As an animal lover and someone who is a big fan of the shows but just started the books, I didn’t expect going into this video that I’d be nodding my head when it came to eating cats and dogs but here I am. Stannis is the man. You’re so right. I’m also stunned that I’m in agreement with you about sacrificing Shireen since I was so upset about that initially. But you’re right, that’s _actual_ sacrifice and also many respected men in the Bible did the same thing but for much less noble causes. Lastly, you two are mean and make disrespectful comments that imply women are weaker or more pathetic in at least two of your videos I watched today. So naturally, as a woman, I immediately subscribed. Thanks. Sincerely, a fellow RUclipsr.

I see what you’re saying but the issue with this is that when King Bobby B died, the throne by rights passed to the elder, STANNIS. And if Renly wasn’t such a brash idiot, he should have declared himself, Storm’s End, and his Storm Land bannermen for his older brother. Stannis even said he would declare Renly his fucking heir until he birthed a son. He only managed to get one child in decades from his fugly wife so..Renly would for sure be the King in due time.

      @The.Kyle.Scott. 11 месяцев назад +4

@MrKILLINOOBZ You’re right about bannerman, they are fickle creatures who have the tendency to flip sides to whomever offers them the most benefits and victory. But, as I said before, if Renly and the Storm Lands had sided with Stannis from the jump and sealed the alliance with the Reach and Highgarden via marriage pact with Renly with Margerary and Mace Tyrell as Hand…the Lannisters are defeated QUICKLY. They would continue to fight a two front war against The North/Riverlands whom they had never beat in battle, but with the Battle of the Blackwater becoming the sacking of Kingslanding. Joffrey is disposed, Stannis sits the Iron Throne and is convinced to broker a peace with the Young Wolf.

Renly was fully determined to go to battle against him, and no matter how well or poorly the battle went, it would doubtless mean thousands of dead and wounded, men who are sorely needed to fight the Lannisters. He sent the Mountain to crush the heads of two infant children of the the Mad King, then had lunch talking about his family honor until Ned arrived and objected to it. He just sipped his wine and married off his daughter to the new King. If R+L=J, there is reason why Ned didn't say anything about John other than "yea, I had sex, this is of my blood." Stannis was wrong for trusting Renly's Baratheon traitor army in the attack on kings landing i mean he killed their leader then when Renly comes back from the grave apparently Renly's army changed as quickly they didn't have the loyalty that Stannis's men had. wrong. in feudalism, most soldiers only really listen to their personal noble who's on their land. which is why so many people fight for the Lannisters even though the Lannisters only really have fear and money, and not much else.
if stannis failed to have the loyalty of most houses from the start, perhaps thats because he was genuinely unpopular and didn't deserve to have a big army.

Oberyn isn't a coward for the poison because the poison was never going to save his life, it wasn't fast-acting enough for that. The poison was to make sure he killed Gregor even if Gregor killed him in the duel, so it was there to ensure justice was done in the meta because the fight was about more than Tyrion's guilt or innocence. Win or lose justice demanded that Gregor die.

Stannis wasn't thinking about stopping the White Walkers when he sacrificed Shireen. He turned that option down flat until Ramsey attacked their camp in the middle of the night and he was desperate. I'm glad I don't know you guys if you think sacrificing loved ones is justifiable based on superstition. I agree the show paints him in far worse light than the books, but that act is in the show, and it fails spectacularly. You guys give no respect to fighting on dragon back, but it's perfectly acceptable to have a witch kill people because Tywin would? People only support Renly because he's superficially charming and he promises political rewards to the people who back his claim. Dumb and Dumber missed this plot point and tried to make it look like people support Renly for purely moral reasons. Stannis is the Mannis and nothing can change that.

@@godemperorofmankind3.091He was the legitimate successor to the throne (Ned Stark, mr honour himself, said as much) and enacted a pretty progressive meritocracy system all things considered. He ditched the corrupt and seemingly empty faith of the seven and their hypocrite septons for a faith that actually does something (prepping for the very real White Walker threat) AND he took on an ex-smuggler with solid diplomatic skills as Hand of the King... a commoner from Flea Bottom.
Stannis had the best claim, but was also among the best possible ruler options available for Westeros. Bar a scenario where Margaery surives Cersei's BS and manages to rule by proxy of Tommen, I can't really think of an alternative that inspires comperable optimism.

@@GeneralGrievousCIS one of the whole points of the books is that claim and succession don't mean anything. all the smallfolk want is to be left alone. doesn't matter which family rules them.
Tyrion enacted the "meritocracy" and even then its not a meritocracy because its still the nobility that chooses.
stannis was himself corrupt and brutal so how did he ditch the corrupt?
the only reason he's relevant at all to anything right now is because of the iron bank giving him money for no reason based on nothing. that's the very definition of corrupt. no one likes him. no one wants to follow him. he never wanted any friends and thus has none
how are you defining available options?

Frankly, The religious aspect of the Renly supporters is not talked about enough. For the most part, the common folk of Westeros will stand up and fight for their current lord, giving Renly control of the common folk and warriors within the Stormlands, and Stannis the support of his own forces. However, we see from the introduction is Stannis that even his own men are uneasy with his faith in the red woman and the Lord of Light, which would only be further amplified outside of his own borders. I am not 100% certain what Renly believes or what he portrays, but I believe he believes in either the Old Gods of the New Gods, making him a far less polarizing character to support as opposed to Stannis.

    • @GeneralGrievousCIS
      @GeneralGrievousCIS 8 месяцев назад

He didn't know it wouldn't save anybody though... neither did Mel for that matter. That's the point. All he had to go on was the multiple times Mel had been right before, and the sacrifices he'd seen work (ie. the leeches).
This sacrifice did technically work also, it should be noted. Mel prayed for R'hllor to clear the storm so the army could safely march onward, and clear the storm promptly did. She had just wrongly assumed that Stannis was Azor Ahai and thus destined to win the battle that followed (not realizing her error until the mass defections). Presumably, actually, the sacrifice did save a fair number of people in the form of the hundreds of soldiers and mercenaries who defected after the storm cleared. Had the storm not cleared, everyone there bar Mel (cold immune and nigh-immortal) was liable to freeze to death or starve... including Shireen.
Also, saving the world is probably the single instance where sacrificing your own child is justifiable. If you are given a choice between saving one kid (yes, even your own), or saving all of humanity from an ice zombie apocalypse, and you pick the former, you're just insanely selfish. Understandably selfish, absolutely, but selfish nonetheless. If there is a history to remember you it would remember you as a villain. It's like Abby Griffin on the 100 (if you've ever seen that show). Half the audience hates her, and it was because she routinely picks "save my daughter" over "greater good of humanity."

I have no issues that Stannis killed Renly, because it was only ever going to end one way, with one of them dead. Renly had no qualms about attacking and destroying his brother with his larger army, and he KNEW Stannis had the right. Stannis had told him to back down several times and even gave him a more than fair offer. Renly didn't take it because he was content with simply destroying Stannis and having that power. His hand was pretty much forced, he had really no other options there.
It made Brienne's "justice" for Renly really cringeworthy to me. Just thinking about how much of a greedy prick that Renly was about the whole thing. He really set up his own demise due to his ego and lust for power. Not to mention after Stannis held out in storm's end and saving Renly's life by extension, Renly just doesn't seem to care it all. And Renly making fun of Shireen's greyscale? He really did come off as a prick. Stannis gave him MANY chances more than most people in westeros probably would have.
The fact Brienne kills him in the series is just such horse shit.

"I would believe it, wow all three kings died after three leeches were tossed in the fire. Three kings? Who would've guessed?"
Me. I would have guessed that kings would die in a succession war. That's what happens in succession wars when many kings fight each other. Mel didn't give a time frame on her prophecy, very soon could've meant throughout years and she just got lucky. It's not actually a crazy claim, she was probably just assuming because she saw something that hinted towards this.
As for the other miracles, how do we know that it's even a god doing this and not just some powerful manipulator in the background? If we had never seen Bloodraven and he told Bran he was actually a tree god, I bet you 99% of the fan base would just believe him cuz he said so to Bran and would think we got a fire god, ice god and tree god or sth.
I think it's all just nonsense tbh. I don't think any of these gods are real whatsoever. GRR Martin is an atheist and hasn't written a story with real deities since HIGH SCHOOL. In every single other story he's got, it's ALWAYS psychic manipulator pretending to be a God and people believe him. Why should Rhllor be any different?

Selyse burning shireen made sense as she is full rhollor mode and doesn't really give much of a shit about her daughter.
Stannis saved shireen from turning into a stone girl and basically told everyone to fuck off also adding that shireen isn't even with stannis she's stuck at castle black with Mel selyse and patch face.
So when the pink letter arrives I reckon they'll sacrifice shireen thinking that stannis is dead when he's not (many people theorise that mance rayder wrote the letter to get support )

As stannis has a vision where he is consumed by fire and the crown also the fact that even though he doesn't want the throne he will fight for it because he's the best for the job.
I don't see him marching back to the wall when the Boltons lose I think the notherners may turn on him after he takes winterfell back (another theory is that he burns a weirwood tree which to notherners is heresy )and even in his crusade to enact justice it will leave him between a rock and a hard place.

Stannis was done wrong in him not showing remorse for his brother's death.
In the book he is clearly hurt for killing his little brother and remembers fond times.
Stannis is a clean lawful Neutral character. Ends justify the means, but it hurts everything he loves.
He was not the Paladin, he's a Warlock, lied to.
"Go on do your duty" is a George line, but Stannis says this knowing he was wrong in the end.

Might I suggested a video on the following topic: The show kind of made the Starks more rustic than they where in the books. House Stark in the novels where not as wealthy as the Lannister's but they where a lot wealthier than the show.
First lets look at what they wear in the books which is nothing like there costumes in the show.
Side note Lord Rickard owned Steel armour and gold spurs.
When Arya is packing to go to Kings Landing she files where chest with silk and Sansa is fond of blue silk.
In Kings Landing Eddard looked nothing like what he did in the show, he always wore what he called his council silk. Ned also commissions a new uniform for his guards. Long cloaks of heavy grey wool decorated with white satin borders. Their cloaks are pinned with hands of beaten silver representing there Lords office as hand of the King. When he was on the Iron Throne Ned wore a white double embosomed with a grey dire wolf.
In Winterfell at the feast welcoming the King and Royal Family they all dressed grandly, including Benjen Stark. There are high born brothers in the Nights Witch from the north and south and I have never seen one dressed as well as Benjen at that feast, not even Lord Commander Mormont himself. He wears rich black velvet high black leather boots. His wide belt has a silver buckle and very heavy silver chain.
When Bran is attacked by Wildlings he is attacked for what he is wearing and he is second legitimate son and he is wearing a wolfs head broch of silver and jet. Jet is a gemstone and this is not a formal event this is just outriding in the woods.
Jon wears fine blacks and mole skin gloves which would not be cheap. At Winterfell harvest feast Bran is dressed quote, as befits a Prince and Robb wears a bronze crown and Catelyn describes her sons royal Kingly attire as quote magnificent.
Also Theon Greyjoy dressed very well when he was living with Stark in silk and Gold and Balon fears the Starks have made him soft. I doubt Greyjoy money was funding Theon's extravagant lifestyle. When he takes Winterfell he crowns himself Prince of Winterfell and orders and orders a new crown forged with black diamonds and chunks of gold. Where did he get the gold and diamonds if not from Winterfell's plundered treasury. And before Winterfell Bran and Luwin gave the Manderley's gold and build a royal fleet and mint coins.
    At the Winterfell harvest feast
Now lets look at Winterfell it is much bigger and much grander than in the show this is a Castle built of granite which is an opulent martial.
Winterfell is a huge castle complex spanning several acres and encircled by two massive granite walls.
Remember the Castle is built over natural hot springs and as the wiki explains.
The water is piped through walls and chambers to heat them, making Winterfell more comfortable than other castles during the harsh northern winters.
    Also from the wiki
Inside the walls, the complex is composed of dozens of courtyards and small open spaces. Weapons training and practice take place in those yards. The inner ward is a second, much older open space in the castle where archery practice takes place. It is located next to the broken tower. Inside Winterfell stands the inner castle, which contains the Great Keep and the Great Hall. Winterfell's towers and halls have diamond-shaped window panes.[6]
    Inner Castle
The Great Keep is the innermost castle and stronghold of the castle complex. It was built over natural hot springs to keep it warm.[5] The Great Keep contains bedchambers for House Stark[5] as well as the solar of Lord Eddard Stark.[7] The building is connected to the armory by a covered bridge.[8] From a window on the covered bridge, one can see the entire yard.[9] Beneath the Great Keep are cellars with narrow windows.[10]
The Great Hall is used for receiving guests and the place where the household dines together, including the Lord of Winterfell. It is made of grey stone[11] and has wide doors made of oak and iron,[12] which opens to the castle yard, and a rear exit leads to a dimly-lit gallery.[12] Inside it can hold eight long rows of trestle tables, four to each side of the central aisle,[12] and the hall can seat five hundred people.[13] There is a raised platform for noble guests, and the walls are covered with banners.[11] The hall contains the high seat of the old Kings in the North. The seat's cold stone has been polished by the many lords who have sat upon it, and its massive arms are decorated with the carved heads of snarling direwolves.[14][15]
The small sept was built for Lady Catelyn Tully, a southron, by her husband, Lord Eddard.[16]
    Courtyard and Other Buildings
The First Keep, a squat and round drum tower, is the oldest surviving part of the castle but is no longer in use. Around it lies a lichyard where the Kings of Winter would bury their loyal servants. The keep has gargoyles atop it.[17][6] Maester Kennet determined it was built after the Andals arrived.[18]
The broken tower, also known as the Burned Tower, was once the tallest watchtower in Winterfell. Over 140 years ago a lightning strike set it afire and the top third collapsed inward, but no one rebuilt it.[19][20] It stands behind the old inner ward. Crows nest atop the broken tower.[19]
The ancient godswood of Winterfell has stood untouched for ten thousand years, with three acres of old packed earth and close-together trees creating a dense canopy, which the castle was built around. At the center of the grove stands an ancient weirwood with a face carved into it, standing over a pool of black water.[16] Across the godswood from the heart tree, beneath the windows of the Guest House, an underground hot spring feeds three small pools, with a moss-covered wall looming above them. The godswood is enclosed by walls, and is accessed by a main iron gate, or smaller wooden ones.
The Glass Gardens[21] is a greenhouse heated by the hot springs, which turn it into a place of moist warmth.[5] It is used to grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers.[9][22] The garden has green and yellow glass panes[10] locked in frames.[8]
The crypt of Winterfell, located near the First Keep, is where members of House Stark are buried. The underground crypts are long and narrow, with pillars moving two by two along its length. Between pillars stand the sepulchers of the Starks of Winterfell, the likenesses of the dead seated on thrones, with iron swords set before them to keep the restless spirits from wandering, and snarling direwolves at their feet. The crypts are deep under the earth, cavernous and bigger than the complex above ground. They are accessed by a twisting stone stair and a huge ironwood door that lies at a slant to the floor. The stair continues below to older levels where the most ancient Kings in the North are entombed.[23][17][10]
The Bell Tower is connected to the rookery by a bridge. The bridge is covered and runs from the fourth floor of the tower to the second floor of the rookery.[6][8]
The maester's turret is below the rookery.[24]
The Library Tower houses the library at Winterfell. A stonework staircase winds about its exterior.[8]
The Guards Hall is in line with the Bell Tower, and further back, the First Keep.[6]
Winterfell has undercrofts and cellars.[25] The castle also has dungeons,[25] including tower cells.[26]
    Walls
Winterfell is a huge castle complex spanning several acres, defended by two massive walls of grey granite with a wide moat between them.[4] The outer wall is eighty feet high, while the inner is one hundred feet high.[4] There are guard turrets on the outer wall and more than thirty watch turrets on the crenelated inner walls.
The great main gates[7] have a gatehouse made of two huge crenelated bulwarks which flank the arched gate[8] and a drawbridge that opens into the market square of the winter town.[27][28]
There is a narrow tunnel inside of the inner wall stretching halfway around the castle, allowing travel from the south gate all the way to the north gate without interruption.[19]
The Hunter's Gate is close to the kennels and the kitchens. It opens directly onto open fields and the wolfswood, so people can come and go without having to cross through the winter town. It is favored by hunting parties.[4]
The East Gate[10] or east gate[29] leads to the kingsroad.[10] The Kingsroad Gate[7] may be another name for the same gate.
The Battlements Gate is a small arched postern in the inner wall. It crosses the moat between the walls but does not have a passageway through the outer wall.[7]#
When Jon Snow becomes Lord Commander of the Nights Watch he considers building a glass building but thinks it will be costly and for such fine glass he would need to look Myr and by the freedom of a few glass makers.
We know Sansa loves lemon cakes and lemon trees do not grow naturally in the north importing lemon seeds to Winterfell from the reach or Doren would not be cheap. My guess would be the seeds came form Doren as one need only sail up the narrow sea than the up the White Knife.
Finally Maester Luwin has his own turret and mentions having servents of his own. The Starks top servants have servants
Not as wealthy as the Lannister but it clear Ned and Robb after him where unlike in the show 2 of the wealthiest man in the world.

    • @GeneralGrievousCIS
      @GeneralGrievousCIS 8 месяцев назад

I mean, why wouldn't he believe it?
Melisandre (especially show Melisandre) has proven her power to him and been correct in her predictions multiple times. Sacrificing the leeches resulted in the death of the pretender Kings. Making a shadow demon with Mel got rid of Renly. He (based on Mel's misunderstanding of the prophecy surrounding the fall of the Boltons) assumed his victory at Winterfell was destined. If Mel says "kingsblood sacrifice will clear the weather and thus save your army for the victory" he's going to believe it, especially since she herself believed it.
Note also that sacrificing Shireen on the show DID do what Mel wanted it to do, technically, in that R'hllor clear the storm and thus made it safe for the army to continue to Winterfell. What Mel didn't anticipate was that Stannis wasn't Azor Ahai and thus wasn't destined to win at Winterfell either way. It only dawned on her when most of Stannis' army defected, at which point she realized and went into panicked flight mode followed by crippling existential depression.
Neither Stannis or Melisandre had any real reason to believe what they were doing wasn't in the service of saving the world. Closest thing we have to a clear indicator (for Mel, there aren't any for Stannis) is book Mel saying she has asked R'hllor to show her Azor Ahai and all she sees "is Snow"... which she ignores (emotional investment in Stannis I assume).

From an analysis of GRRM’s writing, I think Stannis is meant to be the middle ground between Euron ( the twisted Azor Ahai) and Jon/Dany ( the benevolent Azor Ahai figures). He makes tough calls and is loyal, but he is willing to go too far for prophecy. GRRM’s take on prophecy is that it’s a sword without a hilt and you can’t trust it.
