I was thinking of making SPACEBAR crouch, and changing jump to MOUSE 2. Either that or just make SHIFT or CAPS LOCK crouch.
I'm very glad when I started playing this game I started using Rocket Jump Ninja's ridiculous binds, they're absurd to get used to but they allow so much freedom
In Quake III or Quake Live I'm using esdf; however, in QC there are less weapons, so I'm using wasd in this game. Also I'm using my mousewheel, but not for cycling weapons - scroll down for RL and up for LG.
I must say that Starcraft (2) is way more stressful than Quake (Champions) in my experience. Both are really fast, but there's just too much to do in SC2 to ever be on top of it.
I had keybind for each weapon ever since i started using that on quake live, first it needed some time to get used to, but after few hours its much better. I also use mouse side buttons and wheel for weapons.
Lio, Rocket Jump Ninja's fan, huh? Plenty of people use mouse 2 for jump, including top players. Reasons: better strafe jump control and probably a bit more precise RJ. Switching fast along the forward axis is not as crucial as strafing left and right. But it's all personal preference. What suits you best, my friend.
Lio I do that, it's great. Jump on a and space. Never heard of that ninja, though. Only time I ever saw a config like mine, it was named "torso boy" on Doom 3's files.
wolfspam lol, I haven't seen a right-click forward mapping in like a decade. If you play overwatch, run Lucio like your playing quake and you'll have a good time.
I like to not have to reach from the directional keys too much so I like to use my thumb in games, usually for buttons C, V, B and sometimes in mmos even N. Here are my keybinds, maybe they work for you! :) 1 Gauntlet 2 Machinegun Q Rocket Launcher E Lightning Gun R Railgun F Shotgun C Nailgun V Tri-bolt T Ability Movement keys are default :)
I would disagree about the mouse wheel - sure the default selection mode is not usable, but just map something like rocket launcher on scroll up and rail or lightning on scroll down instead, plus most mice will have at least 2 side buttons, so that is 4 weapons just on the mouse covered
Scroll wheel up can be a specific weapon, scroll wheel down can be a specific weapon, then the side mouse buttons as well. I have a severely limited left hand due to partial paralysis from a bad car wreck, so I my keyboard hand as little as possible
I do most of my switching on the wheel. Meaning wheel up, rail gun, wheel down rocket, wheel click shotgun. I have a couple more buttons, but freen up those 3 wepons can upgrade the versatility of your wasd surrounding keys.
0:40 you can see that for getting RL quickly you can also press Q,E for LG and R for rail.not sure if you made it that way but i have a feeling its already a default. EDITED AT 3.12.18:as said q,e and r are also binded RL,LG and rail by default.
+Tombstone Jack you shouldn't use it to cycle through them. I'll be honest, I didn't consider the possibility of just specifically binding one weapon to mouse up or down, that seems fine to me. I wouldn't ever do it myself.... But if that is comfortable for you go for it
Actually many pros binding their lg / rail / rockets to +MWHEELUP & DOWN. Main reason behind it, if you want to rationalize it, is that you can use your movement binds completely freely while changing weapons, as the process has absolutely no effect on the keyboard. Not just pros though. Most quakers have some weapon binds on their wheel. I, too, use the up/down wheel for gauntlet/mg for 19 years. : D dem0n, known semi-pro, CYCLING thorough weapons since forever btw. He can only do it properly with an MS WMO 1.1a though. (And this became almost like a meme in the community.) SPART1E also has very interesting (hybrid) weapon switching binds, including cycling AND keypresses.
I've always been a believer in having my keyboard hand (my left hand) stick mostly to movement and only minor weapon switches (like gauntlet, machinegun, nailgun and shotgun) so that when you need to switch to a weapon like rocket-launcher you can do it without sacrificing being able to move in a certain direction etc. I personally use mouse4 for rocket-launcher, mwheel-up for lightning gun and mwheel-down for rail-gun with mouse5 being another bind for my ability (again, to make sure I have a bind which can be used without taking a finger off of a movement key) - at the end of the day though it's all about what any individual is comfortable with I guess, though like you said I would definitely not be trying to stretch over to 6, 7 or 8 for weapons as important as the "big 3"!
I do RL - Q ShotGun- E MachineG- MB 5 / 2 NailGun - R Tri- F Lighting - Wheel Up Rail- Wheel down The scroll button isn’t that long for me on for me on that one when timed right on the reload but if there’s any advice I can get to better up my game that would be appreciated :) I’m new to this game and I’m just trying to figure things out
I've played quite a bit over the years, and play this game. I use wasd movement and mouse 1= fire, mouse 2= zoom, ability = mouse 3, mouse up= MG, mouse down= LG, R=RG, F=SSG, Q=SNG Z=Tribolt, and C=RL Caplock and mouse 5 =Gauntlet, Shift= move down. I've moved things around over the years, here and there, but have always stayed with these basics. wasd and some combination of the key's listed above.
I have a tip for you. Bind MOUSE2 (right click) to forward, so you now you don't need to use the same finger to go back and forth. Then, you bind Rail Gun above your backwards key, since you won't be walking backwards switching to it. Shoutouts to Rocket Jump Ninja.
I use ESDF, and I've been championing its merits for a while now. It gives you the benefits you mention in the video, plus if you're a touch typer, you know exactly where keys are because your hand is in the position it always is when typing. And believe it's really easy to switch. I always use ESDF when I can, but some games don't let me. Switching back to WASD takes all of a few seconds for me to adjust typically. I imagine the same is true for the reverse. Honestly the biggest reason to use ESDF for me is largely ergonomic. My hands are decently big, and WASD makes them feel all scrunched up. ESDF would probably be the default if games were originally developed on contemporary keyboards, but WASD was largely used to prevent keyboard ghosting back in the day.
@Frothy Is there a way to change so that when you run out of ammo with a certain gun it doesn't default to rail if you have ammo for rail. When I'm in close quarters and run out of shotgun, for example, I would prefer it defaults to the nail ammo I have and not rail. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips. The weapon binds were identical to what I used in 96-97. Trying to play quake again, 25 years later, I had forgotten that...Maybe this recall will help, lol.
I wanted to add my personal preference, since in most fps melee is either f or v, I put my gauntlet on v, further reducing the amount of reach I need to do to reach normal weapons,a s they are now from 1 to 4 and I feel very comfortable swapping to it when an enemy comes around a doorway as I shoot them
M2 forward M3 back M4 zoom, SD for strafe, A(MG) Q(NG) W(TB) E(RG) R(LG) F(SS) G(RL) C crouch Z ability. Ive had this since quake 3 excessive plus, where weapon switching is even faster than QC due to the mod's coding. It transfers over well, I never used WASD because the default was mouse 2 for forward and it just made sense at the time and still feels good now.
Whats the difference in between quake champions pack and quake champions pack upgrade? Do i need to have the champions pack to get the champions pack upgrade?
With regards to the mouse wheel, why not just bind it to a specific weapon like wheel up for machine gun and wheel down for rocket launcher. A good idea?
What about scroll wheel down for jump? Since strafe jumping looks like counterstrike bhopping. I've also been thinking about moving the melee weapon to scroll wheel up and moving keys 2-5 to 1-4
I've tried switching my movement from wasd to esdf in other fps games like csgo, but I find it more difficult to use CTRL for crouch so I switched back to wasd
I'd recommend ESDF for anyone using WASD, as it opens up an entire row of keys. I personally prefer using ASDF with RMB: A - Jump / S - Left / D - Backward / F - Right / Z - Crouch / RMB - Move Forward / Space - Aim This way all your fingers are always on your movement keys, so you're not hindering your movement at all. With the F key also having the indent, makes it easy to find.
Hello there, is there any way to make quake run on 144hz, i have very good pc and can run 150-300 fps but i dont feel the smoothnes like in your video, also got 144hz monitor
I've been playing quake for 20 years. These are my keybinds: Mouse mid-button: Gaunlet Mouse 3: Plasma gun Mouse 4: Lightning gun Q: Rocket E: Shotgun R: Railgun 1 and 2: Machinegun 3 and 4: Tridart HINTS: 12-34: To press this row you need to lift most of your fingers from AWSD. So this arrow is the slowest to press. Also your accuracy to press this buttons is worse in comparison with Q-E-R or the mouse buttons, that's why I duplicate the keybinds here. Q-E-R: This is the row where you have better accuracy and reaction time, that's why I put here slow cadency weapons. Mouse buttons: This buttons are very easy to press too, but when you press them, it can affect your ability to track your enemies for a few milliseconds. That's why I put here fast cadency weapons.
Hey, man. Quick question: When would I ever want to use walk? I replaced my shift keybind with something else, so I'm curious if being able to walk is important.
Use whatever you want man, I'm just making recommendations. There's definitely virtue in using things you can reach with your pinky so you don't let go of strafe, I guess. IMO that is overkill but you do you. The big thing is to not scroll through weapons with the mouse wheel, you want every button press to select an item directly.
Better keybinds for new players that are exactly as shown on right side of screen so it helps you having visuals to memorize: 1. Machine gun 2. Shotgun 3. Nailgun 4. Tribolt Q. Rocket Launcher E. Lightning Gun R. Rail Gun V. Melee ( change to whatever you want )
Personally I use Railgun on E, Lightning Gun on R, Shotgun on Q, 3 as Tribolt, and C as chaingun. My bindings all go back to waht I had set on Unreal Tournament, so Most similar weapons go on the same key (Shotgun instead of Flak Cannon, for example.)
Great guide for the new blood! Personal preference here; 5 is too far to press, and 1/2 are just as hard to press with ring or middle finger whilst holding forwards. I use wheel up/down for weapons (mg and shotty) , E is for Energy (plasma/nails) R is for ROCKETS (psh, railgun xD) 3 rhymes with LG, gauntlet on my mouse thumb button (clench that fist yo), tri bolt is C and Rail is X, locating all my keys as close to my index finger as possible, with a few on the mouse. In my UT2k4 days I would use F for Translocator, but that isn't in quake, though i'm thinking of trying out skill button F over Q now. Hope this is taken as a supliment to your guide rather than a criticism...'cept that R for Rail Gun...PSH! :D (i have 1 and 2 for scroll back/forward incase I forgot what i'm carrying, but the weapon bar usually helps more unless it happens in a fight) PS ESDF and RDFG are both legit, but i stopped using them when I kept bumping into games with limited rebind, RMB jump/space zoom for life! (Also see SHIFT for crouch for less stretching with crouch/ rocket jumping, CTRL for walk since you don't need fast inputs and can adjust your hand position)
i think you were a bit biased when you did the mouse wheel one because most people have it set so that you dont pull out the weapon until you stop scrolling
Hey frothy love the quake videos!! here's some more video ideas for beginners 1 a more comprehensive video on rocket jumps. i thought when I first started that you had to do a complete 180 to get an effective rocket jump but that's not always the case depending on where you want your momentum to go. 2 a video on picking up the sounds your enemy makes. In duel this is absolutely crucial for getting those defensive rockets and prefiring rails 3 game mode specific videos like for duel it plays 100% different to sacrifice or dm game modes. No matter what ya do I'm still loving the videos man. I hope your channel keeps going up and up.
This video was insanely helpful I never thought about changing my control scheme to use Q E R but as soon as I did I was able to keep up with everyone else. I can land my shots and movement was never an issue but weapon switching was always a pain in the ass for me, thank you so much
I just started PC gaming and tried 400DPI. It seem to be what most people recommend, including you. My question is how do you use it? When I see your game play it doesn't look so at all. But when I use 400DPI it's dreadfully slow. Am I doing something wrong?
+JasonPlays I don't necessarily recommend 400dpi, I more so recommend a lower sensitivity than default. I play at just shy of 15 inches per 360, meaning I need to move my mouse more than a foot left/right to perform a 360 degree spin. Try setting your dpi and in-game sensitivity to a value that gets you to half or even a third of that. Try a full 5 inches per 360 to start (found by using a ruler or tape measure, or just guesstimate for now)
Higher DPI is smoother and better for desktop, I use 1600 DPI. Did you not figure that you could change sensitivity in the settings? It's alright, you'll figure things out eventually.
If anyone does like the scroll wheel, there's an option to scroll to the weapon you want, before it activates the switch (this might not have been an option when this video was made).
It wasn't, but I still don't recommend doing that anyways. Direct selection of each weapon is critically important. Scrolling to it with the wheel has too much room for error IMO
I use TFGH for movement. WASDs only merit is its age. Why have the whole keyboard in front of you, smashing your mouse into it. UHJK would be even better.
I always use TGFH for every game it’s right in the middle of your keyboard bit of a pain switching from WASD to TGFH but once you get used to it it’s like you can never go back haha
dont ditch the mouse wheel... just assign 1 weapon for wheel up and another weapon to wheel down. what you shouldnt do is set "next slot/weapon" to wheel up or "previous slot/weapon" to wheel dwon. so what you end up is selection of a rail gun whenever you will spin the mouse wheel up... try it.
Why did everyone gravitate to WASD anyway, ESDF or even RDFG makes so much more sense. It really makes me want to consider re-learing and remaping all my games just to have access to so many keys.
I think it became that way simply because it is easier to reach Ctrl, Shift and tab with your pinky that way. Since those are big buttons and you can hit your Ctrl key with a bent pinky, I think many people like to use them for their binds.
Everything works if you want it to and its how you think of it ( resonates with/in you). It can be based on abstract concepts or practical logic. This ( key mapping freedom) to me is why pc is master race.
I have my RG, RL, and Active bound to the mouse wheel. I've been landing a lot of accidental rockets and rails when spamming Keel's grenades. xD ESDF FTW! It's so annoying that no games have ESDF presets, though. When I switched jump to M2, I became a lot better at strafe jumping.
Being left handed I never realised that right handed people have issues reaching 6 to 8 numbers on the keyboard while holding W S A D. Using the keyboard with my right hand I can reach all the way to 0 with my pinky finger without any issue
i have my stuff set like this: -Weapons Rocket Launcher: M-Wheel Up Lightning-Gun: M-Wheel Down Rail Gun: R Nail Gun: E Shotgun: 3 Gauntlet: Q Tribolt: G Machine Gun: 1 Zoom: space ability: mouse 5 -movement Running: WASD (forward, left, back, right) Jump: mouse 2 Walk: shift Crouch: mouse 4 -Misc open chat: enter change champion: H
i dont play QC cuz i like Ql/Q3 better and i use q=rockets, e=rail, r=granade, f plasma, mouswheel forward= lighjtning, mouswheel down=shotty, mousb.4= gaunt, mouseb.5= machien and space =jump yes i use space and it works good for me
I'm no pro but I've been around Quake and FPS since Quake 1 days and it's always been.. Y G H J movement, T - talk, U - plasma, I - grenade, K - railgun, , - machinegun, M - rocket, N - shotgun, V - walk, C - crouch, X - gauntlet, F - lightning, SPACE - jump For Quake Champs I've left F as powerup and T is lightning Give you so much mid keyboard space and you don't feel so cramped up in the corner of the keyboard.
ESDF is great for a few more reasons:
1) the F key has an indent on it, so it's easier to find without looking.
2) it's the natural position for your hands when touch typing.
And the extra keys on the left are handy too, but that probably depends on hand size.

I got the game thanks to this free week deal and i got the Q-rocket launcher, E-lightning gun and R-plasma rifle by default

whats the plasma rifle? is that the nail gun or the railgun?

I thought q,e,r was the default bind ever since the closed beta tho...or more like ever since q3 I think

For TF2 (default, different for some classes like Spy) and CSGO, Wheel Up Slot 1, Wheel Down Slot 2, Middle Click Slot 3.

z - lightning gun, so I personally don't like this gun too much, but I made it comfortable to pull out bc apperently it's good, and I can't deny the delight of quad dmg lightning.
g - tri bolt, usually dedicated to my nade launcher in quake, this button is my "might need or want, but would replace with a better option if able" button.
r - rail gun, no reload you say? well then this RRailgun i wanna use at RRange, with a slow RRecovery cooldown gets that button.
and then f for special, shift for walk (think I might unbind walk tbh) and p FoR juMP, jk spacebar obvs, and the wasd movement quake helped invent ofc.
This for me makes every button accessible, without making me fuck up my hand position, strain my wrists, or look down at the keys, all of which would screw me over
Mapping every action in Quake is such a piece of cake after hl2dm
It was, even before hl2dm. : >
I just gotta say, I watched so many tutorials of yours before I started quake and this made it way easier for me to start.

RMB for Jump is awesome. Space for Zoom is perfect.
Coming from Starcraft, hitting the key binds is a walk in the park!
TheITS Starcraft is a pretty relaxed game (i think) so trying to hit the right keys in a stressful game like Quake is harder
I must say that Starcraft (2) is way more stressful than Quake (Champions) in my experience. Both are really fast, but there's just too much to do in SC2 to ever be on top of it.
"Starcraft is a pretty relaxed game" first time I've ever heard someone utter such words.
Guys calm down I said "i think"
@@MelonMafia1 lol
thank you man I would be lost in this game without your guides
I had keybind for each weapon ever since i started using that on quake live, first it needed some time to get used to, but after few hours its much better. I also use mouse side buttons and wheel for weapons.
MOUSE 2 FOR JUMP IS KING! HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!
Why not MOUSE2 for forward? You don't have to use the same finger to go back and forth.
@@iLiokardo Thats what I do!! Everyone thinks I'm weird which is also true
you helped me with titanfall 2, now you are helping with quake! your vids/style is spot on. thanks for the content, hopefully titanfall 3 soon!
I like to not have to reach from the directional keys too much so I like to use my thumb in games, usually for buttons C, V, B and sometimes in mmos even N. Here are my keybinds, maybe they work for you! :)
1 Gauntlet
2 Machinegun
Q Rocket Launcher
E Lightning Gun
R Railgun
F Shotgun
C Nailgun
V Tri-bolt
T Ability
Movement keys are default :)
Q,E,R,F,G,C,V are all my keybinds for the weapons in order
M4 for ability and M5 for VC
Thumb buttons for LG/RG work pretty nicely for me, makes it really satisfying to combo with the RG.
EDITED AT 3.12.18:as said q,e and r are also binded RL,LG and rail by default.
wait I got confused so I shouldn't have any weapons bound to my mouse wheel or I shouldn't use it to cycle through them?
+Tombstone Jack you shouldn't use it to cycle through them. I'll be honest, I didn't consider the possibility of just specifically binding one weapon to mouse up or down, that seems fine to me. I wouldn't ever do it myself.... But if that is comfortable for you go for it
thanks and ya I use my mouse up/down for 1 weapon each lets me have 4 guns bound to my mouse
dem0n, known semi-pro, CYCLING thorough weapons since forever btw.
I do
RL - Q
ShotGun- E
MachineG- MB 5 / 2
NailGun - R
Tri- F
Lighting - Wheel Up
Rail- Wheel down
The scroll button isn’t that long for me on for me on that one when timed right on the reload but if there’s any advice I can get to better up my game that would be appreciated :) I’m new to this game and I’m just trying to figure things out
I've played quite a bit over the years, and play this game.
Thanks!
Can't change that unfortunately... I would also love that setting
Thanks for the tips. The weapon binds were identical to what I used in 96-97. Trying to play quake again, 25 years later, I had forgotten that...Maybe this recall will help, lol.
I wanted to add my personal preference, since in most fps melee is either f or v, I put my gauntlet on v, further reducing the amount of reach I need to do to reach normal weapons,a s they are now from 1 to 4 and I feel very comfortable swapping to it when an enemy comes around a doorway as I shoot them
How customizable are controls in QC? Can I create custom aliases for 2+ actions like in Q2?
Mouse thumb for gauntlet is good when you're needing to get guts deep. Still have access to all your nav buttons so you can keep chasing them down.
That's totally fine!
What about asd with right click as your forward. Old skool binds.
What about scroll wheel down for jump? Since strafe jumping looks like counterstrike bhopping.
I've also been thinking about moving the melee weapon to scroll wheel up and moving keys 2-5 to 1-4
I would maybe put jump on right mouse, but not on scroll wheel. The other changes you're mentioning all seem fine though!
You auto jump in Quake Champions, by just holding down the jump key.
What about binding scroll up/down for gauntlet/shotgun? Helps keep your fingers on WSAD for those close-quarters fights.
As. Long as you're picking a weapon directly, sure!
I've tried switching my movement from wasd to esdf in other fps games like csgo, but I find it more difficult to use CTRL for crouch so I switched back to wasd
I use mouse wheel up for the gauntlet and down for mg, plus have a couple of additional buttons on a mouse for sg and nails.
I'd recommend ESDF for anyone using WASD, as it opens up an entire row of keys.
I personally prefer using ASDF with RMB:
A - Jump / S - Left / D - Backward / F - Right / Z - Crouch / RMB - Move Forward / Space - Aim
This way all your fingers are always on your movement keys, so you're not hindering your movement at all. With the F key also having the indent, makes it easy to find.
Ah I wish it was still possible to get the Twitch Rocketlauncher ; _ ;
i do have it along with quakecon 2017 lg and not using either
Hello there, is there any way to make quake run on 144hz, i have very good pc and can run 150-300 fps but i dont feel the smoothnes like in your video, also got 144hz monitor
I've been playing quake for 20 years. These are my keybinds:
Mouse mid-button: Gaunlet
Mouse 3: Plasma gun
Mouse 4: Lightning gun
Q: Rocket
E: Shotgun
R: Railgun
1 and 2: Machinegun
3 and 4: Tridart
HINTS:
12-34: To press this row you need to lift most of your fingers from AWSD.
Adrian Lopez thx man
ya'll are forgetting about Z X C and V. those keys are below WASD so according to gravity you should be faster.
Really though.
Hey, man. Quick question: When would I ever want to use walk? I replaced my shift keybind with something else, so I'm curious if being able to walk is important.
Mostly duel and 2v2. It has the added benefit of muting ambient sound, so you can hear your opponent better!
So you recommend using numbers over shift tab space and mouse buttons?
Use whatever you want man, I'm just making recommendations. There's definitely virtue in using things you can reach with your pinky so you don't let go of strafe, I guess. IMO that is overkill but you do you. The big thing is to not scroll through weapons with the mouse wheel, you want every button press to select an item directly.
Better keybinds for new players that are exactly as shown on right side of screen so it helps you having visuals to memorize:
1. Machine gun
2. Shotgun
3. Nailgun
4. Tribolt
Q. Rocket Launcher
E. Lightning Gun
R. Rail Gun
Whatever works for you! You've got dedicated buttons for everything, which is the core of my argument here.
Does this game have a "last weapon used" button? cuz, I can HL2 that shit
that or bind railgun to mouse4 and rocket launcher to mouse5
+RightClickGamers I don't believe so, no. Not at home to verify for you at the moment. I'll reply again if I find that bind for you
so how i can switch fast to weapon that i need like in q3 arena? I've been shocking when i see that CD between switching to knife. So long cd...insane
:D (i have 1 and 2 for scroll back/forward incase I forgot what i'm carrying, but the weapon bar usually helps more unless it happens in a fight)
PS
ESDF and RDFG are both legit, but i stopped using them when I kept bumping into games with limited rebind, RMB jump/space zoom for life!
Hey man, I know it's personal preference, but what's your mouse sensitivity setting if I may ask?
1200dpi, 0.916667 sens in game
Hellow! Please, what is the problem of using an mmo mice in fps game? what's the difference besides the number of buttons?
Constantly changing the shape and flexion of your hand will negatively impact your aim.
ok i see. Thank you.
+AdrenalineJunkieXL these are all in the pipeline!
FrothyOmen hell yea man I have no doubt they'll be good lol
Does any right-handed player use the numpad for movement and weapons? I've been wanting to try it.
This video was insanely helpful I never thought about changing my control scheme to use Q E R but as soon as I did I was able to keep up with everyone else. I can land my shots and movement was never an issue but weapon switching was always a pain in the ass for me, thank you so much
This is my set:
q- machine gun,
e-shotgun,
r-tribolt,
f-lightning gun,
x- nail,
c-rail,
alt-rocket
middle mouse-ability,
space- zoom,
mouse extra keys (left thumb)- gauntlet,
right mouse button-jump.
hi, how do you set up an server to pratice alone? can anyone help? nice video, thanks a lot :)
I set my ability key to one of the side buttons on my mouse... Works great for me. Might try putting jump on rmb
I have the shotgun bound to my overwatch melee button which is my 1/2 spare mouse buttons used by my thumb.
*Laughs in 5 button mouse*
Btw, what I really love about Quake Arena games is how bizarre and unique keybinds for each player are.
Am playing at 59-65 fps good enough?
Me personally I use space for shoot right mouse button for jump and left mouse button for ADS I recommend giving it a try
I use mwheeldown for jump and pretty much leave everything the same, but i used to use esdf for quake so idk ill prob do that again eventually
I put the melee on middle mouse, and then remapped the first 4 guns to 1-4, and have the rest on q e r
I always use TGFH for every game it’s right in the middle of your keyboard bit of a pain switching from WASD to TGFH but once you get used to it it’s like you can never go back haha
O use nailgin at my mouse button and so I can use the tribolt at number 4, like in Quake 3 where gl was used in 4
dont ditch the mouse wheel... just assign 1 weapon for wheel up and another weapon to wheel down. what you shouldnt do is set "next slot/weapon" to wheel up or "previous slot/weapon" to wheel dwon.
so what you end up is selection of a rail gun whenever you will spin the mouse wheel up... try it.
That's an option I did not think to explore and is certainly an alternative to what's presented in the video
Why did everyone gravitate to WASD anyway, ESDF or even RDFG makes so much more sense. It really makes me want to consider re-learing and remaping all my games just to have access to so many keys.
Honestly man, you're totally right. It does seem just flat out better looking at it on paper.
I once tried esdf, it was too hard to use shift and ctrl.
WASD became the standard because of a world champion Quake player named Thresh.
Ph42oN yes...i faced the same reaction....its a bit hard to reach over to those buttons
I think it became that way simply because it is easier to reach Ctrl, Shift and tab with your pinky that way. Since those are big buttons and you can hit your Ctrl key with a bent pinky, I think many people like to use them for their binds.
I actually do the RMB jump because of my absolutely weird hand position on WASD, which would make right diagonal strafe jumps impossible :D
Is your keyboard in a 45 degree angle?
Nope :D, I use my thumb to strafe right, index finger to move forwards /backwards and my middle finger to strafe left.
I like to bind 2 on the side buttons on my mouse and 2 on the scrollwheel
I disagree. Mouse wheel is awesome. I use MW up for the railgun and MW down for the rocket launcher :3
Choosing a weapon directly with the wheel is fine. It's scrolling through that's terrible. Could've worded that better.
I get it :D You worded it just fine, I'm just fooling around. Good stuff.
MOUSE2 for forward, RG above backwards key.
It's a good thing I switched to PC gaming on June 2017, so I can follow/play the cool fast paced games Frothy plays. :P
Good Key Binds Frothy!
+Matoro Zeliph enjoy the pc man!!
I don't use the walk function so I map the shotgun to shift for a quick switch to finish an enemy, and the tribolt to 3 because I actually use it.
Whatever works for you! If you don't play duel or 2v2, I can definitely see you not feeling like you need walk.
shift everything over so e becomes your forward key, gives you more available keys to bind to weapons.
ESDF is cool yeah
You should change to Esdf move so you can use a, q, and W on the left side. I only use 2 and 3 for my Gauntlet.
switched jumping and zooming and i feel more comfortable with that
Everything works if you want it to and its how you think of it ( resonates with/in you). It can be based on abstract concepts or practical logic.
This ( key mapping freedom)
to me is why pc is master race.
I would never use ESDF. Its getting too far away from my RageQuit Button - (Esc).
What FOV do you use?
I have my RG, RL, and Active bound to the mouse wheel. I've been landing a lot of accidental rockets and rails when spamming Keel's grenades. xD
ESDF FTW! It's so annoying that no games have ESDF presets, though.
When I switched jump to M2, I became a lot better at strafe jumping.
Being left handed I never realised that right handed people have issues reaching 6 to 8 numbers on the keyboard while holding W S A D.
Using the keyboard with my right hand I can reach all the way to 0 with my pinky finger without any issue
rocket: F Rail: E LG : R Nails: Q Shotgun: 3 Tribolt : Shift Gauntlet: C This works best for me
i have my stuff set like this:
-Weapons
Rocket Launcher: M-Wheel Up
Lightning-Gun: M-Wheel Down
Rail Gun: R
Nail Gun: E
Shotgun: 3
Gauntlet: Q
Tribolt: G
Machine Gun: 1
Zoom: space
ability: mouse 5
-movement
Running: WASD (forward, left, back, right)
Jump: mouse 2
Walk: shift
Crouch: mouse 4
-Misc
open chat: enter
change champion: H
Why not bind some weapons to Z, X and C?
i dont play QC cuz i like Ql/Q3 better and i use q=rockets, e=rail, r=granade, f plasma, mouswheel forward= lighjtning, mouswheel down=shotty, mousb.4= gaunt, mouseb.5= machien and space =jump yes i use space and it works good for me
I'm no pro but I've been around Quake and FPS since Quake 1 days and it's always been..
Y G H J movement, T - talk, U - plasma, I - grenade, K - railgun, , - machinegun, M - rocket, N - shotgun, V - walk, C - crouch, X - gauntlet, F - lightning, SPACE - jump
For Quake Champs I've left F as powerup and T is lightning
Give you so much mid keyboard space and you don't feel so cramped up in the corner of the keyboard.
