- As requested, the lovely and somewhat disturbing tale of Donkey Skin, related partially to the classic Cinderella fairytale. My microphone apparently died half way through, so my apologies for that, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the story anyway.

Music is from the RUclips audio library.
This story has a lot of variants. In Germany, there's "Allerleiraugh" ("All-Kinds-of-Fur"). In Italy, it's "Wooden Maria". In the British Isles they combine elements of this tale with bits of "Like Meat Loves Salt" to create "Cap O'Rushes". In the Appalachian Mountains of the U.S., "Cap O'Rushes" gets changed to "Catskin". And Puerto Rico has one in which the princess wears a lion skin and which I read under the title "The Three Dresses".
As others have mentioned, the Storyteller episode was called "Sapsorrow".
There's also an Egyptian version of this: "Juleidah, the princess in the leather burqa". You can read it on the great Rejected Princesses website:
www.rejectedprincesses.com/princesses/juleidah
are you related to joseph hoffman!!!?? (owner of hoffman academy)
In the 1970 movie adaptation of Donkey Skin, the Fairy Godmother ends up marrying the King. The film kind of implies that was her plan all along, which makes a weird story that little bit weirder. I would like to hear Hans Christian Anderson's The Tinder Box for your next Faerie Dale, please.
"Email this to your grandma" Best outro ever.
I've missed your videos so much! Happy to hear you're back again. Yeah. Donkey Skin does sound somewhat similar, but is very Cinderella-esque. Speaking of, in both this and Cinderella, wouldn't the prince realize that there fingers/feet are obviously been recently damaged and not healed yet? "Oh, you're fingers are covered in burns! Let me try to shove this on you! Oh... it's stuck..."
There is a fairy tale I heard when I was a kid, but I have been unable to find it. It's a japanese tale about the origin of rice (if I remember correctly). About a woman who gets kidnapped by monsters and is forced to make rice by stirring a pot. Again, I haven't heard this since I was a kid, so I'm probably completely wrong on half the details. But you should cover that if you can find any evidence of it!
The bison hat is also amazing.
I've said it before but I love that hat so much. Weird but fun story too!
Thank you so much! I grew up reading this story, not completely sure if it was exactly like this one, but I clearly remember the art that was in the book. So sad that I no longer have that.
The book also had the story with the twelve swan brothers, and one with two beautiful sisters, where one of them met a bear who was actually a cursed prince. I miss those stories.
And as always, love your storytelling :)
I was momentarily distracted by your very fancy hat.
The Wolf Among Us was my first experience of this story.
I subscribed to this channel because of the D&D videos, I had no idea I'd end up watching readings of fairy tales (sorry, I meant Fairy Dales), but here I am, loving the content so far.
Sapsorrow was my favorite episode of the Storyteller!
I think the episode of Storyteller you're thinking of is Sapsorrow. There's a synopsis on the Wikipedia page. In the Storyteller version, instead of a donkeyskin she dresses in a mess of other skins and feathers and calls herself Straggletag. She also loses a slipper instead of the ring. But all the other details (sun dress etc) are the same. And it had French and Saunders in it!
And now you're reminding me I need to buy the DVD collection of that show. And also to feel sad because (IIRC) it was filmed on VHS, and so it'll probably never get released on any newer format.
The noise sounds like a blender shredding ice and a viscous fluid
gold poop sounds like a great story right there
I know this one as 'Allerleirauh', but there's no gold-pooping donkey or a fairy godmother in that version. Gold-pooping donkeys are kindof neat though.
Wow, that is pretty different from the version I've always heard! IDK if this is the one you meant at the end, btw, but the variation I've always heard was All-Kinds-of Fur. So maybe that's what you're thinking of? Either way, great video and awesome hat!
Maybe the original Brothers Grimm? Those were some dark faerie tales! Not that I particularly enjoy dark just that it is a different perspective of which we are accustom.
Welcome back Dael, we missed you and your awesome tales
love your channel!! Definitely feel great to hear someone read you a tale of old after a long day. feels like a kid. aahhh
When I first saw the name of this Faerie Dael I didn't recognize it, then I thought I knew it when the donkey pooping gold turned up, and then I didn't recognize the rest, so now I'm confused. I basically can't tell if i have heard it before, but it was very enjoyable to watch this video anyway.
The Series was called, The Storyteller and the particular story was called Sapsorrow
I remember watching it as a kid, loved the series and ironically its one of the main reasons I keep a watch on this channel, kinda makes me thing about that particular time in my life (Did you know it also had a Greek Myths season?)
Down here (Wait, its not down for you, its like, Westward? Anyways...) it was called 'El Narrador de Cuentos' (The Teller of Tales, we just rock at naming things) and the story was 'La harapienta' (I guess it would be kinda like 'Raggamuffin?', it literally means 'She-Covered-In-Rags, again with our incredibly naming skills, but also implies the whole 'homeless' thing), ok, this is just a bunch of useless and pointless information, so I'll shut up now
So glad I found your videos
Entertainment education I love it
Would you ever consider doing one on Wuthering Heights? Love your channel!!! New fan!
I wonder if dael has a full closet of hats because the hat you are wearing is so cool
Please make more Faerie Daels videos!please please please please, please, please pretty please, for I love them so.
Ah I heard this story as the story of Sapsorrow! It was a bit different, but mostly the same.
One of my favorite fairy tales is little 1 eye little 2 eyes and little 3 eyes or maruska and the 12 months
You are a very talented storyteller. I can see why you ended up being a DM.
This story reminds me of Cinderalla.
I recommend The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde as your next fairy Dale
I love your hat !
This is so great. I wish I could tell stories that well
I originally heard this story on "The Storyteller". I found the series in a video hire store, some time in the 90s. It was titled "Sapsorrow", didn't have a gold-pooping donkey, but instead the very Disney-like helpful animals who helped her craft a disguise of fur and feathers.
Apparently the Muppets have their own wiki and the Sapsorrow article is here:
muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Episode_108:_Sapsorrow
The episode is on RUclips:

Welcome back! Loved it!
I loved it! I highly recommend you watch the French film adaptation "Peau D"Ane' with Catherine Deneuve, it is lovely and the costumes are stunning.
the hat is very cute!
She's a character in the Fables game, "The Wolf Among Us".
14:18 I think it was the sun dress, they didn’t wanna look like at her in the donkey skin, they don’t getta look at her in the sun dress
The whole thing with the ring and only fitting one finger makes it sound like it's just Cinderella without the foot fetish. And with a gold-pooping donkey.
There's a French 1970 musical movie by Jacques Demy called appropriately "Peau d'âne" (Donkey skin)... it's actually quite good.
You're thinking of the "Storyteller" episode: "Sapsorrow". In which they mashed up "Cinderella", "Allerleirauh", and (as you stated) "Donkeyskin". Hope that helps.
Friend of mine just linked me this and I love it. I love collecting fairy tales ^_^
I wouldn't mind if you did more faerie daels. Please do more. :)
Donkey Skin's dad was terrifying! Just doling out death threats all over the place to get his way... who knows how many people were put to death when they couldn't find his daughter for him. O_O
Well, I've been trying to get through the Tain Bo Cuailnge and I think it would be great to hear a Dael rendition of some of the tales of Cu Chulainn. Maybe that doesn't really qualify as a faerie tail, though.
YOU HAD ME FOOLED! I mean you didn’t but.. YOU’RE AUSTRALIAN! COOL! I mean I thought you were British like me, but like OHMYGOODNESS COOL!! YOU’RE AUSTRALIAN!! WOOOOOOO!
Woul love to see a video on rumpelstiltskin, or the baba yaga
FaerieDael
I love the hat, not going to lie I think I'd like loss of Internet connection. It wouldn't bother my reading and painting but I'd love to see some people's reactions, I don't know what my niece would do without facebook I think she'd go into withdrawal
Great story! I don't think I've heard it before, thanks for sharing, as always. And I love the hat - where'd you get it?
If you've ever seen the series Drunk History, I could definitely see a show or webseries where you're narrating these Fairy Daels that get acted out in a similar fashion.
EDIT: Curious, what happened to the audio between 12:53 and 12:56. Genuinely curious.
Yea I had to change the volume after 12:56. Not sure what happened as well...
The amount of times I've watched this video is probably unhealthy
THE WOLF AMONG US!
Very well done as always. And if you could tell me the absolute must do things in Australia I'd love to know? I'm visiting there the end of this month, first time ever.
Where in Australia are you visiting? It's kind of big
+enzopenguin I'll be landing at Darwin international but I'll be there for 4 weeks 5 if I'm lucky
I would love to hear the story of the Grufflehog, like from Jim Henson's Storyteller
The Twelve Dancing Princesses.
I think what we can take away from this is: this Fairy Godmother is not very helpful, and Donkey Skin's solo parties make her the most relatable fairy tale princess ever.
You look cute in that hat :)
Around the 13 minute mark I'm guessing the camera died? Audio gets a big ol' change at that point. I love the Fairy Daels. This one is especially welcome after your unfortunate break (no internet...? I. Am. So. So. Sorry.) as it's almost 20 minutes long :)
Well, Australia has rather shitty internet at the best of times, this isn't too surprising.
Funny, I just restarted the Telltale Game The Wolf Among Us which tells a very brief version of this story in the first episode.
You should do some aboriginal dream time stories,
Perhaps the narrator jus had really big hands (by the way, I recall a fairy tale from my childhood, one about a cowardly rabbit looking for courage to be worthy of his love and he was given a Magic Feather in the form of a walnut with a tiny bell in it, it was nothing particullary original or weird but it was sweet and I'd like to hear it as a fairy Dale, if possible).
Why yes, good sir, do marry your own daughter in order to make a "proper" heir, I don't see how that could backfire... Donkey Skin is a favourite here in France, as the movie adaptation in 1970 was a huge hit.
I can't recall if you've told the story of Adonis, and his death! It is a favourite of mine, being Lebanese, as it unfluenced the name and mythology around one of our rivers, which turns red from his blood when fall comes with the first rains. Fun! :)
Dael is really in a witch war with a fellow witch which is why the internet of an entire country went down when she started her videos up again. Okay, that's not true. It's probably due to 3 kangaroos hopping up and down on the main computers that the overseas cables connect to when they enter Australia. This is fun since Australia is full of really weird creatures that you can create your own fairy tale about why the internet died for a week like that.
So great to have you back Dael. It's really sad that you could probably do an incest quarter since there are way too many fairy tales that feature that horrible topic. Yuck!
So you got affected by the Bogpond outage too? Damn Telstra ruining my already terrible week with their unbelievably horrible service!
this sounds a lot like the story of St. Dymphna, patron saint of rebels
I wonder if this is where Terry Pratchett got the Luggage character from. Also if your looking for an idea of another story how about the Six Servants, the original X-Men ;) . I was reminded of that story recently as i'm reading Baron Munchausen and he totally ripped it off for one of his tales.
How about a Japanese creation myth? Izanagi and Izanami? It has plenty of wtf moments in it.
If the ring fit perfectly, how did it fall off into the cake in the first place? #plothole
The Goose Girl.
The Boy Who Drew Cats is a japanese story i heard from a friend
The version I grew up with was princess cat skin
This reminds me of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (great film if you've not watched it), which is itself based on Japanese folklore. Mixed with Cinderella for good measure, what is it with these tales and their one-size-fits-one stuff? I'm a little disappointed that the donkey didn't actually do anything, you'd think gold pooping would make for a relevant plot point. I bet they didn't even use its gold for the sun dress.
yeah I was really surprised at the use of magic gold-pooping donkey in this, ten points for originality
Taliesin!
Nice hat.
Is incest really that odd when it comes to royal families though? Would love to hear another Scottish fairy tale - I remember when I first came here being told about selkies, kelpies and Tam Linn but never heard their stories.
I remember reading a femslash of this on tumblr. It was good.
Could you try to make a non-European one? maybe one from the middle east?
That shirt is a One Ring shirt.
Do you think you could tell the story of Mélusine ? :)
She was in the wolf among us
wait, if her ring fit it wouldn't have fallen off in the first place!
That's the only thing I can see wrong with the story. although her dad is creepy, she's a welcher!
Raggletag! That is the other name of the story from Jim Henson
I may have misunderstood something here, but I'd think that seeing a girl who's the spitting image of the crown princess of the neighbouring kingdom would get other royalty to recognise her, donkey skin or not. Maybe I'm overthinking things but I'd think that there would have been some commentary on a member of royalty (albeit from another realm) working as a scullery maid. ô.Ô
As for Faerie Dael ideas, I'd love to hear you tell the original (ie. gory) versions of Little Red Riding Hood or Snow White or hell, any of the Grimm Fairy Tales. ^_^
And a wolf wearing an old woman's nightgown and nightcap shouldn't look like an old woman, but it still works in "Little Red Riding Hood". Fairy tale logic dictates that disguises always work no matter how ridiculous.
As soon as I heard "their daughter" I stopped what I was doing and Looked up at my computer.
my gf wanted to be treated like a princess, so i called her donkey skin
damn good lovely, why don't you do the "salt" story, about a king that asked her daughter how much she loved him and she said, "Like the meat to the salt"l... pleeeeaaaseeee
Did George R.R.Martin write this fairy tale? Because between sick pervert fathers and people burning their fingers with acid, it kinda feels like a GRRM style story, not to mention that chest with time-lord technology...
Anyway, good to see you again Kingsmill. Don't be a stranger. :)
Do the tale of Hans the Hedgehog.
The Storyteller episode was Sapsorrow :)
donkey skin was a green lantern
How about Princess Mouse Skin?
Better at the people then me
so you saying she had kidney failure because well a waist that thin kinda means you have a lot of health problems. But i guess its not the worst part of the story
you woke too early!
no drawings dael? :)
The Jim Henson Storyteller episode was called "Straggletag". I love the series but always hated this story though, I much prefer your version. This clip is basically why, he literally talks to her about how he'd recognise his "love" anywhere, by her voice or eyes and it's not just the shining dresses TO HER FACE, listening to her voice. It is a shining example of someone not actually noticing the person, but they still get together :s
The straggletag one does at least have the father reluctant to marry his daughter though and it's more that he's pressured into it by court & tradition so he wants to stall with the dresses as much as his daughter. So ups and downs really =)
ruclips.net/video/n6JAvTrkTzU/видео.html
also yeah, all the "people tried to cut of melt flesh off their fingers but still weren't slim enough" or "her waist was so slim you could fit you hands around it" is really messed up too :s
I love that you call out the messed up stuff the way you do, there are a lot of fairytales I just accepted as a kid and didn't think about until hearing again when older.
Love the storytelling, your sense of humour, the props and the art. Excellent times all round =D
The Turnip, for sure.
doralice?
This story makes me wanna yak, get it cause she's wearing a yak hat, and the story is kinda gross, I know I crack myself up. Haha 😂
