I remember going to the Ok state wrestling camp every summer as kid, and when this man entered the room, it went silent. He was immortal to our eyes. Such an amazing career. Thanks for everything you did for Ok state wrestling, but also just in wrestling in general.
What a special man! Not only in wrestling, but on and off the Matt John Smith, embodies what it means to be a true gentlemen. I’m certain that much of that came from his large and close family. Wrestling humble, a person like no other sport and he is absolutely one of the very best to have ever done it. I remember him in Colorado at top of the nation wrestling camp when he was becoming a household name for a wrestling families the world over. I remember seeing him during one of our breaks between wrestling sessions drilling with some of the coaches there and shooting that low over and over and over again. I am sad for the sport wrestling, but I am happy for him and his family. I hope he stays around as an announcer or presence near the mat for as long as he can. God bless you and yours, JS.
There is no other student, athlete, coach, leader, man or woman who embodies what it means to be an Oklahoma State cowboy other than Coach Smith. From his beginning to his legendary end he never let go of his fire and competitiveness. He never let go of his will his character his desire to win and win with his skill. From his individual success to the players he developed into their own success he bore the OSU brand with pride and integrity. That’s what it means to be a Cowboy. Coach, we all say thank you. Thank you for every drop of sweat that hit the mat. For every tear that was shed in agonizing defeat or overwhelming victory. Thank you for not only being a coach, but embodying the title and being THE Coach that changed the culture and carried the desires of everyone you had the opportunity to call a student of YOUR game the game that you gave everything to. From every orange bleeding fan to hopeful child looking to your story as motivation to be one of the greats, thank you and God Bless your family and retirement. We love you coach.

John Smith - one of the most authentic people to have ever walked onto the mat. An Aussie here - and a BJJ coach to boot - but, wow, if you don't know John Smith, you don't know wrasslin. I wish him a wonderful retirement.
The best thing about John as a coach is his no BS press conferences. He told it it like it was. 2nd best thing was his interaction mat side with the Brands boys.
A great Wrestler and Coach enters immortality. The accolades are astonishing. Long live the Legend who mentored coaches and wrestlers. Again congratulations.
This made me cry. Such an amazing man on top of all the life achievements. I was blessed to have my son be one of his 400 athletes and lead his team. May God continue to bless him and his family. Enjoy retirement!
One of the best things is that Coach Smith has left the shelves well stocked w great young talent for the new staff to get in there and take off running. 🤠
He really is the goat #1 on Mount Rushmore. Then it has to go to JB. No one was won 2 Olympic games then 4 world titles. JB won work world titles but John Smith he's number 1.

There is Not a wrestler in Oklahoma that doesn’t look at this guy as a hero.
American treasure!
GOAT!
What happened w coach Chesbrough??? He got fired why?
Because the AD at the time (Myron Roderick) told him that anything less than a National Title was unsatisfactory.
