Last January I saw the remaining parts, head, and hoof, of a deer in a puddle of blood and fur on snow eaten by a pack of wolves as I was hiking in the forest... I saw not them of course but their tracks.
Last October in Algonquin park I camped near a game trail and had a moose come so close to the tent I could hear him breathing, he stopped outside my tent for probably 15 seconds but it seemed like and hour, my heart was beating out of my chest!
I appreciate you had the ground rules and other people to be with. I don't like the dark or hiking in the dark either, haha. One spooky experience was when my friends decided to swap our multi-day permit to a day permit to hike Mt. Whitney. Nearing the end I was so exhausted and hallucinating trees as people. It was pretty creepy.
I found my self completely alone in the woods once. Like no one will hear you scream alone. I entered the wood at dusk and didn't get to the other side until well after dark. On top of that I was completely unprepared. I had nothing, no flash light, cell phones were new so I didn't have one, nothing! I kept telling myself that nothing was there, but it sure felt like I was being followed from about 1/3 the way in until the edge of the woods. Talk about head on a swivel.
I was field tech support for an oilfield company. And once i got a call to go help a place and it was close to midnight. The dispatcher told me calmly and serious “if the second gate is closed just ram it open is not locked, do not get out of the pickup and dont look into the trees”. So i found it a bit strange and tought might be a dangerous place for other things rather than a paranormal thing. So as im readying up to go, one of the guys at the location i was going called me as usual to give me any update on issue and he proceeded to say “hey, just a thing, in the second gate just keep looking forward, dont look into the woods, dont get out of the truck just keep forward please”. So now im really interested but the guy (who was a good friend) said dont worry well let you know once you are here just be careful. After i arrived by using the most extreme tunnel vision i could while crossing that second gate, they explained me that you can see shadows move and one of our guys heard a scream and as he got out to investigate something from beneatht hte truck brushed his leg. There are things out there on these old paths so its better to be respectful and just follow your route

I hiked to Monte Cristo during the day in the fog and I found it quite spooky. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the sound of running water from a creek sounds like voices, especially at night!
One time I camp at a mt summit on my vehicle and around 1am a gust of wind woke me up and half asleep I peeked outside and saw something moving towards me, at first I thought it might be a bear or Sasquatch and after a couple seconds I came to my sense and realized it was just a tree swaying in the wind haha 😂 got my heart racing though!
The last time I was in Monte Cristo you could still drive all the way to the town...yeah, probably 40 years ago. We were there to explore the "muddy" Mystery mine. It was very wet, aka muddy, and you had to know where the walkways were, because they were under water. If you stepped wrong, you got very wet...soaked...and some places were fairly deep. And it was very dark. We took white gas lanterns...flashlights weren't that great back then. Awesome trip though. Scary story: Went camping out toward Crystal Mountain with an ex-boyfriend. He really wasn't much of an outdoorsman, but liked to go car camping. We found a great spot along a small creek with a lot of sand and decided to just sleep under the stars. We had a nice little fire, had dinner and went to sleep. Sometime in the late night or early morning, in the pitch black...although there were a million stars visible...the boyfriend woke me up. He had built the fire up pretty hugely. He told me to get up and listen. You could hear something/someone moving around beyond the reach of the firelight. We could hear pretty good sized sticks breaking as if being stepped on by something pretty big. Normally I wouldn't have been scared, but he was. Fear is contagious. After about an hour of listening to the noises, we packed up, put out our fire and lit out for home. We returned the next day to retrieve a few things that had been left behind and discovered our stuff strewn about. There were no discernible footprints, so we never knew what had been out in the dark.
Ok, you nailed that one. Funny, Fascinating, Ferocious...lol. Love Monte Cristo, great history, great artifacts, great hike and yes, you did hear bats they are plentiful up there. That wasn't your first time you there was it? If so, hard to believe. Thank you for the laughs...
This would be so awesome for me, combining to things I love, backpacking and spookies!! What a great idea, I'm wondering if I can find a ghost town in iowa to camp at.
The question is how long does trash have to sit before it is classified as artifact? And if you pick it up are you stealing artifacts or removing trash? Something to discuss around the camp fire.
@@michaelmichael8406 One's for profit, the other for research. I get the question, but they're really very different. Profit: Graverobbing. Research: Archeology. Research with judicial applications: Forensics.
You are one of my favorite Utubers.. I love that you showed you can be a bad ass and be kind of spooked out by Ghost towns.. I would have been hanging on to the closest person to me.. Thank you for the good laugh.
I have also had the experience of thinking running water was actually human voices. It sounds like people are talking but I can't understand them. Could that be why Tennyson called it a "babbling brook"? While traveling and living in a non-English speaking country, I have also had the experience of hearing people speaking in the next aisle in the supermarket and thought they were speaking fluent English in a tone that is not quite audible or understandable. Turn the corner and, lo and behold, they were speaking the local language and it was my ears that were playing tricks on me. Spooky!
Man, you would hate running in to me in the mountains. I do a lot of long day stuff, and frequently come back after dark. I have good low light vision, and when I'm walking in more open areas, I frequently don't use my headlight to save batteries. I feel more insecure in Seattle than I do in the mountains.
If you know the trail then night-hiking can be less stressful, but the added knowledge that animals have better senses than us in the dark usually makes people uneasy. Get a good lighting system and be aware of your environment, then it will be just like any other hike... minus the sunburn
I like night hiking though I stopped because the last time I went I ended up getting growled at, I wasn't able to see what was growling at me which was the scariest part! It was probably a Fischer cat... But I feel like night hiking can lead to more unwanted encounters sometimes.
A friend of mine tried to do a sunrise summit of a local mountain and he ended up getting growled at by what he believes was a mountain lion. Definitely feels riskier!
Good on you for facing your fears Miranda👊. Being totally alone in the wild bush kilometres from civilization at night really does test your intestinal fortitude, especially when you know there are predatory creatures in the area. Love how you carved a pumpkin for your van, haha!
Hahaha.. I missed it until you pointed it out 🎃
The end made my night. Sasquatch, I hope you are doing well.
All these abandoned things in the dark look like torturing devices, especially the bed.
I've been trying to get my family interested in this hike for years - this video did it. Love the kid appeal!

Ok. Miranda visiting the Ghost Town in the morning? She's basically Jack Skellington visiting Christmas Town.

It's similar to the question of archeology vs graverobbing. Fun fact, archeologists don't much seem to like that question.
I think if it’s 50 years or older, it’s an artifact

Quick note. If you do this hike. You can not filter the water there. There is arsenic from mining still in the water. Bring plenty of extra water.
3:39 Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. 🎹

I love the comment that the real horrors of the trail are dirty tissues on the ground. Way too much of that these days. LNT people.
Im a little late to the party but loving the adventures!!!!
great video as always
How long was that leaf stuck to Miranda's shoe? 😂
