I seriously hate how there's a whole culture around "fixing" art. If I drew something and posted it on social media, and had some self-righteous douchebag change my creation, I'd feel greatly insulted.
This is why I dislike fan fics. You create a show and post it online just to see people sexualize it. That's not to say all fan fics or fan art is bad, it's the one's who tell the author to make it canon
@@nguyen5762 I've created my fair share of fanart and fanfic but I would never harass anyone over it or claim that I fixed another person's creation, some people are really just on their own planet
And you be rightfully so, the thought that someone "fixed" YOUR art, even though you made it exactly as you wanted it to be, shows that people like these need to have their little soap box kicked from underneath them.
@@nguyen5762 that's different the people who "fix" art just literally use the original art but destroy it claiming to fix it. Fan art stuff is original drawings of already existing characters. If that lady "fixing" art would have just drawn her own interpretation and didn't scream about it then it would be fine. The problem is basically defacing pre existing art. Like anyone can draw the mona lisa however they want but it would be insulting for them to go to the original and deface it then say there fixed it as if she is the authority on how art should be. Different interpretations are fine but defacing pre existing art and claiming it's fixed is ignorant and disrespectful.
"fixing" people's artwork is so toxic and so patronizing, it's something that really needs to die. It's one thing to want to draw a character as a different ethnicity or gender out of curiosity, but it's something entirely different to take someone's own work, tell them it's wrong and "fix" it
It really is, isn’t it? It’s also insulting to the artist’s intelligence, like they have to have the concept of other cultures spoonfed to them. I’m an artist, and I’ve already had people “correct” me on my women having visible abs, and I’ve said “listen, you might like it one way, but I like it this way. It’s my say in the end.” You start to wonder who they think they are and how issues pertaining to groups they are not a part of make them believe they have jurisdiction to decide for someone else how they feel. It’s ironic here, seeing as it was a white person patronizing an Asian person about their perceived lack of knowledge on black people. This is, unfortunately, what keeps minorities under a political identity. Tangent: I’ve a friend in Brazil who says pretty much any real Latino finds the term “Latinx” patronizing and racist. It assumes that they don’t know what to call themselves and the progressive white society will teach the “savages” how to act. I’m trans myself and I find it not helpful to creating a world less obsessed with strict gender norms. Fake woke needs to die.
Yeah i also hate when someone just fixes the arts that i make like, people are different. They have their own style and way of drawing things. It's not like everyone has to be like your drawing, everyone is different and you can't just fix them randomly that's just like saying their work is bad but not directly
The only acceptable way to "fix" someone's art is to add Squidward's nose to it. NOW it's art! Seriously, though, that was really disrespectful. It's all good to have your own headcannons but don't shit on other peoples' art if they don't share them.

@God Rolf, The Ed position "Knuckles is black" No, he's not. He's not a human, he's a fictional red echidna. The artwork is a gjinka. Unless Knuckles is canonically a human, it's up to the artist however they want to interpret a non-human character.
@@jojo58 If the writer/creator does not say it's so, then it is not so. Knuckles is pale with red fur. Saying he is black because he acts a certain way or lives in a certain area is ignorant.

@Bluecupcake_funko7 you probably not gonna know this character, but OSC fans let’s refer over to Fanny. She hates everything and is very mad. A popular thing with fanny humanization is that she’s white. I personally had hc her as white too. but do you see any dumbass making fanny black by using another person‘s art and saying they fixed the persons art? NO! because it’s not OK.
It’s literally not about the fact she made him black. It’s about how she claimed to “fix” the drawing. All sonic characters are not human, therefore not falling into any of our race labels. Any artist can draw them in any ethnicity they want to. But disrespecting artists for disagreeing with your personal headcannons? Now that’s not only utterly stupid and embarrassing it’s also very rude. I’ll bet y’all she would throw the absolute biggest tantrum if someone tried to “fix” her art.
@Ruby Williams then if a sonic character is human and has their own race, an artist is going to draw that character how it is drawn. I don't see what your point here is.

the knuckles the japanese artist drew doesnt even look white... white people have this peachy pink skin color and the drawing looks more like a shade of orange or yellow, yknow, like an asian person? i really fucking hate the idea that westerners have this impression where asian artists are _obsessed_ with white people when they live in monoethnic countries and might not have interacted with a white (or black or any other race outside of asian for that matter) their entire life, and the majority of the pale people they ever draw are almost always asian, but hey! asian people dont fucking exist! animes are racist bc they only feature white people! if youre pale youre white! this honestly makes me sick to the stomach like stop thinking the entire world revolves around the social dynamics of america, we exist and dont think about u

The funny part is that she is claiming that the people who are criticizing her are racists, when she's using the most sterotypical arguments to consider Knuckles a "black-coded character".
It's not surprising, since the ideology that comes from is cultural Marxism, which is very much based on identitarianism. It's very fucked up and is not only being taught in colleges now, but is also being taught in 'sensitivity training' nowadays in workplaces and government. Note; sensitivity training used to just be about learning your coworker's personal boundaries and trying to avoid disrespect or harrassment. But the businesses and expers who create the training material are all intersectional activists now who believe in things like implicit bias and the progressive stack. A lot of their ideology is actually blatantly racist.
@@ANPC-pi9vu I had to do one of those the other day. I didnt really bother paying attention, I never do to those things because most of them are just refreshers or basic common sense, but what I did see really stuck in my throat. One of them was a picture of a black woman with a sign saying 'I can be an assistant manger to' as if that was somehow a shocking thing. The entire thing could be basically boiled down to 'dont be a dick at work', which I would have thought would be blatantly obvious to everyone.
As an artist, I can see the person wasn't mad because she made knuckles black, it's because she just stole his art, edited it and then claimed it was "fixed" and didn't even ask for consent from the artist
The fact some people would say the character isn't black because "they don't act black" disgusts me. Basing a ethnicity from their past stereotypes isn't different from saying "all blonde women are stupid".

Because these people don't have the courtesy, editing someone art for the purpose of criticising or pushing your agenda without their approval is considered to be very rude. It shows how much of a jackass these people are, taking other people art and pain them however they want then use it and go back and attack the original creator.
You know, a thought just hit me. Insisting that a character is "black-coded" and that they must therefore be black sounds to me alot like they're trying to enforce racial stereotypes and insist that people should not cross said boundaries. Hmmm I wonder if there's a name for that.
One type of humanisation is going the colourful route such as Doug / Monster High / Equestria Girls, and just making them yellow, red and blue. That would also avoid skin colour altogether. (Also don't see yellow as Asian or red as Native American; those people aren't literally yellow/red, my suggestion is to actually use yellow/red skin here)
Knuckles is literally not human. If you want to draw a human version of him as black or white or any other race, go ahead. It's the ""fixing"" people's art and claiming their wrong and you're right that's the problem. It had never been explicitly said what race knuckles is because he isn't a human. It's literally not necessary.
@@Random_User_ Ok and....? Did u even read that comment?draw him whatever way u like, going to other people's art with your head canon and saying "i fixed it" is idiotic and racist.
i dont undersand why people are so upset over different interpretations of non-human characters. i commonly see this in the my little pony fandom as well. an artist i like drew human twilight and pinkie as white, and people were furious. people in the comments insisted twilight was "canonically black" (and when i asked for proof i got none) but she's literally a purple horse. her human form is purple too. people are going to see different characters in different ways
Knuckles isn't black or white, he's red. But if you take any pallet from his skin, he does have cream colors close enough to white. That would be my guess on the logic of his human form coloring. Either way, he's japanese, so he would be made how a japanese person would see him.
Sooo if "I" a Pacific Islander was born from an Asian country/community with Asian friends and I act as Asian, does that mean I'm Asian? When you can clearly see I have 70% Pacific Islander blood...

I don't get how people are calling knuckles white OR black. he's a fucking echidna that was made in JAPAN. If a japanese artist took anthropomorphic animals from a japanese video game, and humanized them, I can really only think of one way they'd probably draw them.
There's no rhyme or reason to any of this Just idiot people who have no idea ... I'm hoping they learn something from their mistakes and stop making the world more pointless That would require a measure of humility from the 'art fixer' A virtue in short supply...
Changing his color because you think it matches his voice or personality or whatever is some of the most racist things I've seen, she just compared his traits with skin color instead of taking him as is and ignoring the color because it doesn't tell you anything. So basically she is JUST reducing him to his assumed skin color, as if that's the only thing he has
Honestly what she did wouldn't even have been that bad if she had been more respectful about it. If she had respectfully mentioned that it would be better in her opinion with Knuckles as black while still being respectful of the original art instead of claiming she "fixed" it, and hadn't accused other people of being racist for calling her out on what she did, there wouldn't even really be much of a problem. I don't think she's racist, she's just disrespectful, apathetic, and ignorant. She thought she could score internet popularity by taking advantage of minority communities for her own benefit, and it backfired.
what you're describing is called being colorblind and it is so outdated that it is literally made fun of in season 1 episode 2 of the office. being "colorblind" is not being "not racist". it's pretending race doesn't matter (or even sometimes doesn't exist) which makes recognizing privilege and changing actually racist systems more difficult all because members of the "superrace" would prefer to believe they're not racist, ironically holding on to their racial privilege because doing this makes recognizing the existence of racism near impossible. after all, how can you stop a system of belief based on something you "don't perceive." pretending that skin color is not correlated to ethnicity and common culture is what colorblind people call being "race blind." it's what POC simply refer to as being stupid. an unintentional/consubconscious racist if you will. colorblind racism is not the opposite of racism, it's just a new kind--one that the privileged can ignore. btw, im referring directly to a paper on colorblind racism *from the 90s* so get with the times man.
Just make your own art with whatever skin tone you'd like. It's an adaptation. The only thing that was wrong was the editing of someone else's art. The color of a cartoon character's skin as a human version is in the eye of the pen holder, just make it your self, though
While this is true you should then take the time to also make the proportions and your own style so it looks like you put actual effort into it as well. Or else people going to mistake it for one of two things. Tracing and just recolored it. Or its some maldeformed attempt at drawing that probably wasn't meant for the internet to see it in the light of day. Sometimes people need to realize that if your going to claim art as a figure of speech you need to make it your own voice and not like you are just learning how to color.
She didn’t just make this look like a race issue. She tried “”fixing”” art. Lady, art doesn’t need fixing. Art is Art. @@alan_7390 well it can if you ask permission to the original creator of the art But just straight up "fixed" the art like that and call it a "garbage" is different
@@alan_7390 The problem is that you *have* to ask to the artist if you can make an edit of one of his works. It's easy to use the excuse of "It's just an edit" for getting all the merit.
@@alan_7390 English major here. The "editor" as you imply the person to be explicitly stated *"fixed"*, not "edited". This fundamentally creates a non-ambiguous statement of belief that the "editor" saw a problem with the artist's work. "Correcting" is just a sugarcoated insult. There is nothing transformative of the edit other than a pointless detail as the artist (not the "editor") merely changed one thing out of the entire artwork and thus could be considered plagarism (at worst) or a derivative work (as extremely little details were changed). It's not art at all.
I see no problem with drawing a human version of a character and making them black, it’s just the fact that they said they were “fixing” their art without their permission that’s the problem.

As an artist, can we stop the whole “fixing” artworks? There was nothing wrong with the artwork in the first place. If the artist was to draw the human form of a hedgehog white, let them. If you want to go ahead a redesign it where Knuckles is black, don’t fucking edit the artist’s work and then “claim it” as your fixed version. You’re basically stealing. Just fucking draw a new picture with Human Knuckles being black and credit the original artist for “inspiration” or “reference”. I hate this whole “let me take this artist work. Do 10 minutes of coloring the character brown. Then repost it and get equal to half the amount of likes compared to the artist who took hours doing the of piece.” I feel like now, as a black person, some white people just want to get woke brownie points for the bare minimum like sitting in their chair coloring a character brown other than actually trying to be supportive of black people/poc.

@@silliestbilly100 it is not hurtful but rather disrespectful. Artists make mistakes and sometime make works that aren't accurate but rather than constructively criticizing their work ,posting it with a slight change without consent of original artist is disrespectful.

Borderline, the "fixing art" stuff is so irritating. Knuckles can be reimagined into any ethnicity you want, he's he's hedgehog for goodness sakes. The issue is the skin color of knuckles lol Or part of it is. The artist drew their own interpretation of a human knuckles and there was nothing wrong with it. they were even consistent with his characters “skin tone” (his mouth area) by making him a bit more tan than Sonic. I agree with you. Specially since reimagining something is already a thing and it is called AU. I can make Sailormoon AU as a black-old-fat-male (a total 180 of the original) and that would be just fine since im not claiming that i "fixed" the original sailormoon design.
It's fine if you want to want to draw/headcanon a character as black or whatever, what isn't is taking someone's art, editing over it and claiming you "improved" it like an egotistical jackass.

"fixing" people's artwork is so toxic and so patronizing, it's something that really needs to die. It's one thing to want to draw a character as a different ethnicity or gender out of curiosity, but it's something entirely different to take someone's own work, tell them it's wrong and "fix" it
@Prabu Bramantri you can't read his name? Lel.
It’s my say in the end.”
You start to wonder who they think they are and how issues pertaining to groups they are not a part of make them believe they have jurisdiction to decide for someone else how they feel. It’s ironic here, seeing as it was a white person patronizing an Asian person about their perceived lack of knowledge on black people. This is, unfortunately, what keeps minorities under a political identity.
Tangent:
I’ve a friend in Brazil who says pretty much any real Latino finds the term “Latinx” patronizing and racist. It assumes that they don’t know what to call themselves and the progressive white society will teach the “savages” how to act. I’m trans myself and I find it not helpful to creating a world less obsessed with strict gender norms.
Fake woke needs to die.

Well, factually, Knuckles is "white".
Look at his snout colour, it's what we'd call "white", now imagine him without the red fur... same colour!
Just make your own art with whatever skin tone you'd like. It's an adaptation. The only thing that was wrong was the editing of someone else's art. The color of a cartoon character's skin as a human version is in the eye of the pen holder, just make it your self, though
Facts

Only thing that made it even worse was the fact she insulted the artist that she stole it from as well.
Art is Art. Not only that but it’s really fucking rude to just rip someone’s work and make this undesired political detail that no one asked, and diss all credit from the actual artist.

The problem isn’t that she made him black, the problem was her saying she “fixed” it. I’m all fine with people reimagining characters in different ways, but why not simply create your own original character and make him black. Don’t go passing off your secondhand creation as if it’s the original work
I think the problem is, other than claiming that she "fixed" it, that she just blatantly editted the original fanart. It's a different story if she made a new fanart, maybe with the og's design to redraw him as black. And even that she can't just say that she "fixed" it since it's still basically the og's design.
I agree with you. Specially since reimagining something is already a thing and it is called AU. I can make Sailormoon AU as a black-old-fat-male (a total 180 of the original) and that would be just fine since im not claiming that i "fixed" the original sailormoon design.
