getting dropped).
I read in the comments someone complaining that this video was an ad for Merida bikes, but without the support of the Bikes/component firms we wouldn't get these good fun videos. Also Fred Wright is one of the Bahrain Victorious team who is sponsered by Merida
As product placements go, this one was pretty fun. No complaints from me.
Thanks Knightwish - yep without Merida we wouldn't have been able to make this video happen!!
A UCI team isn't going to let a rider do stuff like this if there's no marketing benefit for them or sponsors. I'm all about corporate shilling if it gets us great content like this.
It's funny how at 5:24 they are struggling to hold pace and there is someone in the background going on a leisurely ride and keeping up. 😄
I🤣 saw that, that's the sort of thing i would do for a short time
Yeah it looked like their hands were on the top bar not looking too aero. Might have been an Ebike. Looked a little too leisurely for keeping up with them that well.
@@daryl4841 That was Harry Jordan. He’s a cat 2 racer. U.K. ebikes are limited to 25kph btw.
I just love to watch Ollie and Alex in anything they do. What a great team. I am impressed Ollie held up for the ride and did so well. We underestimate him for sure. Highly entertaining race. Well done guys.
Thanks Steve, vey kind. We do our best to keep you guys entertained 😎
Ollie's been putting in the work💪💯 props to him, I think the ride with Contador really adjusted his noggin. Proving to himself he's got more.
Ollie gets a lot of flack but he's an absolute beast for an amateur rider. He'd drop 98% of the people giving him grief, especially on a climb.
5:25 some random weekend cyclist threatens to overtake Ollie and Alex. Sign #1 that they wouldn’t win the challenge...
😂 Looked like he was taking it easy too!!
With only one hand on the bar as well
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that.
At first I thought it was Fred catching them already!
Offended to be classed as a weekend cyclist😭😭
I just love the energy you put into this on such a crap day, you guys really bring a smile to my face!
Cheers wasn't a great day but certainly was a fun challenge!!
I really enjoy these presenter vs pro challenges. The storm crashing down on the ending recap was epic. Great fun!
Thanks so much - glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Alex should be proud that he as avoided Ollie’s ever growing list of riders he has dropped while climbing, even if they didn’t know they were racing him.
And we’ll done Ollie, they gapped you but you recovered and were right there at the finish. Fun video!
I am more impressed by the two presenters doing so well! Wow.
They were already doomed when Ollie messed up the beep count.
🤣
Love the content. I don't like electric shifting disc brake bikes with cable routing through the stem but no doubt the Merida is a worthy race bike and for testing everybody was on the same bike adjusted for size.
We are reminded of what insiders know. Alex and Ollie can drop most that watch your videos and Tour riders are outer worldly. The thing that is most extraordinary is, you line up everybody in a room and you can't pick out the fastest guy. What's inside is different...like Secretariat.
That last point is a good one.
He was toying with you at the end, but great effort guys 👍💪
Like a cat with a half-dead mouse
he was! Fred is such a beast! so ridiculously strong. myself and alex picked up strava trophies on that ride and he destroyed us!
Nothing to be ashamed of. You guys did great. Enjoyable entertaining video as usual.
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it!!
I really do wonder how pros/people have a disciplined and calculated pace, most of the time i'd just sprint to get on their wheels
Because most would lose their contract or chances to get a decent one if they throw out energy for nothing.
It’s quite a science, they know how much they can give and what’s too much. From what power they will recover and what attack. Their coaches/team leaders do too, often enough.
Tho, lots of them have inhuman power and fitness, they still can’t cross their own bodies borders (usually).
And you’re right, it’s about discipline too, to not go out too far with your energy, otherwise you won’t recover and get dropped in long term anyway.
Well done guys…Respect to Alex&Ollie 👏🏻👏🏻
Hahah yeah. I expected them to get passed by the half way mark! 🙈
Thanks Dave!!
Finally looking at the sculturas properly!
Ollie and Alex that is a super time and effort over that short distance with so much climbing in that route, you boys are super fit, Fred is just a beast to be fair
Hah, amatuers!
I beat the world tour riders home by over 10 minutes in a stage of the Tour Down Under in 2020.
Granted, I did have a 5 hour head start, but that's just a minor detail ;)
that peep.. peep.. peeppp.. never gets old 🙈😆
Nice and entertaining video as usual guys! 👏🏼👏🏼
Would love to see the power comparison on this ride... Who else want to see?
5:16 Is that Chopper Jones in the background? He looks to be comfortably keeping up with the Alex & Ollie.
That's some good British sarcasm 😂 3:35
I love that pic of Ollie & Alex on the card at 1:05 just because Alex's smile remembered me of Wallace from Wallace & Grommit! 😅
Ok, Ollie (and Alex) putting down 340 watts for 8 minutes! Stop teasing Ollie! That's amazing!
Shows how good the pros are though, doesn't it Marcus? Fred putting out 380W like it's nothing!
Yes! I couldn't come close to that! Plus the rest of us are heavier 😄
You should do Andrew Feather vs Tour De France Pro, that would be interesting due to all the comparisons.
I would like to see, track sprinter vs hill climber on a short and long climb, that would be intrensting.
Great vid. Love Fred's Merida too. Unlucky guys!
That exact Goyt Valley climb is my cycling Mecca! Something magical about watching GCN taking on your favourite road.
It's an incredible climb!
Looked like Alex really wanted to go one on one towards the end. Was actually hoping for it lol
It was surprisingly close!
For sure! Alex is a bit of a beast when he gets a taste of competition
@@WarlockAgenda we need more videos of Alex getting into it like Conor, Ollie and Dan with “get fit” series. Can he regain pro sprinter form?
Bags of charisma from Fred, natural on camera, maybe a future in front of the camera?
Good one!
I was pulling for Fred on Stage 7 of the Vuelta!
Alright time for 3 vs 1
It seems like such a easy win for GCN....and yet, the 4 minute head start was 'dashed' by Fred. Chapeau ! Pro riders really are so powerful....impressive.
Nice to see you on the local roads, I love riding through the goyt valley in the summer, always looks so nice!
It's a beautiful part of the world!
@1:28 "We are all going to be using the exact same bike..." now I'd love to see that! 😆
Respect to Ollie, I’m sure he would have dropped them both if the route was a smidge longer 👍
We're sure he would (But it wasn't, and he got dropped... again 😉)
😂👍
Fair play giving Olliesome time to close the gap during the descent... ;p Great Race!
Those are some awesome looking bikes with that paint screen. They look fast just setting there. Looks like Ollie has found a new love. Nice job by all. Take care, Al
I grew up just outside Macclesfield! I know all these roads backwards. Great memories, thanks!
I don't know which one I'm more amazed. You guys putting up a good fight or Tour level riders ridiculous performance... amazing
The power of World Tour riders is INSANE!
Those Merida’s look great
Make it a 300km race with Alpine climbs and Ollie drops everyone. Great job everyone! 💪
thx for creating interesting videos, i rly liked the way you guys create videos about bikes. hope you guys stay healthy. God bless you guys!
6:03 that looked cool. Imagine if trim on a jacket was light up like that, not just reflective.
That was one of your best videos/efforts lads, unfortunately Freddie is a step ahead. Really enjoyed it, thanks
Fred's looking powerful this is going to be big breakout year I predict 💯💪
Looked very good at Omloop and KBK this weekend!! 💪
Love the new Merida, i have the 2019 version but thinking of getting the new one.....Love it ..............Great Vid Guys
Thanks Jason - glad you enjoyed the content!
I give them credit for creating tension when I think we knew the outcome.
Gettin faster, Ollie!
I love merida bikes! Its not that expensive even compared to local bikes in my country
Great job gcn for bringing video like this! 👍
4 min headed start.... mercy. You guys got a country butt whippin' but you gave it your best. Proves how powerful those pros are!
Fred is a beast! 💪
According to a 2015 study, sarcasm can promote creative thinking.
Love that new Merida Scultura
Let's get ready for 3 vs 1
I really enjoy these and you two are the best. Thanks for a smile today.
Thanks Todd! 😀
I wish we had Merida in the US. Those bikes are stunners.
That’s an impressive catch up. Beautiful bike.
Brickies, goyt and cat nice to see GCN on my local roads. I’ve see Fred a few times as well.
Great video everyone ..... Well done Ollie and Alex
Ollie please don't get dropped, please.
Nice one, fellas. The Merida looked fabulous!
Oh my. That was funny. Well done.
Thanks Mike!
Since you have so good relationship with Merida, perhaps you could ask them when they will start shipping 2022 collection bikes to dealers? 😎
I think 3. The key is to add a lunch stop where Fred must clean his plate from a number of items prepared by the GCN out of the cook books.
Great video 👍
Good effort GCN crew!
Why would you desing a TT course in England with right turns? And since it is a very hilly route, does having 2 amateur riders mean a big advantage, you can't really slipstream there.
2 amateurs?? These guys are no joke, they're ex-pros
@@theshyguy3269 Yes, they are amateurs, because they get no salary for racing. Alex was a pro back in the days, Ollie has never been one. Since then Alex lost lots of fittness. They might be pretty fit amateurs, but they are nowhere near as fast as amateurs like Dylan Johnson, Chris Opie (who is now an amateur too) or Jasper Verkuijl.
@@theshyguy3269 nah, can confirm, Ollie was not a pro.
No wonder I can't find a Merida Scultura V Team available anywhere when you guys have 3 of them!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Never forget: Ollie dropped Contador.
Keep making these creative videos gents. They are as interesting as they are fantastic.
Cheers Mark - glad you enjoyed it!
Thought for sure that this was going to end up one against one. 😂
feels like this idea came up in a brainstorm for topics where Ollie and Alex just wanted to ride with a Pro on their bike!
Local climbs for me , when the weather is bad the cat and fiddle is a brutal place to be
You guys will only beat him after manon joining the challenge!
He's a nice lad, gotta love how hard he started on you guys!
The Merida looks amazing.
We certainly enjoyed riding it!
Gr8 video lads, looked good fun, I'm glad I wasn't doing that. Chapeau Ollie for keeping up, it wasn't your best distance 👍😎
I would love a Scultura, but pretty sure I can’t afford the version you were riding in the video! A Scultura 4000 in team colors is looking pretty attractive though!
I've grown quite fond of the countdown 'beep..beep..beep..boop'😂
Great video guys! Lots of fun and beautiful bikes. Of course, none of us mere mortals can keep up with a tour rider...
Thank you David, We thought Ollie did particularly well and didn't get dropped to soon!
Alex smashed it.. kind of! great bikes too
We agree!
Great & funny video! Thanks!
Your weather ... Do you even have a sun there on your island. xD
Not for a long time, winter is very grey and wet
Alex and Ollie's performance looking a bit better after this year's RVV and TDF!
Aren't those "cool little brake fins" that Ollie is pointing out at 3:00, the standard heat sync that Shimano integrates into all their pads L03A (resin), and L04C (metal)?
I think the difference between Fred and the GCN team is less than the difference between the GCN team and... most of the rest of us!
Always interesting to see how fast the pros are on something like that. That was a brutal course. Nearly 1000 m in 44 km?! 1:07 in a 2 up is also an incredible time. Not too sure I'd be attacking those descents on non-closed roads though...😕 that really looks a bit dangerous. Puts my efforts (no mad descending) on a 33 km loop with 550 m into perspective. I can just hold 30 kph (sometimes) and it is lung busting.
It's always interesting to see just HOW fast the pros really are!
The Brickies is a favourite climb of mine. Wish I could do it that fast.
2:47 where's the "nice" ollie, where is it? 🤣
You both did great. He is a beast
Ollie! GCN producer always pick on you to do this bigger number trying to beat smaller number event
What a cool, fun video!
Thank you!
Love this challenge videos
Anyone riding the brickworks needs to stop off at Kickback Coffee. Unbelievable coffee, cakes and people. Just don't have too much if your heading up!
@5:20 "Hope this is enough to hold Fred off..." well, it seems it is barely enough to hold off a cyclist riding along at a leisurely pace and creeping up from behind.
Back to the drawing board boys. You need to jump on to GCN training channel and do more HIIT sessions. 😜. Fair play though great efforts all round.
Hats 🎩 off to Ollie he was a good average rider but now he’s not to far from mixing it with the pros 💪
Next GCN+ mission to get Ollie to race in a highest category as he can 👍
GCN+ Documentary
Well done!
Great film lads
The new Scultura is my dream bike!
It’s a really nice looking bike, especially in that scheme.
There goes Ollie, pushing his imaginary glasses up his nose :) x
