    Many years ago we would visit wholesale plant grower businesses in hot hot hot Texas and they had these huge greenhouses using this same concept. By far my favorite place; one didn't want to get out of them 🙂

    Some comments are as rude as Troll Dung on an Ogre Path. I appreciate all the great work Chris and all of these guys at Bright Agrotech have been doing. Every since I have started following their work I have been excited to get involved in the process here. I grew up part time with an expert Nationally recognized marksmen. His hand movements as well as many surgeons are similar to the presenter's.

    If you are growing plants such as orchids or carnivorous plants that are highly sensitive to water additives like chlorine etc... will it hurt using tap water in the cooling system or do you have to use R.O. water or well water? Thanks for any info. (I am not informed on info if the chemicals survive the transition from liquid to vapor )

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 года назад +1

      Hey Aaron, This shouldn't be a problem at all, the only reason you would maybe want to use clean or RO water is to prevent buildup on the cooling pads. Hope that tip is helpful.

  • @GseGodsSpeed

    if this was in an aquaponics set up... Couldn't you inoculate the cardboard with gourmet mushrooms and pump the nitrate rich water through it to feed them? Dual purpose wall that would eventually start paying for itself.

    • @bartendersunny1
      @bartendersunny1 6 месяцев назад

      You would need specific strands of mushroom, very constant temps and unwavering humidity at certain levels. Then it wouldn’t work for your og purpose bc mycelium would either eat or clog the channels of the cardboard and the stuff used to treat the cardboard first would likely have things in it you wouldn’t want to eat from the mushrooms.

    • @ZipGrowInc

      Good question. It's because cooling walls use a paper or aspen media, it needs to be watered with a very low TDS otherwise the media gets damaged. Saltwater would be quick to ruin the media quickly and clog distribution lines.

  • @leonitasmaximus4004
    @leonitasmaximus4004 3 года назад

    How long is that cooling wall? I have a 16x32 high tunnel and was planning on making one like this. Seems like the media is about $120 for a 5 pack that is 6"D x 12"W x 36" L. So to do my 32' length of high tunnel it would be about $715 in media. I guess considering swamp coolers run upwards of $1500 - $2000+. I figure after I buy a pump, pvc and fittings I will probably spend another $200 or so. All in all from my estimates would be about $1000 to do a 32' long swamp cooler.

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  3 года назад

      Hello! As a rule of thumb you want to have a square foot of cooling pad for every 200-300 cubic feet of air in your greenhouse. This will need to be adjusted though if you are in a high humidity or high temperature environment!

    • @leonitasmaximus4004
      @leonitasmaximus4004 3 года назад

      @@ZipGrowInc Thanks for the reply. I finally figured that calculation out and after that I was concerned that this would be a good solution for me or not because I am in zone 7b with high humidity summers. Often 90-100 F with 80-100% humidity. So some were saying that the efficiency of a swamp cooler in a high humidity environment is virtually 0%. But I am still learning and trying to find a good solution. I have started to try and find out what other greenhouses do in my area but I have a feeling they are just using huge fans/shutters and are just running better equipment and moving more air but will need to find out.

    • @leonitasmaximus4004
      @leonitasmaximus4004 Год назад +1

      @Cloud 9 I will be honest. I never went this route because of the humidity/temps I typically see in my greenhouse. After calculating the temp/humidity for my zone I found that after a point the returns of cooling diminish. As more humidity is added to the greenhouse and as the Temps increase you get less and less cooling capacity.
      I am working on a geothermal implementation. I decided that using this technique would net more cooling capacity and additionally I am working on developing my own dehumidification system. I am intending on using solid desiccant for the moisture absorption and the only thing I need to figure out is my drying process for the desiccant.
      I think these systems really perform the best in areas that have a lot of dry heat and don't have ambient humidity to deal with. There is also the the evaporative cooling effect where the moisture that lands on the plants will allow some heat to ransfer to the moisture droplets and evaporate into the air.
      Zone 7 can be somewhat tricky in my opinion because of the diversity of weather and temps we see here. Anywhere from way below freezing all the way up to 100+ and 100% humidity.
      I also already use overhead sprinklers and drip tape in my greenhouse. I sometimes use my overheads on the crops that can be top watered in that transition between spring and summer and that works like evap cooling for those crops. I just can't do that in summer with my nightshades and most other summer crops. If I do top water them it will only be during the early morning so that the water can dissipate and evaporate by mid day. Never top water at night as that will encourage rot, mildew, etc. Water will stay in contact for too long with temps being too low making the perfect environment for those to thrive.

    I have a greenhouse i just built in northern CA. it seems as tho it gets really hot running at temps in the high 90's to 112ish even here in October. its only a 10x20x9H hoop house. I've set it up as an inflatable 2 layer and now have a 30-35% white shade cloth on it and dual exhaust fans that each do about 1100CFM but still am getting close to 100's on a 85-90 deg day. i have yet to plant anything because I'm concerned these temps are too high. do you think a cooling wall of some sort can help me get my temps down or should i try other measures?
