The juxtaposition between the macabre lyrics and incongruously buoyant instrumentation blows my very tiny mind. I first heard the entire album - Welcome to the Beautiful South - on the way home to Pietermaritzburg from an Elton John concert in Johannesburg in 1993, and it made everything Elton had done seem rather mediocre. I'll be thinking about that night all day now and I'm already miserably happy.
You should look up TBS' cover of The Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" on RUclips, for another great example of TBS' trademark jaunty music under dark lyrics. It's a masterpiece.
First time i heatd this song sng live. Leicester de montfort hall. Paul, dave and Brianna. I was with my best mate my first ever beautiful south gig and my most favourite. Brianna no longer with the south no dave and my mates no longer with us ( rest in peace russ ) I'll never forget it . 1 of the best nights I've ever add x
Brianna had a beautiful voice to go with Pauls. I thought it could never be bettered, then along came Jacqui. We have been spoilt with the music and lyrics produced by the BS over the years.
Does it have a deeper meaning? There is the song and cult film "Wonderwall," Bowie's girl with the mousy hair who is "stuck to the silver screen and a woman that he meets by a wall in Heroes.
@@Hallands. Thanks. I think it should be. When Eve was made out of a side of us, I think that she was made out of a wall of us and there is a woman in all our walls.
timtak1 Well, I see no point in arguing religion one way or the other. I essentially have only this to say about religions: Don't let mere *_thoughts of God_* or any religious authorities come between you and God. Such may tend to create the illusion that God can be understood by the mind and thus leads nowhere, because The Timeless Creator self evidently cannot be subjected to creations.
@@Hallands. Hear, hear. I like to think about the lyrics of Oasis, Bowie, and The Beautiful South as well as various religions, but, yes I can see how they might get in the way. I think koan 42 in the Gateless Gate may also be about the same wall woman but there she is described as a mask, which is just another metaphor.
timtak1 Yes, I get you and I also like to delve deeper into many subjects and have patterns emerge. It's just that I discovered that all activities are facilitated to a surprising degree by not identifying with mind. We have it, but it's not what we essentially are...
It's such a creepy yet melodic song! I hate that I love it. And I'm trying to figure out the meaning. Sure, the simple version is he kills a woman and stuffs her in his wall but, what does the part *_she'd knitted him a jumper with dominoes on so he wore it every day in every week_* mean? (even odder, they have a great song called Domino Man).
And not a phone in sight!! This was probably one of the best shows I have ever been to.
Most underrated song writer ever and voice of a working class man
Never be another..The genius Heaton...
Such a powerful song ... brilliantly written... Brilliantly sung
that is one of the most important songs by the beautiful south 💖💗💓- its 2023 - and still -this topic is here....
I love how they make the most cruesome morbid lyrics sound so upbeat

timtak1 Immurement is a very old theme. Search "immurement wiki" and have a look.

Someone needs to make a 8D audio of this song
🎶🎶🎶❤🇮🇪✊🏼💋
One of the many great BS songs written by a man who, for some reason I'll never know, doesn't have a stack of Ivor Novellos
What the shit is this?? 🤔🧐
Read up on it.
